I used mine for 2 months straight on 20lb tanks with a filter and thought I would be okay based on the instructions. But I clogged my filter and heater with the oils. I'm going to invest in the buddy hose and change filters more often. The agent that's added to propane is oily and builds up in tanks especially when they are overfilled. Great video 👍

I have the "old" Big Buddy with the battery powered fan in it. I bought it last year for $120 at Sam's. Only difference it looks like between the Pro and what I got is the electronic start. I'm happy with my purchase because it was cheaper and I don't have to worry about the electronic start.

Yeah if you can grab one of the OG Big Buddy heaters that had the fan at the regular Big Buddy price its a great deal. I will say though the electronic ignition is awesome, just tape an extra AAA battery inside one of the propane doors so you have it, but they usually last a good year plus based on the other heaters I have with it

I have the same ‘old’ heater but with the fan. Hardly even even use the fan. Lol but I run that heater in the garage. I run a small heat hog not on my outings on the ice.

I run two of the original BB pro with fan. They have the same battery door~ no screws. The fan is awesome. Helps a lot. Wouldn’t want to rely on electric start in Manitoba winters, I’ll keep my manual start! Great video comparing them!

I would have thought the new heater was less money with that POS battery igniter. I have never had a problem with my piezoelectric starter, and it is always ready. Piezo is a very reliable ignition source and doesn't have a corrosive bomb inside if you forget to take it out when winter is over. As far as the fan, my old Buddy Heaters have fans and I my farts move more air than the fan. I tried it a long time ago and replaced it with a thermal fan for a wood stove. I take my heaters with me to the Nevada desert for a back up in my camper and I keep them in the original box when they are not being used. I use one of them to heat my shop all winter, 24/7, 9 gallons in 7 days. I measure my propane in gallons, just like the man who sells it to me! If you asked for pounds of propane you might get slapped! A Texas Fruitcake metal box is the perfect size to keep your extra hoses and filters as well as your thermal fan, but any of the cheap snap-lock boxes from Costco would work fine. Keep them clean and test them before you use them in the fall and you will never be left out in the cold, pun intended!

Nice to have a thermostat. Now that they have 6 or 7 models it's pretty dumb not to have one with a thermostat.
@AlexTimm

If it can be implemented well I agree, only portable one with a thermostat I have found so far is the Flame King and those have issues in how they open and close the gas valve using the thermostat

I just got one and my fan is far from quiet as shown in this video! I think I'd rather have the old starter vs the one that requires a battery. Another thing I've noticed is that the first burner always has a flame going up to nearly the grate, even on low, while the second one doesn't. I compared this to my regular buddy and I don't see the same issue with its single burner.

Looking at doing your livescope build. Saw the garmin 106. Do you have any idea why it’s been discontinued? Can’t find anything online
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 4 месяца назад
The 106 that was on the basically half off price was bundled with the GT54-UHD transducer so a discontinued and promo only product. Garmin came out with the Ultra 2 series that is now in stores, so all the Ultra 106's including those with the newer GT56-UHD transducer are considered previous model and will no longer be sold as current inventory. From my experience though, I bet around the holidays we will see them pop back up again for ~$1000 and sometimes on other random promo periods

I have been looking to upgrade my Buddy heater. I have the smaller one at the moment. I am wondering with the abnormally warm winter if I should wait until spring and see if the price drops. I currently use a stove fan on mine, but like the idea of the all in one. Since I am a flash/headlight junkie, I always have extra batteries with me so that is a non issue. Does the internal fan push hard enough to move the heat significantly ? After writing this I clicked on you links and Amazon has them for $131.48. I think I am going to buy one.
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 4 месяца назад
If you are looking at the Pro they might go on a deal once they have been out for a while, but that may take a while. If you are looking for the standard Big Buddy, now is a good time to buy as you can get them for $109.99 (perhaps even cheaper if you find a better random sale). Only time the standard Big Buddy is cheaper is usually Black Friday time frame when they go down to $89.99 & $99.99 depending on the day The internal fan is decent - I wouldn't say anything amazing, but I might try and see if there is a way to upgrade it to a higher CFM fan

@AlexTimm, what is the best hose to use with this heater for a larger propane tank? I don't see the link.
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 4 месяца назад
I'll add it in the description, it is this hose: at.fish/Heater10ftHoseF273704 No need for a fuel filter with it and it won't gum up your heater, it is a special composition of the rubber and the only one made like it.
@jaybaker9684

@AlexTimm I would still recommend the filter the propane you get from your 20lb is not near as clean and filtered as the extra clean propane from the small 1lb tanks.
@NWcpl

Question: if you use the big buddy pro with a 20lb tank do you have to plug in two of them (one to each side) to make both sides of the big buddy heater to work. if you only use one side will only one side heat up?
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm Месяц назад
Yes 1 tank is all that is needed for it to work on high on both sides
@NWcpl
@NWcpl Месяц назад
@@AlexTimm Thats great. I appreciate the response. i have my pro in route with the buddy stock hose so no filter required, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a separate connection for the 20lb connect on the back side of the swivel connection? if so would i need a regulator on that? sorry for all the questions new at this. Thank you Alex.

The fan is weak and barely worth having. I have the original big buddy that had a fan and one of the units that came without the fan. To be honest I prefer the cheaper price, less weight (especially considering the batteries), and no worries about the electric start. I like the non-pro version. I would buy that given the option between the two.
