While Hollywood goes creatively bankrupt in order to ensure profits, TV shows like Mr. Robot keep the spirit of cinema alive by taking risks and wowing audiences with boundary pushing stories.

Season 4 is so wild, yet still so grounded in classic film techniques and tonal cues. Season 4 is probably the best season, but that's only because the rest of the show is so cohesive and incredible. I don't want this show to end. Best tv series of all time.

@@QazwerDave that whole episode if eXit where Elliot is transferred into a world where everything is perfect was all fake it wasn't some alternate dimension where we believed no it was a prison as the Elliot in that world said his life is a repeat a mundane boring world which he still loves but totally boring. Our Elliot wanted his world but that world was created to protect the real Elliot, because the Elliot we have been following throughout the Mr. Robot was not the real Elliot it was another personality to protect the real Elliot, he was the mastermind behind everything. The reason Mastermind Elliot wanted to steal his life because he wanted to be in control after he worked so hard to create this world that he saved for the real Elliot, after the countless deaths of his friends and loved ones, he wanted happiness but it wasn't his to keep. Tl;dr Elliot we have been following is a persona created go protect the real Elliot and Whiterose's never worked the alternate dimension was Elliot's subconscious

What so impressive about the almost completely silent episode is that I literally didn't notice it until after I was done. Most shows would try to draw attention to it in a "aren't we being clever and experimental" kinda way. But the setup and execution are so clean, if for example Elliott hadn't stopped narrating this season it would feel abrupt that he doesn't say anything when he's in that kind of high-stress situation. But we have gotten used to Mr Robot taking that job and since he's not there you don't think about it. It also works because there are no movements you would associate with trying to be expressive without words.
@RobotHau5
@RobotHau5 4 года назад
Nice way of putting it! I didn't notice until I saw this video, and tbh the way he filmed moment to moment highlighted what you're watching vs what you thought you needed to hear. When I was taking a design course, my prof told me to try to write a story without any dialogue. I thought that would be boring but clearly I had no clue what could be done with little to none.

@talentleesdorito9771 4 года назад

@alexengland-shinemercy
@alexengland-shinemercy 4 года назад
I felt the same. When I heard people talking about 'the silent episode' I wondered wtf they were talking about because I had defiitely seen every episode released up to that point, and I hadn't noticed any damn 'silent episode'. That was because it was so effective Iit hadn't jarred me at all and I hadn't noticed it. Talking would not have added anytihng in that episode, and the carft of writing the script *so* show-not-tell that dialogue would not have aided anything.... that left me pretty gobsmacked. And the premise of the vid here? TV is the new cinema? I had no TV for most of my life because it was mostly cheap, boring and unstimulating content. Now I have a TV (albeit minus traditional TV connection, it just has a chromecast attached) and haven't been to the cinema for years apart from a language-learning trip with students. I think the streaming networks' takeover of the creative ground is a fait accompli - they now have the originators of art in the medium coming to *them* asking for a space to crrate in. It's not just Scorcese, it's also creators of fantasy, of comedy.... Good Omens worked so well Gaiman is looking to bring The Sandman to a network, after decades spent nixing studio's attempts to get it on film. I don't know if cinema can come back from this.

Finally someone who understands! I've been hyping up Mr. Robot since the first season. The storyline, acting, and cinematography are unlike anything else I've seen in a while. I refuse to buy into the Marvel movie because like you said, they are generic and anticlimactic. Sad to see Mr. Robot end but respect that they have had the end game in mind since the first season. Much better than the crappy end to GoT.

Mr. Robot really takes a lot of risks, such as that one-take episode from season three, silent-episode, and the stageplay one, along with the sitcom. But there is also an entire flashback episode in season three, which is kinda crazy too. Even the episodes in season four are written in a way that it matches the 4** error codes, like 401 Unauthorized, 402 Payment Required, and so on. It's amazing and I am sad it's ending, but at the same time, happy that it doesn't go on forever like the Walking Dead.
@RobotHau5
@RobotHau5 4 года назад
Wow I didn't even realize the 4** codes thing lol although I suspected it considering the show's choices in titling. It is a shame that this rollercoaster is coming to an end but as a lover of storytelling, its a must. WD is in the Milking seasons. I love their concepts but its too much at this point. Mr Robot knows not to milk its greatness. Let it simmer.

Game of Thrones was like that kid that shows a lot of potential (season 1), goes to high school and get great notes (seasons 2 to 4), then meet someone who throws him into drugs and other shit (showrunners running out of material and having to create something by themselves), start doing some stupid shit (season 5, Dorne, etc) and then you see that kid in his 30s absolutely ruined (seasons 7 and 8).

In 2019 alone TV has given me much more to think about and discuss with friends than film has. Even something as silly as Rick and Morty generated deeper discussions, a half hour animated comedy show had more substance than most major Hollywood films. My brother and I were obsessed with Mr Robot and Watchmen, eagerly awaiting the next episode, each getting bigger and crazier and less predictable than the last. We really had no idea where these wild journeys were taking us and it was thrilling, It felt like anything was possible. Where as when I watch an MCU movie and a character seems to be in peril, I'm sitting there thinking about whose contracts run out soon. And this contrast is perfectly illustrated by Star Wars, did Rise of Skywalker create that much of an impact? Not really, everyone is discussing the Mandalorian, well specifically Baby Yoda, but the show is still a breath of fresh air.

I think David Lynch really got the ball rolling when he created Twin Peaks, a TV show that 30 years later, we're still having fun experiencing and studying because it was so much richer than most other TV shows ever. However, it was too far ahead of its time, and networks tried to force it to be like other serialized crime shows of the time by solving the murder of Laura Palmer, dooming the show and preventing David Lynch from bringing to life the vision he had for TP. Luckily things have changed and we were allowed to have Mr. Robot as it was intended to be. My, what a ride it has been.

Mr Robot music gives me the creeps, no other TV show and very few movies touched me so deeply. Watching Me Robot was like being carried away into another dimension. I am so sad, yet so glad, that the series ended. The ending was as colossal as the entire series.

If you *really* want to get carried into another dimension (more specifically, a hypnotizing, fucked up dimension), check out Nicolas Winding Refn's show "Too Old to Die Young" on Amazon Prime. The second episode is slow af, but the rest is hard to take your eyes off of.

Seriously, thank you for putting it into words and I've been feeling for the last 6 yrs now about television and films. Honestly I've been doing it without even realizing consciously, that it what drives me to watch more and more tv, while watching films very much less than 10 yrs ago. Couldn't agree more about Mr. Robot.. It's a pure cinematic feast for the eyes, mind and soul!!

Season 4 could be the best season in television. I feel sad knowing there isnt and probably in long time wont come anything similar/like Mr.Robot. But also happy that i was a part of it, and that i waited a year or so for each season, that made is so much more special, i think. Great video, pointing how creative show was, those two episodes, 405 and 407 are one of the best tv show episodes i ever saw, also finale 413 , and 404, which bunch of people talked shit about it, it was hauntingly beautiful. Really looking forward to see more from Sam Esmail.

Yeah this ending season really blew my socks off. The only other current show I can think of that makes these kind of risky but incredible artistic choices that mr robot makes would have to be legion. Legion, while the world is very different to mr robot was fantastic to watch.

Thank you for making this video. I don't watch a lot of movies or TV shows, but I stumbled upon Mr. Robot three years ago before S2 started, and I've been hooked, it's my favorite ever, probably. Back then I still hadn't really started to watch media trying to understand what I liked about it, both visually and on a story level, and I think this show is what made me understand how much you can say when you have a vision and something you want to say, and know how to say it. I have watched it 5 times, watched it with my brother to share such a masterpiece with someone who I know would appreciate it the way it's meant to be appreciated, and it brings me so much joy both to have a show that means so much to me, and seeing people who also feel the same way that I do.

GREAT thesis. I have to say, I agree with you. Sad that mainstream movies aren't as bold and creative as they used to be, but at the same time, it's great to live in the golden age of television. Series like Mr. Robot are absolutely incredible. The same elements of a great movie can be found there, and then some. I sincerely hope that great, fresh, new movies that are being shown in theaters aren't becoming a rarity, but will be the great form of art it used to be, and can be, for mainstream viewers. People will get bored of them eventually, I hope, and then it is time for the creative minds to show their talent once again for not only film lovers, but the general public as well.

Excellent piece. Mr. Robot is my absolute favorite show, and for all the reasons you described. It's not like all the other cookie-cutter bullshit in film these days. It's something that you become a part of, something that encourages the fanbase to work together to figure out the puzzles. It's absolutely amazing.

Well said my friend, this is why, it was hard but I waited for the last season of The Leftovers and Mr. Robot to air & then watch them at one time. These two writers of said shows in my opinion are just starting to show the capacity of what to expect from generation X.

Crazy how Esmail had 46 episodes of Mr Robot planned out into such a taut thriller where there was nary a second of screen time wasted and yet Disney couldn't figure out how to make 6 hours of Star Wars have anything resembling a cohesive story and had to soft retcon and plot hole the three movies in the sequel trilogy together.

No one will ever call Buffy great cinema, but they did the silent episode first. And were nominated for an Emmy for that episode.

I don't usually write comments on YT videos but I have to say I am deepy touched by this video as well as Mr Robot as a whole.At first couple of years ago when I started watching this show (I started watching it as it premiered) I just thought hey why not, I was filling some gaps I had because of couple of shows I watched were on the brake and I thought the show would be ultimately cheap and kinda boring, like it would try so hard to be interesting. Instead what we got was mind-blowingly brilliant gem of a show that really takes care of characters, their progression and is really not only really good in execution (Like you mentioned with the whole one take, silent episodes, etc) but also every plot point leads to something bigger and really unexpected. I really think the show is kinda sleeper hit and that in 5-10 years this show will be seen as classic masterpiece, people will talk about it like they do now about Breaking Bad and some others. There is rarely a bad episode on this show if any honestly.

You just got a subscriber. Excellent editing and well written narrative, Sir! I didn't even notice the bookending in that episode when I watched it a few weeks ago. Epic fail on my part... The other TV show that to me seemed almost cinematic in it's nature and had a short three season run, was AMC's "The Killing". Every episode was intense and moved the plot forward. The last season, through Netflix, was a little bit of a change, but season 2 was some of the best television I have seen, before Me. Robot, of course.
