When folding the roof back unclip and open it slightly then press down gently on the rear glass then the top should fold down easily. Temperature makes a big difference - the vinyl is much more flexible on a warm sunny day.
Pressing the rear screen down makes a big difference. You can see in the video the glass getting jammed. I'm surprised it hasn't broken yet with all the force.
The roof on the MR2 MK 3 is the fastest manual roof you could ever wish, lean behind and pull the catch, reach over your right shoulder for the corner of the roof and lift. Up, over and closed in seconds. We tour all over Europe in our '2' I have created a luggage system for mine that allows us to carry enough stuff for three weeks without any problem. I took the car to the MR2 National Day last year on the way to a road trip around wales and people were asking about the luggage all day. Toying with a car like this, really like the idea of a 90s Elan but finding a suitable one is tricky. This might fit the bill, thanks for showing the storage space in more detail as this is the old hold up for me.
It's a very underrated car. I'm a self confessed MX5 fanboy but this little Toyota does impress. Add the fact it's a Toyota, so its well built and everything works, it's got to be worth a look 👍 The Elan does sound like a good shout too though 👌

You need to adjust the height of your roll bar. It's getting in the way of the cars top. That's why you're having trouble with the top. Going up or down.
Nice video, you should try to clean the Mass Airflow Sensor. It made a big difference on how my 2003, 6 speed manual reacted afterwards. Easy 10 minutes job, I would use CRC MAF sensor cleaner, that stuff does a great job and it is safe to use on the sensor wire's. You can find video's on you tube showing how simple it is.
Go for a 2002 or later car, so after the facelift, and you'll be fine 👍 It's the PFL cars which have the engine issues. The pre-cats disintegrate and end up being sucked into and damaging the engine. Biggest issue with these cars is rust.
I recently installed a canvas roof on mines in the spring and I can put the roof up or down from sitting in the car with hand. Got it on Amazon for around 500 bucks took me 2 days to install though.
Fair play, sounds like a good result 👍 Currently getting quotes. The roof doesn't leak, just looks bad and feels very stiff. It's on the to-do list, just not at the top right now.
I've still got the original factory roof (protected by a hard top out of season) and mine goes up and down as easy as yours. Something amiss with @Mid Life Motors one me thinks!
@@SixtyTwoEleven Oh our roof is done for sure. It's got patches in it and seems to have been over-painted at some stage??!! My technique is a bit better now thanks to some good advice from fellow owners but it'll be getting replaced, it's not good.
Roof up and down important to have doors open or at least windows slightly lowered. Keep up the great videos. Saw another and you said painting on the car £1k. That's super cheap or did you do yourself and that was material cost. I had quote to spray my rear bumper as clear coat pealing wanted £800.
£1k was to repaint the 2 sides and the bonnet. We did do a fair bit of prep work but the bodyshop finished that and did the painting. We ummed and ahhed about getting the front bumper done but they wanted £600 for that alone. Think it's the costs of removing the bumpers that "bumps" up the price. Might be worth asking if the price is lower if you just bring the panel. Rear bumpers are simple to remove, just a bit time consuming and therefore costly for a bodyshop.
@@midlifemotors5050 still yours seems a really excellent price and finish looks very smart. Yes the fella did say that they had to strip bumper off the car then sand back prime, colour then clear coat. Before reassemble. And from the way he was talking it was around £600 to £800 a panel. My rear bumper like others have seen clear coat is pealing. Rest of the car still amazing. Wasn't sure down to heat from exhaust or as the panel is plastic. But I must get it done. What's your opinion on getting an MR2 instead of an NB MX-5? I've always wanted an NB but the prices are simply too high in Belgium. I'm not paying €10 000 (£8700) for an old rusty mazda. I always considered the MR2 a better car anyway so should I go for it?
Personally I’d go mr2 over an nb all day long. Looks way better, more ooomph and less issues. Just check rear subframe for rust and go facelifted model, 2003 onwards,so no precat issues. J-Spec stock any parts you may need. Great car, still under appreciated, but that won’t last forever.
That roof doesn't look too good. On mine I can undo the clips then give the roof a gentle push back whilst still sitting down and it folds down and clips into place all by itself. No problems pulling up also whilst still sitting down. Have you checked the straps that keep the roof neat and ears in? Maybe they're too tight or have become tangled?

nooo dont do the roof like that...dont squize it in... just gently push the glass down and it will suck and pull all the fabric over it and the roof will go in properly...you are possibly damaging it the way you are pushing it down with all your weight, try the glass thing better

Went for Toyo Proxes in the end. Not the grippiest ever but very consistent, wearing well and giving a very nice ride. Well priced too. Hope that helps 👍
Are you able to drive on the track with this roll bar? Also is it safe ? I want to go on a track day with my MR2, so I'm looking to buy a roll bar, I found one on eBay that looks just like yours
Personnally I'd go MX5 because I prefer a car with a pointy front end that turns in sharp. The Mazda does that better than the Toyota. But that's just my driving style. If you prefer a more stable rear then you'd go MR2. You??
@@midlifemotors5050 didn't push hard mr2. But had before mx5 nb 1.6 and love it. Now my choice is between mx5 nb 1.8 vvt with ohlins suspension, roll and exhaust and Mrs in mint condition with suspension kit and trd bracers all around and trd body kit. 1zz 6 Mt... It's tough decision
