My birth city has kind of a Beatnik atmosphere now, and I love it. Poetry readings, little downtown art scenes/studios, coffeehouses, etc. I wasn't alive when the original Beatniks roamed the earth, but the Neo-Beatnik movement seems to be gathering steam in my generation and beyond.

The major diference between the Beatniks and Hipsters, are that the first just came out of World War 2...the latter just came out of their parents basement...

Countercultures need something to counter. The Beats and the Hippies had the WWII generation getting their clammy hands into everything. The Hipsters do not.

Damn, this show had swagger and great pacing. I had hereunto thought it was more in line with the limp vapidity of some of the lesser Hanna-Barbera bits.
I watched these cartoons when I was a kid in the 1970's you know, ( the generation where most of us aren't offended by anything) and loved it. Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons had lots of great characters. Unfortunately kids today are too easily offended by everything and would probably never leave their " Safe Spaces" after watching 1 1/2 minutes of an episode, "Reeeeeeeeeeeeee"
Funny how he left out all those incredible Beat authors. Kerouac absolutely hated the media-created name "Beatnik"..........soon to be replaced with the media-created name "Hippy." We called ourselves "Freaks." Go figure.
Some things never change. Unfortunately, now the majority are bums with sunglasses who hang out in coffee houses and don't need unemployment lines because they shamelessly collect welfare.
Ben noneofyourbeeswax There were hipsters in the 40's and 50's I think... I believe the word "Hippie" comes from that, too. But I don't think those hipsters back then were the same as those of today... Although I'm not to sure on that...
I love it when he says un employment line, that is what most hipsters do, they are white liberals in there 20's who have some kind of useless philosophy degree and want to live off of hard working peoples dollars, no wonder why they love Obama.
I just said to my wife, I never knew that they had Capucchino, nor Expresso coffee. We are both from NYC (Brooklyn), and never saw coffee like this. Of course, most New Yorkers that we knew back in the 50's and 60's, would order their coffee thusly, two sugars, and two (Very) small containers of milk. At least I think it was milk. Rocky and Bullwinkle were my favorite cartoon as a kid in the 60's! Of course, the stooges were my all time favorites, for comedy. Loved those guys!

Beatniks are the ORIGINAL Hippies. The term Beatnik was meant as a derogatory term to describe that nonconformist artsy type of 1950's person, especially in the later part of the decade. Who thought that life was more than acquiring material wealth and keeping up with the Joneses.

A sub-culture with qualitative uses of expression. Such expression of ideas, concepts, and language as communication which mainstream culture does use with high frequency. The number of people within the sub-culture contribute to a individualized behavioral science based on the sub-culture communication. The internet allows for the behavioral analysis of sub-culture. The internet is a "commerical activity" such as adult entertainment, or religion as a sub-culture that economics applied.
Beatniks are like cool hippies. They're nothing like hipsters. Hipsters aren't vacant enough to be near either on the style spectrum. Beatniks wear black in order to keep things cool and expressionless. We don't want to make any kind of statement; we're just keeping it real. Damn I need more jazz clubs around my town to mingle with my kind.
