Paul Offit is the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Vaccinology and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. Offit has published more than 170 papers in medical and scientific journals in the areas of rotavirus-specific immune responses and vaccine safety. He is also the co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, recommended for universal use in infants by the CDC and WHO.

@@stevebryan2446 when do you think not vaccinating is a shady decision ? Do you think the misinformed will stop misinforming if there will be no mandates ? What motivates misinformers is greed( eg Bret Weinstein , Campbell ) and other needs for example popularity ( even if it’s among the dumbest - eg Malone ) . Without mandates there will be much more lives lost . Every single story has shown that when ever administrators stood up for the vulnerable and mandated flu shots for healthcare workers the flu related hospital acquired flu infection mortality decreased . So you are completely Wrong when you say they did not make a difference . The real reason for reduction in trust in science is lack of critical thinking and inability and laziness to look things up .

I caught COVID in late Feb 2020 and for me it was a seasonal flu. Through 2020 I was the safest person you could have near you because I had known acquired immunity. And yet I was treated like a leper, told I couldn't go in public, and insulted as murderer and granny killer. When the jab came out, thanks to my immunity I adopted the SKEPTIC position of "wait and see". Every single person I know who got it was ill for 2 to 4 days after each shot. I had been sick with covid 4 days total. At least half of them developed long lasting side effects, some severe. Every single one of them eventually caught symptomatic COVID and were ill for at least a week each time. Therefore after seeing that, I made the informed decision of not getting jabbed. My body, my choice. No one should ever have dared meddled with my decision. No one should dare to accuse me of being ignorant, or stupid, or uneducated, or an extremist. Make your own decision and leave other people alone.

Ya my aunt had a blood clot two days after, the doc said it's not from the vax. My runner friend in peak physical health got pericarditis the first two doc's said not from the vax, this doc confirmed and gave him an exemption from boosters, severely injured could not even put up his Christmas tree. My dad's heart stopped two weeks post jab. My best friends dad died suddenly in his sleep. My cousin has mild heart pain. I had mild heart pain. My other cousin like dr. Campbell got hypertension. One of my clients got a stroke post Pfizer booster. Two of my clients partners have heart issues. One of my clients has severe allergies that she needs a monthly shot for life to contain. Another client in his thirty has heart inflammation. The list goes on and on

I appreciate what you do Michael. However, I was disappointed with your questioning. Why not press harder on his Covid origins explanation? Mr Offit made the claim that Ridley and Chen's argument rested on the furin cleavage site, I belive that to be a mischaracterization. Additionally, you asked a great question about the effects of lockdown and Offit basically responded with, oh well. Why not press a little harder?

Sweden did *not* do much worse than other Scandinavian countries as shown by excess deaths where Sweden has been the lowest in Europe and slightly lower than Finland and Norway.

@@heynow01 Countries with the lowest vax rates tend to be the poorest and have the youngest population. The two countries that had no vaccination and Eritrea both run by repressive dictators and whose health data is highly suspect. The only way to see if the vaccines have worked is to look at the age related all causemortality rates for vaccinated and un-vaccinated . Which shows the death rate is higher in unvaxxed.. You can see the graphs on the Our World in Data web site and Office for National Statistics

Also if you look at the dat when Japan stop vaccinating and sent their citizens horse past in human dosage and their numbers of infection dropped and south Korea had the spikes that Japan didn't see during omicron.

Nih study like cbd lowers cases in many respiratory virus. Or nih website that pcr tests were inaccurate while that's all they were using.

This podcast is called "Skeptic." There was very little skepticism here. Sadly, that's too often the case when Shermer interviews someone whom Shermer believes to be in possession of "the truth." Michael, no matter how certain you are of any "fact", if there is a contingent or reasonably well-informed human beings who dispute or just question that "fact", then you will do all of us a favor by presenting that position. Then, feel free, to tear into them. Since you clearly weren't motivated to do that here, you should have invited someone on who was.

Even when facts are as crystal clear as presented . Today when it comes to those issues the problem is not enough skepticism it’s the lack of acceptance of facts, conspiracy theories and purposeful denial of facts . People have gone many steps further from asking question ( asking questions of what all scientists do as the purpose is to find answers ). Once the vaccine became readily available in the county where I live, our coroner told me they have had a 25% increase in their caseload. We both agreed that if it isn’t the vaccine that is causing the increase, what is causing it?

The infection rate increased over time. How long was the period over which your coroner noted a 25% increase? This could not have been an increase in infections for the population that was vaccinated since none of the people had been vaccinated before the vaccine was available. Without the necessary data, his estimate means nothing.

You might actually agree with some of his opinions. He says that he doesn't believe that boosters are needed for adults under 75, unless you have some other underlying conditions. That seems pretty reasonable.

I randomly jumped in and heard Offit say MERS spread around the world and caused thousands of cases and thousands of deaths. The reality is that MERS was almost entirely in Saudi Arabia. There were 2,600 cases worldwide and caused 939 deaths, almost all in Saudi Arabia

Real question here. Was the link between smoking and lung cancer really that hard to detect? I thought the tobacco companies simply created so much "scientific" evidence to drag out the debate, but an honest inquiry would NOT have required decades of "confusion". Therefore, Shermer's invoking this example would actually support the concern people have of dishonest evidence being accepted as a reason to push a bad set of policies into the future long enough to support the interests of those groups that gain a profit or power advantage from it. Then, like the tobacco conspiracy (I believe that is what it was) they can console their subconscious and rebut the public's accusations with a contrived version of "we really didn't know", the evidence was conflicting.

i am confused, but is he asserting the vaccine provides you with immunity? immunity from what? how is that assertion consistent with breakthrough cases. i also think that this dr’s statements here are very high level regarding the risks presented by covid, which my understanding are not equal across all members of society but influenced by age, weight, and other factors. probably why i should read the book before reaching conclusions.

People can still receive the vaccine for the measles and still can get the measles. Although the chances are very low. There are serveral reasons for this if you want me to explain. Take for instance influenza there's a vaccine every 12 months or so because of the mutation of the virus...

Since myocarditis is 8 to 14 times more common with Covid than with vaccine and frequently much more severe and you admit it’s not good for you. So any body afraid of myocarditis but with brain cells should rush to get vaccine . Also there are multiple other benefits of vaccine . Question - would you be an antivaxer if you could think critically since you actually did prove that you can’t .

I was so proud of my father who got seatbelts in 1956! He protected us! Though it was not typical to do that, he realized that cars were dangerous! My brother still hates him because he was so difficult for us but he protected us despite his having Clinical Depression. I had to learn to be responsible about other things, as did my brother who dealt with more than I did. That man limited my life unnaturally, but he may have saved me too! I'm inclined to agree what Wakefield discovered should have been the prompt to do more testing to find the cause of the dramatic coincidence of cases of autism only in areas injecting babies with the MMR vaccine. Instead, a smear campaign was launched against him for reporting what was very concerning, but would have shut down the new product and cost the company millions. And then they justified not pulling the product because children would die and a epidemic would start. Used ivermectin for the last variant I got in September 2023, cleared it quickly and helped to eliminate other symptoms I’d had from my first case of COVID in 2020. Sadly they suppressed early treatment options of repurposed drugs in order to get a vaccine fast-tracked under emergency use authorization. Clinical evidence from doctors who didn’t hide-out and decided to treat the sick apparently carried no weight. Very sad - so much senseless death, grief and suffering. Perfect opportunity to talk about health, but no - go home, do nothing and come back when your lips are blue and you can’t breathe. They are in serious denial.

Regarding Michael Shermer's support of the unwillingness Dr. Peter Hotez, Offit to engage in debate, I am a bit dissapointed. Yes, there are some individuals who are so factually off and rigid (like holocaust deniers) that debating them may be a poor investment of one's time. But, history is filled with examples of accepted truth of the day proven to be wrong. And during the pandemic we saw a general unwillingness of institutional leaders (like Fauci) and their supporters to debate scientific dissenters whose points proved to be valid. So, as a general rule, one should not be so confident of their beliefs / so dismissive of the beliefs of others that they are unwilling to subject it to the scrutiny of other individuals in the marketplace of ideas.

The idea may not be clear: thoughts are the product of the thinking process carried out by the human self using the human brain, so what is the value of an irrational thief who steals the product of another person’s thinking process?! This means that he has no value at all, but what is really more strange is how they lost all human characteristics?! They cannot feel ashamed, like humans, of committing crimes against their miserable selves! It is clear that the environment in which they live has a major role and how they attract the other irrationals. They share something in common that attracts them to each other (something ugly and irrational).

@@slickdarulah8229unvaxed have 2-3 x still birth rate and 2-3 x pre mature delivery rate . Over 1700 children passed from Covid and over 10 k admitted to icu . We care about children that’s why we vaccinate . Why do you not like children ?

What do you say Dr. Shermer when someone questions your motives? You seem to always question the motives of anyone you don't agree with but I'm sure you are not the only person who only speaks the truth according to your research. Present your argument, present your data, let the other person present their argument and data, and then let the listeners decide who they believe. Science changes as we learn more so being right today doesn't mean you are right tomorrow. and doesn't mean you should vilify your opponent or question their motives.
