this episode breaks my heart, it's sickeningly raw, but a very important episode both for elliot's character and victims who have experienced something similar to him. i love this show so much :(
I wouldn't say a film, it's more like a proper traditional five act stage play, which is what they're trying to convey at the end. There's some exceptional acting in this episode, I remember being particularly impressed with Elliot Villar at the time, but everybody in the episode, some of Christian Slater's acting and also obviously Rami Malek. What I think is clever about this episode is taking a throwaway pantomime villain and making him a pivotal part of unlocking the truth of why we're even here at all.
Yeah honestly it wasn't for me it was a bit too like...campy for an episode like this. But I knew as I watched it that this feels like a play and there's a stylistic reason for it I just don't get why. Because all of this is a big play Elliot puts on for himself to distract himself from his trauma? I got nothin.
It became more and more clear over time that Elliot likely had Dissociative Identity Disorder (which was previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder) from certain things about his dynamic with Mr Robot: the amnesia barriers, Mr Robot “taking punches for” Elliot, etc. D.I.D. is thought to form in childhood due to the formation of amnesia barriers due to trauma in a time where the brain is still developing, especially when a child has a conflicting relationship with an adult figure in their life. For example, a child may love their father, but once their father does something to them, they form an amnesia barrier to forget the trauma. This can form a split in which one part of them remembers what was done to them, and the other does not, and eventually, as that child develops, entirely different identities can develop as well, a lot of the time serving functions such as protecting the system (all identities, called alters, together) from trauma or prosecuting the system out of self-blame. It is common for some alters to remember their trauma and others to not. And finally, one of the most common causes of DID, due to the conflicting relationship with a guiding figure, is childhood sexual abuse. While Elliot’s mothers’ abuse may have been the cause alone, many fans speculated that something worse involving his father occurred, especially because alters which take the form of the central abuser are very common in DID (though that is not to say they are the same as the abuser at all). I find it funny that you say “This is definitely something that has happened in real life!” when, yes, it definitely has, and is actually not that uncommon of a condition.
I cried too when I first saw this episode. Cried on the re-watch. Cried during this reaction. It completely connects with the lurking reality of lost innocence lying dormant within all of us.
The first time I saw this episode I was in complete denial and tried so hard to dismiss it as bad or cheap writing but on my second watch of the series things were crystal clear from episode one. This episode was so painful to watch the second time around. The acting, score, directing is all perfect. This episode completely changes the context of a lot of key thing in this series. I highly suggest you re-watch the series on your own time once you're finished because this show gets better with each re-watch.
@@ItApproaches no it really was not, dissociative identity disorder usually occurs when people experience such traumatic experiences that their brain dissociates from itself, and they start to form alternate personalities, the "protector" personality, (mr robot) is actually the most common personality among people with real d.i.d. , the protector personality knows the truth of what traumatized the person, but the "original" personality does not remember it. So the plot is very well written in terms of mental health issues, considering this is something that often happens in these cases. Now is it a cheap plot twist? I wouldn't say so. The episode was undeniably very well made, from the cinematography to the storytelling, the plot twist seems to have been thought out from the beginning, as the original commentor here pointed out there were many hints, hints like elliot not wanting to be touched by others, elliot targeting pdiphiles in the first episode and more.... So i completely disagree with your take here.
@@ItApproaches It rally was not a poor choice. Go back and watch the series again or just try not being ignorant. This was setup from the start. People figured this plot point out before this episode aired
@@anthos332 "Rally?" I know it was planned from the start, doesn't change it was a poor writing choice. There was no ignorant. You humans really are so brain dead that your default reaction to someone saying a view so different then you own bias egoic view must be "ignorance". You have a long way to go kid.
Poor Elliot being physically and emotionally abused by his mother and sexually abused by his father 😢 next episode is one of my favourites of the whole show👍🏼 oh and the music played during the therapy scene is used again in a future episode. It would be interesting if you notice it and why they use it😁 Great video 💯👍🏼
His mother wasn't really abusive I don't believe. That's Elliot projecting the father's abuse onto her. If you'll remember the episode when she dies, all the woman at the nursing home can say is what a wonderful person she was and how everyone there just loved her. It's the first clue really about Elliots dad.
When you said "I'm not ready for it to end" I felt that lol. It's just as great when you rewatch it, but it's even more fun watching along with thoughtful reactors like you. Can't believe we're almost at the end, but looking forward to see your reactions to the rest of it!
I'm not sure my heart has ever beat so fast watching something as when I watched this episode when it aired ad free. When it ended, I'm not sure I was capable of thinking of anything else for about 30 minutes.
One of the best episodes of tv ever. The acting performances, the writing, the cinematography, the lighting, the soundtrack, everything is 10/10. The fact that this has been building for 3 and a half seasons and you can look back to the first episode for the breadcrumbs Sam Esmail had been laying is so rare on tv.
Uno reverse. For me the worst episode of the show. Sure the acting, lighting, cinematography and such was all good, but it felt like it was from some other show. It didn't fit Mr. Robot at all.
@@ItApproaches yet the sitcom did? The episode without dialogue did? What about the finale? Mr. Robot is an experimental show and saying one episode doesn’t fit with the others is the point.
the condition that elliot has is a real condition and it's essentially a more intense form of ptsd. when a child experiences severe or repeated trauma while their personality is still forming, it can split, thus making different identities instead of the "usual" whole one. unfortunately it's not as rare as some think, something like the same amount of people with red hair in the world have this condition. all those poor kids 💔
I know a few psychologists who have watched this show, while this situation CAN happen, it is insanely rare. Almost never would the kid go in that direction.
@@ItApproaches dissociative identity disorder is incredibly rare, however how the show portrayed his dissociative identity disorder is incredibly consistent and accurate. From the "protector personality" (which is usually the most common personality people with did form), to his incredibly traumatic experience causing it, to some personalities remembering what traumatised elliot (usually the protector personalities), and actual elliot not remembering. i would say its very accurate.
@@ItApproaches why the fuck are you so smug? "feel free to say the sky is yellow" implies there's some objective factor onto why this is "bad writing", you didn't make any arguments to support that so i have no reason to agree with your take. since there werent any arguments here of course i'm going to call it your personal take, from what ive observed thats exactly what it is, your personal subjective belief....
This guy really knows how to make something out of nothing and maximize the things he can control and minimize the things he can't control, a real peoples observer. Loving your reactions, was waiting for this episode for months ❤
We finally here ladies and gentlemen. One of the most important episodes and entertaining displays of acting from this show. It gets crazier still lolol
It's been 9 months and I can't fathom how you think this. But you couldn't empathize with Olivia so maybe I shouldn't even try. Do you realize your idea of it being a show about "lonely hacker vs rich" only works because Elliot is lonely because of being abused badly as a child?
@@kvm6Course you can't fathom how I think. Those who can't use logic can't understand those who do. 97% of humanity can't understand the 3% that can use logic. Humans are brain dead sheep. Universal truth, accept it and grow, or reject that truth and waste your life being miserable. I don't care.
