The day has come: The La Salle Causeway is once again open to road traffic. It should be appreciated just how much work has been involved. Updates will be made whenever a significant change occurs. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has been so supportive of this series.

The whole process was a delight to follow. Seeing a job get done and done efficiently is heartening. Your professional dronesmanship and descriptions are worth a lot.

Thanks so much, Patricia - I felt quite strongly that the whole process, which has had a significant effect on the life of our city, should be fully documented. It's also really important, I feel, to showcase the extraordinary work of a strong team benefiting from contributions by several specialist companies.

i have been following these updates with great pleasure. Now retired in Victoria, I drove the Causeway more times than I care to count and lived close enough to have been lulled to sleep by the "music" of the old bridge. Thank you for all the fine work.

Marc - the process is challenging, but relatively straightforward for a strong engineering team. It's likely to be a very similar procedure to the one adopted when the bridge deck of the now demolished bridge was removed. You can see that in the update from June 20th entitled 'Slip, Sliding Away'. Thanks for your interest and support

Great News! I remember the days when one had to board a ferry to get to Wolfe island, so this is quite the marvel for me! I have one request. I would like to see the "bridge" in operation when it needs to move to open a channel for a boat! I have a vague idea of it moving along some form of rail system, backwards or forwards, but haven't quite been able to figure out just how that movement is accomplished, nor the length of time it takes to open and then reconnect, though I assume it is till faster than the time it took a ferry back in the dark ages before this masterpiece of a bridge!
@Aerosnapper
@Aerosnapper 2 дня назад
Thank you - I should correct what I think may be a misperception. Access to Wolfe Island continues to be by ferry. This bridge connects downtown Kingston with the eastern sections of the city. I will certainly be following and sharing the work to remove and replace this temporary bridge later this month. You can see how it's likely to be done if you look back at the June 20th video 'Slip, Sliding Away'

Your drone will be missed flying around the bridge. It's so nice to see that the bridge is up and usable now. I'm going to be the "Grinch," but how many businesses will see their tills overflow with the money they "lost" during the closure? That goes for both sides of the bridge.
@Aerosnapper
@Aerosnapper 2 дня назад
Marilyn - thank you - I don't think it's Grinch-like to be realistic. No one would have wished any harm to our beautiful lift bridge, but the work to address the challenge its demolition brought has been done quickly and well. Reality bites - and hopefully there's a strong season ahead for most of the affected businesses - though not an option for the tour operators sadly
@marilynturcotte5304
@marilynturcotte5304 День назад
I think only the tour operators were severely impacted. I know of some businesses here in the East End that were impacted by consumers who had expressed themselves as not wanting to drive a few extra kilometres from the West and possibly having to drive past the HUB and witness the "other side" of Kingston live. It's so sad, but that's the world we live in. I'm going to miss the daily flights over the Cause Way, but damn glad the traffic at HWY 15 and Gore is going to be sane in the morning.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this, it was great for those of us that was curious as to what was going on. Question for you, I'm noticing more and more the workers seeing your drone and waving at you. Do you think the workers liked being watched or did they grow used to it? Did you hear/talk with them at all during the course of doing this?
@Aerosnapper
@Aerosnapper День назад
Thank you, James. It’s been an interesting spell. On the worker front - yes, I try to talk to folk, but it has to be off site. I think it becomes clear quite quickly that my interest is in showcasing contributions, not catching anyone out. Friends and family often love to see their people at work. It’s important to be as respectful of safety as the crew are - avoiding distraction and never showing anything that might attract adverse commentary

Road traffic for 12 days then they remove this bridge for marine traffic for 7 hours then reinstall the bridge for one month then remove it again for another 7 hours of marine traffic and again reinstall the bridge for the winter season. No information for construction of a new bridge yet. This temporary bridge will most likely be for the winter season and removed for the summer marine traffic of 2025, then reinstalled for winter 25/26, .... then ? Good luck to the good people of Kingston.
@Aerosnapper
@Aerosnapper 2 дня назад
Your concern is understandable - but we can only wait to see what actually happens in 2025. It's pretty clear that everyone will have a say in the way ahead and that no one is intentionally delaying or disadvantaging any section of our community. Perhaps we should focus on how well the response to an unwelcome event has been managed

@@Aerosnapper It's unfortunately always a question of dollars, ... Obviously, this bridge is of importance both for the people of the Kingston area and the marine interest. Hope they work hard to achieve a great end result. Have a good day sir and as always thanks.

What's the new bridge supposed to look like? Any drawings?
@Aerosnapper
@Aerosnapper 2 дня назад
A question on everyone's mind - the process of identifying a permanent replacement that is moveable is still very much in the process of forming vapourware
@bopcomm
@bopcomm День назад
@@Aerosnapper WHY does it have to be a movable bridge? There is enough of a stretch of highway & land to look to a much longer permanent bridge with enough clearance underneath for marine traffic.Look at the new Toronto bridges in the new DockLands project: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iaiiL2c3NRQ.html Made in Canada, and come in all sizes and elevation pitches. Moving bridges ALWAYS break eventually. Let's have something colorful (you should see them at night), and that DOESN'T break! ;>)
@ronblack7870
@ronblack7870 2 дня назад
i still say the original bridge could have been repaired . it's just the engineers in charge didn't want to take responsibility for the repair. these are the same fools that told the contractor to remove the braces on the member that then buckled without even supporting the counterweight. were they saving money ? well that certainly worked out. my plan would be support the counterweight fully , cut out the buckled member replace with heavier rolled steel channel with high strength bolts in the same rivet holes then clad with steel plate like they wanted to do in the original plan. weld the joints as a secondary measure. so this is temporary. what will the permanent bridge be and what will that cost?

It's easy to come up with solutions when you don't have any responsibility for implementing or funding them. At some point we all have to have a little faith in the decisions taken by those who have all the facts and control the budget. Life can sometimes be challenging, but it's all we have to go on
