Great showdown! I have only used the astra blade. And today I've been thinking on buying some perma-sharps. I'd like to try them and see how they work on my skin.
Great review. Astra Greens are my go-to blade. When new to DE shaving I found Astra too sharp and bitey and preferred Derby Extra. But now it's all about the Astra. Super sharp, smooth and zero tug on my tough stubble. On my Muhle R41 I find it the perfect shave. Derby Premium Swedish steel are almost as sharp, zero tug but smoooooth. Astra are so damn cheap to buy, it's easy to forget their low price.
Have you bought Astra blades recently? I wonder if they have changed since you did this comparison? I bought some Astra SP Green dated 2022 and they are nowhere near as sharp as Perma-Sharps.
I too have tried both blades & found the Astra smoother, while the Perma sharp was a bit aggressive. In terms of longevity, I can get a comfortable head & face shave with the Astra while the Perma sharp was tugging towards the end.
Hi Gary great shave. I used an Astra SP this evening. Started the first pass with the Voskhod (second shave) but it felt uncomfortable. Regarding the difference between the Astra SP and the Perms Sharp I would put them on par with eachother YMMV. They both perform well in the Leaf Shaver too. I can buy half Perma Sharp blades but not Astra SP halves so I think Perma Sharp will be my go to blade for the Leaf.
It's so funny how much blade preference varies between people. I would like nothing more than to get good shaves from Astra blades but it just hasn't happened yet. I'll keep trying every so often. I have a few Perma Sharp samples that I haven't tried but they seem to be pretty popular, at least between the RU-vidrs I watch. Thanks again for an informative and entertaining video.
As the saying goes "ymmv"🙂 I guess it depends on beard thickness/growth and the razor used. The Astra's aren't the sharpest blades out there but for me they are smooth and reliable. I haven't used an Astra in a while now but will probably revisit them on Saturday. Do you have a favourite blade or at least a blade you would always turn to when trying a new razor? Cheers Eric👍
@Mr G Shave I do. I have tried several dozen blades and, so far at least, King C. Gillette blades are the right balance of sharp and smooth for my face. I've had my best DE shaves with Russian Gillette blades in general like Silver Blue and Nacet. I also have good luck with Lord and Personna as well. The fun part is that they feel different in different razors and also as I improve I find that blades I didn't like are now fine. I can assure you that this experimentation is a big part of what has drawn me into shaving as a hobby.
Hi Gary, This has reminded me that I haven't used an Astra green for ages. I shall use one again soon. I have to say I like Perma sharp and most Gillette blades to be honest. My favourite blades are either Nacets, Vikings Sword or "A Best" from Switzerland 🇨🇭. Take care mate and stay safe, Dave.
I haven't tried Vikings Sword or A Best blades. In fact I have never heard of them. Where did you get them from? I will give them a try. The Astra Green blades have always been my go to blades since I first started DE shaving many years ago now👍
Occasionally they do mate. I forget which blade it was but it didn't want to fit onto the posts so I really pushed it on. I needed a pair of long nose pliers to get it off lol 😆
I have always rated Astra blades right from the start. I was quite surprised by the Perma-Sharps though👍 I am a bit sore now after having done two videos today. That always kicks me about a bit.
Astra green blades just cant be beat! For the price and quality. There blue blades are awesome as well if you prefer a little longer lasting blade over a little more comfort in the green. At least thats how i describe the diff. Anyone who says feathers are better but drank the kool aid and dont want to admit there $60 for 100 blades is no better than the $8 for 100 Astra blades. Heck at most the Astras are $15 for 100 if your just adding them to a order your already getting or something.
There are those that would agree. I love my Astra Green blades, they are certainly in my top 10 blades. The Feather & Kai blades are slightly thicker and wider than all other blades available today. This makes them feel sharper / more aggressive. I find I use Feather/Kai blades in milder razors, however Astra blades can be used across the board, pretty much in any razor🙂

Lol, I don't have any Imperial to compare it to but the scent is definitely a dupe of something I have smelled before. I just can't put my finger on it.
