Thanks so much Nick for allowing us to be part of your shave today/tonight. We always appreciate the kind words of support and encouragement for our products.
hey, just want to wish you well in orthopedics. I am a surgical technician, over the past 43 years, and retired army combat medic with a tour in Baghdad, class of 2004. you're putting in a lot of work, but it'll pay off in the future. good luck and thanks for the videos.
Nick it was awesome to hang out two weeks ago. Thanks for recommending the my channel. I look forward to the next time we can meet and have some beers.
As someone who hasn't used a safety razor and would like to, i would be interested in a video about just the very basics of safety razor shaving and what kind of gear would be the best for a beginner, keep up the great videos !
Thanks for the new video, Nick. Great info and reasoning behind drying out the soap puck. First time I've heard that not drying it out will degrade the soap. Thank you!
I do the same with my soaps after I finish lathering. i find that the soaps last longer. Also, I completely agree that meeting people in person is indeed a great way to spread the word and also get good tips from other shavers! Good mentions! Great video!
You can't go wrong with Soap Commander. It's interesting you mentioned your Ortho surgical rotation. Monday evening I fractured my 5th Metatarsal. It's around 2mm displaced with a small fragment. It's pretty far back and the doctor considered surgery, but since it's only 2mm she decided against it. Now I'm just going through the adjustment of crutches etc. Keep up the great shaves and more importantly your doctor's work.
Great shave Nick...I might have to get me some Soap Commander looking at that lather you have there. Totally agree with you on the Perma Sharps. Those and Gillette Silver Blues are my two 'go-to' blades at the mo'.
Hey Nick - great video as usual. Pretty much brand new to DE shaving; on third week now. Still retraining myself to new system. But, just want to say thank you for your passion and insights into shaving. It has made my transition from those cheap plastic things a pleasure. I know you're busy but keep the shave reviews/tutorials/commentary coming. Ty
I'm happy to hear you compare the scents of SC Passion and CB LPV. I noticed it a couple of years ago so when I shave with LPV I always use SC Passion balm. Try it sometime, I think you'll enjoy it.
*Real talk though, those Permasharp Supers are the TRUTH. They will get you baby-faced like you would not believe. Wonder if they're going to get Nicks (Blade Of The Year) award.* *o________0*
Perma-Sharp is perfect for those that have tough beards and yet also has sensitive skin and can't make too many passes without irritation. Soap Commander is my top choice in shave soaps. it seems to work best with both my water and my skin type which is probably why i have 10 of their soaps in my shave cave.
After watching this video, I ordered and I used these blades for the first time this past week and I too find them to be very smooth/sharp blades. I currently have a beard, so I just shave my neck and these have left me with a nice, smooth shave! Thank you for doing a video on these! Hoping you'll do a video on some Merkur blades!!! when you shave your neck, how do you get such a smooth shave with only going with the grain? I tried that once and I still had so much left over. I normally go with, against, and sometimes across the grain.
I just got my semogue 830 brush as per your recommendations. waiting for my rose scented shaving cream (taylor of old bond street) should be here on the morrow.
Hey, Nick, are you planning on trying any Chiseled Face products? I would love to see you do lather and shave reviews on their "Summer Storm" and "Trade Winds" scents, specifically.
Great video as always Nick! Any chance of doing a review of the Van Der Hagen luxury scented soap? I know you did a review of the deluxe awhile back, but I think the luxury is a significant upgrade and you cannot beat the price point and availability. I get excellent shaves with it👍
Thx for sharing. Wish you all the best. Ever since I saw your permasharp review I thought to get them will try them out by getting a single pack of a couple of brands. It's way way more expensive that way bit seems the safest way to go
it would be cool if you did a video on straights vs shavettes like how they feel and shave differently and also which blades are best for a shavette in future videos maybe
Nick you should try and review the Rockwell blades, they are pretty good. Also they have Rockwell 6s razor designed that's adjustable, stainless steel and affordable.
Do you ever use mikes natural anymore? I remember watching a video a while ago about your top soaps, and mikes natural was on the list. Watching that video made me go check it out and now its my go to, and has been for about 4 months. I love that stuff. Orange, cedarwood and black pepper is an amazing scent.
I want to see a re-review of Polsilver Super Iridium blades. These are my top blades, and to me they feel similar although smoother in my opinion than the Perma-Sharps.
Hey Nick. I've yet to try Passion but LPV reminds me (to my nose at least) of the scent called 'Spicebomb' by Viktor & Rolf. Have a sniff when you get a chance and see if you agree. Cheers!
Good to see a vid nick. Have you ever tried a pre shave oil in squirt bottle? Makes any soap great. The Royal shave with the permas. I love them. I can atg with them slowly and find bbs. Hope you get through residency ok. It'll get easier soon. Post the link to the guy with the channel? Couldn't find him. Thanks bud
nick another great video, another wet shaver i follow "shavebusta" is going to be at the first shave con this month in san diego, would you ever consider making an appearance at one of these shave cons?
interesting about the cross grain and not against nick . I too find if i follow the set in concrete method for a 3 pass shave i get terrible irritation. The mad scientist of shaving hit on this in one of his videos , i too find a 2 pass with the way it feels comfortable on your skin face is more important than , to follow some set pattern . A methodical shave nick . - thanks .
Hi Nick you & Busta favourite razor is the Merkur 34C. I was wondering if you have tried the 38C as I have been told its the same as the 34C but with a longer handle. Great video by the way, I use the Perma in my rotation, great blades.
hey nick! I'm a huge fan of your videos and insigh ; it really helped me when I began wet shaving not long ago. Also, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on my shaving soap (I'm an hobbyist soapmaker with sensitive skin) if I sent you a puck. Not a video or anything, but just to try it and tell me what you think about it. It would be so amazing if you'd say yes. Anyway, nice job on your videos ! I hope you'll have enough time with your job to upload/make more videos! :)
Hey Nick! Could you do a video review of the new Gillette DE blades that have been showing up in Walgreens and Hy Vee stores lately. They are made in Brazil and come in a black and grey package with either 3 or 9 blades in it for $3.00-$6.00. Imo they make the labs feel dull almost!
great shave nick! it would be awesome if you reviewed the gillettes 365, which are the only ones i am seriously curious about, and other soaps, like the italian barber ones (amici, millonario and so on), or comparing razor heada, like the razorock mentor and the protege) in some cases it gets hard to make an educated decision on shaving gear when you are tight on budget!
enjoy your show, you might even be using some the things I make, I machine repair parts for powered orthopedic tools. among other surgical stuff we make. lots of styker stuff.
+nick shaves How do you feel about the quantity of soap in a tub? It appears that the market is saturated with soaps. Some tubs could last for over a year. It would appear that soap makers could get away with making smaller tubs. Just a thought.
U should try to do a review on van der hagen blades and van der hagen luxury shaving soap which is different than their deluxe soap just to let you know.
You would love Haslinger. The sheep milf lanolin one is the best, a lot argue it's the best soap ever made by any artisans and other soap makers a like.
Your reviews have helped me a lot! Have you tried the SUPER CLOSE SHAVE FORMULA from Baxter of California? I'd like to hear your experience on that product. I really like their alcohol-free after shave balm.
I'm curious, you mention not being able to go ATG. I have similar issues as you, if I do ATG with a DE, I tend to get some irritation and ingrowns, but I have recently switched to a straight razor and I can go ATG without issue. I know you've used a straight before, but I'm curious if you were able to go ATG with it when you were straight shaving? Also, I find single edge blades like GEMs and Feather/Kai Artist Club blades are much thicker and sturdier vs DE and provide the ability to go ATG. Something to consider if you would like to go ATG and have been unable to at this point (assuming you haven't tried it yet). Great video, as always.
@nickshaves I too, have [re]discovered the Nivea aftershave balm. I have used many more costly aftershave balms and I think Nivea works as well if not better. Two questions: I have a sensitivity to the nickel in the GSB blades as well as other uncoated stainless steel blades. Do you think the Perma Sharps are protected enough for me to use? (Second question) Would you do a video that includes recommendations of other products you use, e.g. shampoo/conditioner, bath soap/wash, deodorant, and whatever else you think might be useful? I like to see if there are products I should try that work for other people. Thank you for all your insights.
Hi Nick. Great shave as usual. Might have to give those perma sharps a run for the money. Speaking of slickness, sometimes I wonder if a soap can be a little to slick. Like gliding over the top of my beard rather than getting right down to the skin. Palmolive cream doesn`t seem quite so slick to me but I always get a very good shave with it. May be just my imagination. Also could you name the shave strop you have. Been trying to decide on which one to buy. Take care and don`t work to hard.
Any strop will do Just have to remember that you get what you pay for when it comes to leather. I personally use Straight Razor Designs kangaroo leather strop Hope I helped a little and good luck w your choice
Hey Nick, I'm on a tight budget. Would it be better for me to purchase an aggressive razor such as the Muhle R41 and match it with a mild but cheap blade, say Derby Extra as opposed to say an R89 or Merkur 34C with a sharp-ish and more expensive blade like a Feather or Personna?
Why cucumber? I've never had access to that version. How does it differ, functionally, from the regular, unscented Thayers? Or is it just for the scent?
Hey Nick, I bought an Edwin Jagger DE89LBl and I am going to start soon. As a beginner should I do the three passes - with the grain, across the grain, and against the grain that you do? I have gotten in-grown hairs with electric shavers and every cartridge razor I have tried. Would it be best if I just stuck with shaving with the grain but doing two passes?
+James Kearns Hi James. I'm fairly new myself but thought I'd lend a bit of advice for a fellow noob. personally I wouldn't recommend against the grain when new unless you're using blunt blades like derby. you will end up in a blood bath if using sharp blades like feathers. I can't emphasise how different the technique is from electric/cartridge. I'd very much recommend learning your technique with the grain first with forgiving blades. then when more confident have a go against. I hope this helps.p.s. nick doesn't go against the grain, he goes with the grain and then cross grain in different directions.
Hey Nick, I'm thinking of picking up my first boar brush! I'm between the Semogue 1305/830, 820, and 610! Any insight into differences between the 830 and 820, or all 3?
+Danny Cetino Balms don't tend to have alcohol and are more of a cream/gel. Aftershaves are tonics usually. You can use them both and it is more common to use the alcohol aftershave first and then the balm, because the aftershave will dry the balm out (thus, defeating its purpose). However, if the balm has a smell to it, then it might override some of the aftershave smell you are using.
Wait till you have kids :) Any plans to do a review of the new Rockwell 6S razor? Been getting some great reviews on forums and potentially great value at $100 USD
im looking for some advice, my friend shaves and his skin looks darker iv seen this on a few other people it looks fucking green or burnt how do i avoid this?
Nick - fyi re: Perma-Sharp Super Blades. They are about $28 (after shipping) on the link you posted for Amazon - which is really expensive - 28 cents per blade. I found 100 pack on Ebay with free shipping for $12.15! I thought you might want to know that since you likely will buy more, and your listeners may want to buy them. I hope this is okay I am sharing this. If you are getting some contribution for your channel by posting Amazon please feel free to erase my post. I am not looking to complicate anything, as I love you channel.Chris R.
+chris ryan There are Perma-Sharp blades made in Russia and Turkey. Russian PS are cardboard box and Turkey made ones are white plastic. There is a difference between them so make sure you are getting the right ones. Russian PS are said to be better.
+Phillip Hoang The ones I got came from Turkey but were in the same box as the ones Nick uses in this video. The packaging looks the same as the link he noted from Amazon. I am a little confused now, but I think I got the same ones Nick used. However, I did not find them near as sharp has he referenced them to be.
