One night in October of 2001, a young woman named Amy, and her friend whose name was Eric, were at a dance club in Portland, Maine. Amy was having fun, but Eric wasn't. He seemed bored and maybe a little annoyed. Amy tried to convince him to come out onto the dance floor to dance with her, but Eric wasn't interested. So, Amy wandered off to the dance floor alone. Eric watched her for a moment, then left for the bathroom. However, when he came back, Amy was gone. And 72 hours later, just about everyone in the state of Maine was asking the same question... where did Amy go? #mrballen #mrballenpodcast #truecrime #history

I went to the Amy St. Laurent site...and it talks about amy having good instincts...um, no she did not. She did not. She absolutely DID not. And how it was out of character for her to leave the club with two men she didn't know. how often did her family go clubbing with her? I have done plenty of things in my youth my parents would say were "out of character" not knowing that it probably was well within my character at the time. They offer self defense for women but I i don't see anything about decision making on the site. And before someone says "YOU are victim blaming" If you read what the story ... they seem to blame ERIC for it in a way. Shit, he didnt do it. Makes me wonder if this murder he didn't commit has messed him up too. you would come away from that site maybe still thinking it was the angry dude she invited "innocently" from Florida who did it. So.. yeah... it is great their foundation offers self defense courses. But also it would be great to let young girls know how to make better decisions so they don't have to fight for their lives.

Seriously? What exactly are we going to teach these women? That all men are brutal murderers if you deny them sex? That unlike men, you can't trust a man to give you a ride? That if you go back to their place for a party, you risk rape and death? Please. Just stop. All men are not killers. SMH.

yup, thought the same thing. And when I heard she abandoned Eric at the club, of course I thought "HE DID IT!" I was wrong. but hey, you invited this guy over and luckily he didn't chop her up. yes he got mad that she didn't want to have sex..but sounds like signals got mixed, he got mad but he STILL didn't kill her. And damn, if a friend invited me to a club, a female friend at that, and then left to go hang out with two other females while I was in the bathroom. I'd be VERY mad , and at that age I probably would have keyed her damn car, thrown her jacket out the window and left her purse out on the street. ( I wouldn't do that now but as a 20 something I did key an ex's car once when he dumped,. so I know I would have done it.) Eric didn't do any of that. That is some s***ty behavior on Amy's part. And yes, yes, yes, it did lead her to Russ. Amy's decision to just abandon the person SHE invited led to her meeting a murderer. Did she deserve it? Of course not. Russ is 100% to blame for her death. but could this have been prevented if Amy had just acted DECENT to someone she invited over? YES. 100% this would have been prevented. . Had she just been a good host even if she didn't like Eric sexually, just be a good friend while hosting... she wouldn't have met Russ and she would be alive today.

While this certainly is a tragedy, and as woman we should definitely be able to **count on the men in our lives** and have comfort in knowing they won't harm us or put us in danger, one would be remiss to ignore all the things that led up to this event. She counted on a random dude to get her home safely-a dude she'd met twice in a bar, while intoxicated on a date with another dude, a dude who she'd invited to travel half the country to sleep at her house platonically despite knowing he had romantic feelings for her, while the ex-boyfriend she'd ditched bc he was too dull kept guard from the living room. She only actually knew 2 of these men enough to trust them. Pointing out her obvious faults is not "victim blaming" - it's acknowledging the reality that she made bad choice after bad choice after bad choice and expected nothing bad to ever happen to her!

@@littlewillowlinda I know she did. And it's a crying shame that what was meant as a kind act. And one that you are sacrificing the benefit of yourself over. Is used against you in the most brutal ultimate betrayal. And we know statistically that most murders. I think 9 out of 10 are committed by someone we know in one capacity or another. However vague or distant it is. And I put ex boyfriends in the same category. Because it's the vague and distant ones that want more than they have already got. And the sheer volume of women that get murdered by someone in that category. That was just doing them a favour is truly mind-blowing. Because if they can just get us to feel sorry for them. They know they have a chance. And that's because we really really must like them!! And we are playing hard to get! By the time they finally get the message. The poor girl is already dead. Men like that are made up of a lethal mix of testosterone, ego and single figure brain cells. And she would have in his mind, got what she deserved. I was put in a situation when I was 18. And one I really really wasn't happy about. Furthermore I vocalised it loudly to the one asking. And for the one he was asking for..... and didn't know myself. And at this point I didn't know of him either. I have no other excuse for me relenting to him. Other than he wore me down. I had the presence of mind to sleep in with my son that night. As I allowed him the sofa to sleep. The bedroom was front facing others. And the windows swung out from middle hinges to open horizontally. At that position they would hold themselves there. So I put the window like that and jumped into the cabin bed I had made from a small cupboard. Obviously Id built it with his safety in mind 😂 but it was still much higher than most. And because it was, it closed the distance between me and the actual window. I was more on the level with it. And I think that's why I woke up in the middle of the night to it being softly closed. I immediately woke up and reacted badly to this. I can't remember now, it's almost 40 years ago. I do remember telling him if he didn't go right now I was going to scream my fucking head off. And our houses were made of plaster boards. And he knew it. He did go and he went without any harm done to myself and more importantly my son! It could have ended very differently. Especially when a couple of years later I would go on to become friends with his ex wife and babysit for her kids. She told me the things he had done to her. And that I had indeed had a lucky escape. Then many years after that again. And he had gone on to make 5 different families with kids by this time. And it came out that he had been sexually abusing his kids. Including the daughter of my friend. And she did come out with the others in order to have him prosecuted. And he did eventually go to prison for it as well. Thankfully he is dead now and been dead for many years. He won't be hurting anyone ever again. I mean!!! We tell our kids not to talk with strangers???😯 Then reach adulthood and become idiots!!

He's not asking you to go for a ride if he's not interested in you romanticly. Accepting his offer is inherently leading him on right from the get go and since women sometimes send mixed signals and play hard to get, you are just going to confuse the guy. It really comes down to common sense, basic social skills and an understanding of how relationshps work, which Amy lacked. The fact that she invited this random guy to stay over while her ex was also there only highlights how socially inept she was.
@anonymousdinosaur1300
@anonymousdinosaur1300 2 месяца назад
After further thought, it is actually possible that she wasn't socially inept at all and knew EXACTLY what she was doing. It's possible that she enjoyed the attention and the scenario of two men simultaneously pursuing her and potentially fighting over her. She might have claimed she wasn't interested but actions often speak louder than words. The fact that she went out with Eric to a bar and then basically left him standing there by himself to play pool with two random 20 something year old men says a lot about her personality.

@@Dale-jd4nj I’m a woman with Asperger’s and I was in my 40s before it finally dawned on me that I didn’t like back in a boy way when I was a teen were possibly it that I was a tease or stringing them along when I just didn’t want to be seen by them after I told them I wasn’t allowed to have a boyfriend (early adolescence) or that I had a boyfriend already once I got one. People girls I can say women my age 49 we got mixed signals from social cues of being a nice girl don’t be the B word and so I probably accidentally seemed like I was sending mixed messages by trying to be a friend of somebody that probably just wanted me to look at his wiener. More than looking at it you know you know. And I didn’t know that if somebody still asked for a hug after I said, I couldn’t have a boyfriend or after I had a boyfriend and I gave him a hug. I didn’t think about it as rubbing my boobs all over them, but realizing it as a kind of epiphany later on even though I reached to Daughter and I did raise her be kind but you don’t have to be nice if someone’s not being nice to you always treat people with kindness don’t accept meanness from anyone and continue to be kind. Tell them they blew it. I still have trouble reading social cues, but I never was this level of reckless. Well, once I was visiting a friend from summer camp when we were 15 and I wasn’t used to the really high heels of Pittsburgh because I lived in another state that was flat. We were walking back from the Salvation Army and I couldn’t walk another step and I kind of jokingly Stuck out my thumb to hitchhike a pick up truck passed us by. And we did do that, but it was in the pick up part and it was daytime in the city in a busy part of the city and we were kind of punks when the Pittsburgh police were pulling up next to us, I said, get out at the red light and we booked it.

I did the same! Growing up in the 60s and 70s in a small town, my family, neighbors and all my friends were so normal, it never occurred to me that some people and even strangers could be evil, so I tended to be trusting, even later when I moved to a large city. I used to hang out with guys a lot and some of them I let "crash at my pad" if they were too stoned to get back home. Nothing bad happened. Many years later, I realize what a risk taker I was and how lucky I was to eventually end up with a great career, two children and two grandchildren I adore!

Although Amy was pretty naive and made bad choices she didn’t deserve to fall prey to a sadistic male who couldn’t take a female rejecting him. It’s easy to tell women to be careful and never go off alone with strangers as it should be common sense but it’s disturbing how there are so many men who resort to violence when a woman rejects their advances. They feel entitled to women and feel those women should be happy they find them attractive. That kind of toxic male thought process is so scary for women just trying to live their lives and is why some women play along when guys hit on them in fear that something like this could happen 😢

This is why I always worry when my very attractive girlfriend goes out sometimes. Now Im not a controlling person and I understand that we dont always have to go out together, sometimes we do need a break from one another for the relationship to run smoothly, but at the same time I still do worry about her because she draws alot of attention to herself, not only with her looks but because she has a very likeable personality, easy to talk to and people seem drawn to her. So contrary to what she thinks, its not jealousy as much as its her safety that im concerned about because u never really know what type of person u might meet… matter of fact I still remember the time she called me desperatly asking me to pick her up after a guy started really scaring her trying to pull a move on her saying he was beginning to get aggressive! I happened to be nearby purely out of luck it seems cuz I actually had no idea where she was and picked her up just minutes later. She told him she had to go to the bathroom then ran out to my car! It still scares me to this day wondering what could have happened if I was any further away especially considering I was only even in that part of town because I was dropping off a friend. If not for that id be atleast a half our away…

But yeah I still remember how shaken up she was when she got into my car. I’ve known her for 8 years now and ive never seen that look on her face before… I was genuinely concerned but knowing her I didnt say anything At that moment… later when she seemed to start being more like herself again I tried to ask more but knowing me she didnt wanna tell me anything out of fear of what I might do… despite my reassurances I never did find out who this guy was… and despite that experience really shaking her up, it didnt take very long for her to start hanging out with random people again… which I assume includes guys I mean honestly if I guy wouldnt try to hit on her I would find it weird… But yeh like I said earlier for the most part I dont mind her hanging out with other guys, long as she knows them and u know their her friends. Its the random ones that worry me really. I know she turns em all down, thats not the issue. I just know there are guys like that Rus guy out there that just cant take no for an answer

Thats the thing though with having an attractive girl. You gotta get used to other guys hitting on her. If shes really gorgeous Its gonna happen. Ummm... Is anyone remembering that it WASN'T ERIC that KILLED her? 🤔 It was RUSS, the local guy. Not that I don't agree with everybody that her decision making with ALL the men involved at the time was pretty "off". I think she was probably just a normal self absorbed attractive young lady that was relatively inexperienced with GROWN men and was likely used to dealing with "BOYS" vs Men, so she was used to being able to get away with carelessly disregarding young men's intentions or the lengths they're capable of going to for them. Cuz it was either her being naive or at worst being manipulative in order to boost her own ego and get attention (though I doubt that's the reason). Regardless of which one was the reason and regardless of which man killed her for it, she still didn't deserve to die because of it. And to be realistic, a man that's mentally unstable enough to have gone to the point of killing a woman for saying no, was obviously ALREADY a loose cannon waiting to go off on ANY woman at some point. Eric and the ex did what a "Normal" guy is supposed to do (get mad yeah, of COURSE, but then walk AWAY), NOT KILL them for it. So clearly Russ was a whack job to begin with. 🤨🙄 (SMH) 😞 *On a side note* It IS tempting to victim blame when we see such obviously poor decisions being made and then costing them the ultimate price, so I understand people's reactions, but if it was OUR daughters or sisters, I'm sure we wouldn't appreciate all of this finger pointing.

I doubt the investigation happened this way. The cops had the rental car’s tracking data, probably from the very start, to compare with everyone’s accounts as to Amy’s path and timing. Certain not also to compare against the location of Amy’s body in a location Russ was more likely to know than Eric, who would also have to get there in a newly acquired car. The confession likely just closed their case against their only suspect. I would have needed more information to rule out the ex as well.
