Thank you SO MUCH Sarah for conducting this research!!! It will be so helpful in explaining how the arching of the tongue facilitates changes in register on brass instruments. I studied with Claude Gordon for many years, and he was involved in several fluoroscopic X-Ray studies of trumpet players, one conducted by John Haynie in the 1960's and one conducted in the early 1980's by Claude himself along with Dr. Larry Miller, a physician and trumpet player. The actual films and videos of those early studies are not available anywhere, but as Claude and others have described to me, what they showed is exactly what your study shows. And yours has the benefit of a modern MRI machine and wonderful picture quality. Lastly, your "hose-horn" reminds me of several similar horns a friend and I made using old truck (LKW) horns from a junkyard and similar clear plastic tubing. I still have mine, forty years later. :-) Best wishes, John Mohan, trumpet in the Pit Orchestra for "Der Glöckner von Notre Dame" at the Potsdamer Platz Theater, from 2000-2002, right down the street from your Orchestra Hall. :-)

Although this study is a few years old. Just to be sure: The brighter white parts of your body, where you are tonguing...are these your lips or your teeth? So do you articulate between your lips or between your teeth? Greetings!

Fascinating that as she ascends, or even starts high, the entire tongue is high in the roof of the mouth, as if little air gets through, and is lower with the mouth cavity more open in the lower range. Is this something she (you?) consciously does or does it just happen? It doesn't happen with me

I'm guessing you'd see the same thing with any expert horn player. (Though I don't know if anyone can double-tongue as fast as she does!) The length of the tube would dictate the range of frequency but the chamber would likely be adjusted similarly to manipulate the pitch to align with the keys - if there are any, that is. Bugles don't have keys, right?
