I’ve cold started three Mr Heaters with a 20lb propane tank. I always thought pushing the control knob down in the pilot position and holding it would bleed the line. I thought the off position meant “off”. My experience is a push in the pilot position takes about 15 to 20 seconds with a new line, tank and heater. Just my experience.

Yes, just bought a heater like this and you need to bleed the line after you hook it up for just 15-30 seconds in the pilot position, not the off position. And, the hose I attached to the 20 lb tank screws on in the normal clockwise configuration - not backward threaded.
@elizabetholiviaclark
@elizabetholiviaclark Год назад
@@robthoch I don't understand. The threads on flammable gas cylinder connections are reversed. It's impossible to screw on an attachment by turning it to the right. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you've said.

I’ve got the Big Buddy heater and have used it for years. I bought both the 12’ Mr Heater hose with the regulator and a filter. I’ve not found it necessary to install the filter and I just use the 12’ hose with the regulator. My hose has the quick connection. It is necessary to hold the pilot button down for at least 30 seconds before clicking to light the pilot in order to purge the hose. My heater works just fine even above 9,000 ft without adjustment. What a great heater!

Lots of great and "simple to understand" tips there! One potential problem I will comment on (learned from operating my BBQ and installing a new propane tank in it) is the need to SLOWLY open the tank valve so that the regulator can allow full pressure to flow through it. Maybe the regulator on the Mr. Heater is not as sensitive, but maybe it is!

Use a long nose lighter (Bic/Scripto/etc) to assist with lighting it, while in the pilot mode hold it there till there is a flame, then and only then turn it to low..if you don't see the burner light up turn it off and start over. Mine has been used so much that it is impossible to light it any other way. Never allow it to flow gas when it is not lit, there is a sensor that will not allow gas to flow if the pilot is not burning. Expect to do maintenance on it about every 100 hours of use, propane will build up an oily substance in the aluminum fuel tubes inside of it, you'll need to remove them and blow them out and flush with naphtha or Coleman camp fuel to get it out. It isn't easy to do, and if you do this you'll realize the manufacture designed it that way so you'll just throw it away and buy a new one. You have to take everything apart in order to access the aluminum tubes..I'd buy another brand if there were any. I have found the filters to be ineffective at preventing oily build up, so I quit using them.

Interesting. I've a Mr Buddy myself. Mines the smaller one. I've had it 5 1/2 years with no problems. I'd recommend looking at and inspecting ALL gaskets and mounting surfaces before hooking up. Even new stuff can be defective. If and when you change propane tanks, check that the O ring gasket is good and properly seated on hose end, look too in propane tank mounting area for debris and that its gasket is proper. When I turn mine off, I turn off propane tank and let flame die out, then turn off Mr Buddy. This makes sure no gas is in the line. When starting, I turn on propane tank a 1/4 turn, put my Mr Buddy nob to pilot, press down and hold for 10 seconds, release, then hit again and it lights. I turn it to lowest setting first, this allows it to heat more slowly before going to the high setting. Mine only has low and high. It shouldn't take 15 minutes, especially when new, as it ages, periodically vacuum by the igniter, and also the front heat source while it's off AND cool. I use mine a lot. Very nice unit.

@@jaysmokey Why? When all you need to check your connections is soapy water in a spray bottle. That's how all the people in my field do it. Spend a few extra bucks and get the hose that does not require a filter. I think 80% of the problems people have with these heaters is pilot light goes out. I can tell you that the issue is the connection at the tank. The tank connection is very finnicky - too tight and the o-ring on the brass adapter blocks fuel flow. Too loose and the tank will not provide a fuel flow. To get 100% reliable operation, you need to mess with the tank connection until you get fuel flow.

A better way to leak check the gas fitting, is to simply use a small bowl partially filled with about 1/4 cup of water then put several drops of Dawn liquid soap into the water and gently stir the mixture with a small spoon until it's mixed without creating any bubbles then spread the mixture over the fitting with a small 1 inch brush... If there are any leaks, bubbles will appear from the smooth mixture so you can see exactly where it's leaking.

I saw a suggestion that having the Mr. Buddy elevated above the 20 lb propane tank will make for a faster purging of the line on first startup. The theory is that propane is heavier than air so the air will stay on top of the propane as it is vented. If the heater and tank on the same level the propane and air kind of mix equally and it takes longer to get a pure propane stream to ignite the pilot.

Hello, as someone who knows a thing or two about LP appliances and applications, I hope this comment helps someone. For the Big Buddy use the hose with part number F271803 or whatever equivalent 3rd party hose equipped with a low pressure regulator and 3/8" quick disconnect. I've become frustrated (and to that note, not Kevin's fault) with all the resources seeming to default pointing to some hose with a "filter" or some other magical hose that doesn't require a filter when connecting the Big Buddy to a 20 lb tank. The reason why these hoses need a filter is because high pressure hoses especially when not properly bled after each use will degrade the plasticizers in the rubber and introduce contaminants in the line. The only reason why these hoses exist is because the smaller Buddy portable does not come equipped with a 3/8" male quick disconnect. For the Big Buddy model, there's just no sense in running 12 ft of high pressure LP line requiring additional built-in high-flow safety restrictor into a fuel filter to then be stepped down by a regulator to operating pressure when there is a quick disconnect available to run a low pressure line straight to the unit at operating pressure. Low pressure LP lines will last a whole lot longer and do not need to be filtered as there is no risk to the rubber degrading and bleeding contaminants. Additionally, there is no "cold start" nonsense with the low pressure line--the unit fires right up without a hiccup.

With his, you moved the indicator to pilot and depressed the pilot button for one minute (that expelled the air in the line) then you lit the pilot light with a long nose lighter and held the button for 30 seconds, while the thermocouple heated up. After that, you turned the button to on and a flame came up. You pointed out the clear plastic nipples covering the propane tubes, some folks forget about those and have to call the manufacturer before they can get their heater running. To eliminate or "shorten" the 15 minutes, you can connect hose to filter and then turn on the gas which fills the hose and purges most of air bubbles out. You only need to run it 10-15 seconds and if your outside the gas won't hurt you. Then immediately close the valve and instantly connect the other end to the heater. Yes, you waste a little gas running it 10-15 seconds But you will eliminate the 15 minutes delay.

I want to chime in concerning some of the hose part numbers mentioned in the comments and whether or not an in-line filter is needed…if you purchase Mr. Heater “Big/Tough Buddy 12 ft Propane Hose Assembly with Regulator” (Quick Connect x Regulator w/Acme Nut) with either part number F271803 or part number F271804, you DO NOT NEED AN IN-LINE FILTER. These 12 ft hoses are constructed of materials that do not degrade nor contaminate the propane entering the heater with its’ own in-line regulator at the tank hook up end. You will not hook up into the Mr. Heater left-hand side regulator as shown in this video, hence these hose’s female quick-disconnect will hook straight up to the male quick-disconnect fitting that sits right behind the Mr. Heater’s built-in regulator on the left-hand side of the heater as you face it (neither built-in regulator, left or right-hand side will be used). I’ve been using these hoses for years on my three model MH18B Big Buddy Heaters with built-in fans and have never had a single problem. These hoses I mentioned run about $50-60 each and are well worth the small investment so you can run 20lb or otherwise cylinders. Purge the air from your 12ft hose in the pilot position until you smell a little gas flow, then turn the control knob off. Let that little bit of propane dissipate in the air, then light the heater as normal. For those that are looking for an a/c adapter for the built-in fan if you have the older MH18B models, so you don’t have to be dependent on D batteries all the time, I purchased three a/c adapters from Amazon years ago. The a/c adapters have PWR+ on the front, on the rear of the plug they have Model # PWR-TAA06008, Item # PF8-UL, Input 100-240V AC, Output 6V DC 0.8A. I’m sure Amazon still sells them, and I think they were about $10/ea if memory serves, but don’t quote me on that. The fan on a/c power runs slightly more rpm/air flow than running on D batteries. This a/c adapter cord is about 6 ft 6 in long. Hopefully this info will help some of you folks looking to get off the expensive 1lb propane bottle train (unless you refill them from a 20lb or larger cylinder with the right adapter) and the expense of D batteries at times if you have a 110v outlet nearby or run a short length extension cord to get you where you need to go with the a/c fan adapter. Semper Fi!

I believe there has been an update to the Amazon listing. Now they recommend using their 10' hose assembly (F273704) which does NOT require the filter. Apparently, when this video was made and using the F273701 hose that hose was made with oils in the rubber that can leach out under pressure. Hence, the need for a filter so the oil doesn't gum up the internals of the Big Buddy heater. The new hose (F273704) is made without oil so there is nothing to leach out and cause problems with the Big Buddy. Is this correct?

Yep! That's what I did too. The 10' hose lets me move the heater away from the tank. I can't remember but they say the type of hose allows you to not have to use a filter. Mine is the older heater with the fan. I love that option. And of course I have a carbon monoxide meter handy. The only time it went off was when the tank was almost empty and the pressure was low and caused insufficient buen.

I think people get confused on two issues. 1. Mr. heater sells some hoses that require a filter and some that do not. The hoses that do not are made out of a different material that does not leach oils under high pressure from the propane tanks. The 1lb bottles are low pressure, but anything larger is high pressure. Why Mr. heater would sell hoses that require a filter is ridiculous. If someone purchases an aftermarket hose, then I can see the filter being required. 2. All Mr. heaters have a fixed regulator to the heater that cannot be removed (as shown in this video). When using anything other than the 1lb bottles, some people make the mistake of using a hose with a regulator on it, which leads to overregulation as there is the regulator at the heater as you clearly shoe. Only the newer larger Mr. heaters have a quick connect next to the fixed regulator that bypasses that regulator. In that scenario you can use a hose with a regulator on. Mr. Heater sells a 12 foot hose with a quick connect that does not require a filter. With the quick connect there is no way to attach a filter.
