Well done for playing the full fat solo from the 94 Astoria live version ( a.k.a. the definitive version ) ( and for anyone reading, the solo starts at 4:14 )
Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me atm you can stream all the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf for the last couple of days =)
the other night there was a big, bright full moon, and i went on the roof to enjoy it with mr. moon as the soundtrack. upon learning of his passing this morning, i thought of you since i consider you to be the top toby smith student and appreciator. you're the next best thing, keep his legacy alive!
Nice! You are the rare cool people who play real rhodes and vinyl! I appreciate it a lot! Just curious, where did you get the rhodes and the record and the turntable?
Hi there, I got the Rhodes from the states - the original owner was called 'Lamar Edward Wayne' and it's basically in new condition. The records I pick up when I find them - that was probably from an online store sometime though. Have you got a Rhodes?
@tomogradymusic Thanks for the answer, btw I found that there are programs that emulate rhodes sound, one of them is called scarbee mark1 which costs like 100eur. So as I understand I can get thomann dp-25 or sp-5100, connect it to my pc via usb port, and have emulated rhodes sound ?
que buenas notas hermano. que bien que suena eso, tiene un efecto que no se como se llama, que tiene ese sonido que queda brillando, la verdad mortal man, toda la onda.
Hey everyone, I am thinking to learn to play keyboards - do you need Rhodes piano to have similar sound as Toby had in early Jamiroquai albums, or there is something cheaper in 200-500$ range ? Thanks
Jeremy Sinclair Ah yes - and there's a 'how to play' video at half speed as well, if you want to play it yourself? This is one of my favourites of all time too!
@lokiop345 Hi mate, thanks for the comment! I'm in Cambridge - takes me no time to get to London, I've done quite a few gigs down there before - Cargo, Hackney Empire, Big Chill House, Jazz Cafe etc...what's your project gonna be? Cheers, Tom
@ShadowRave Ah yes, I don't know why I got those two things wrong in my info on this video - I know both those things you mention. I must have copied across text from one of my Emergency on Planet Earth videos and then just changed the album title without changing 'debut'. I'll correct my text now - cheers.
Amazing vids - would love to see some of the live stuff like travelling without moving on Jools Holland, camera pans past Toby's hands at one point and he's flying lol
Please do Space cowboy! The album version from Return of the space cowboy, not the crappy single version. There are some really cool keyboardstuff in that tune, check it out
@Ormtast Hi there, thanks for the message. Toby used a suitcase Rhodes on all the albums from Emergency up to his departure after Synkronised. So if you want to nail that sound, that's what you need. Having said that, you're unlikely to find a good one for $500 - so either save up, or go and try the keyboards you've mentioned in person. They'll all have an electric piano sound, and it's probably best you listen to it in person as you play, before you buy :D I hope that helps!
Hi there - this is the real deal - a real Rhodes - no settings for any of those things you mentioned I'm afraid, apart from the tremolo speed and intensity - I just listened to the original track and tried to match it. The rest is voicing and tuning the piano...
Hey bro, I know this question might have been asked before but don't mind me. I'm a kind of beginner on the Keys. What chords are you playing? or do you have the sheet music for this? Thanks!
@Ormtast Hi there, I would probably investigate destituteillusion's recommendation - I'm out of touch with emulators because I haven't had to use them (although I have heard the scarbee). Good luck!
I've studied and played guitar for quite some time (about 15 years) and bass. I prefer bass nowadays though. Yeah Maybe I could record some stuff. I just haven't had the proper recording equipment but as it happens I do now. Would be real cool to jam with some of your recorded Jamiroquai tunes!
I'll get onto it as soon as I can! Don't diss the single - Stuart Zender was on bass for that one, and although I think Toby's keyboards are better on the album version, the bass is damn funky on that single!
The solo I played was 100% off the record until the song fades out (it might sound different because some phrases drop in volume during the album version), then I used Toby's solo from a live gig in 1994.
Nah I never liked the single. Everything is better on the album version. Bass, keys. And I don't like that they changed the bridge.. Anyway! Would be awesome if you covered it! :) All the best
