This E3D tool-changing and motion system is a very colorful sight to see for sure you can see that there is a nice built-in nozzle cleaning brush that allows this machine to smoothly and efficiently in a multi-color fashion. Honestly all the multi color printing is a very nice sight.
Welcome to MRRF 2018 where you will find more printers than you can imagine. Santi discuses with people around the festival on the subject of 3D Printing with an interesting and inspiring group of individuals. There were many neat people and organizations at Midwest Reprap Festival such as Matterhackers with Joes 3d Printing Nerd, E3d with there new hotend tool changing 3d printer, Bondtech with their new 3d printer extruders, seemecnc with their giant delta 3d printer, Tom Saladerer, OpenRC with their 3d printed rc cars, a glitter 3d printer

When i had recived my cheapo 3D china clone printer...yhis multi changing toolhead was one of my first ideas i thought of...by my idea parked the toolhead on the side of the zaxis...this is super nice...i need this and marlin code setup...a must upgrade for my printer...swear

I don't think a 3d printer frame can handle the XY resistances a CNC mill needs.

They said it will be open sourced. They also said it's not a printer, it's a reference platform. You buy the basic kit and add your own choice of electronics and other things.
@digibluh

they will sell just the kinematics and head too, so you can just build your own/add to your existing core XY setup.

The tool changes are very sleek, good job on that. But the transition phases are taking forever and don't seem very clean either, on top of that the print quality is very poor (I imagine a lot of that comes from the tool heads no seating perfectly).

Universal dove tail 3D Printers tool change adapter, manual. www.cgtrader.com/.../universal-dove-tail-3d...Advantages? Yes: one can change various printing heads, manually, on printers that were never made to accomplish this. Unlike the versions you can buy ready made, this is more compact, easy to install on a vast range of models with minimum tweakening, and you print it yourself mirrored or straight as needed. It has (Tada....) a Z axis sensor slider support adjustable as needed to the micron height by twisting a screw... Bye bye sensor adjusting headache.

To be honest, this is cool indeed, but nothing about any technique revolution, just combine the multiple tool switch process with 3D printer.

for all the talk up of quality and precision in the previous video the print quality looks very low.... I would expect much higher quality of print considering the cost, this looks little better than a $300 printer does, sure multiple colours but hardly worth the effort/cost considering the print quality. Seems like a bit of a fail to me.

The kinematic linkages on this one are handmade so expect much better precision in the machined ones.
@digibluh
@digibluh 6 лет назад
it's not even that.... look at the belt pattern/banding on the surface. like the print at 2:04... needs some tweaking elsewhere...probably needs toothed pulleys or flipped belts but those other prints look decent on the table. at least.
@mhe0815
@mhe0815 6 лет назад
Hard to tell from the freeze frame but I'd say that this is a case of the infill structure showing through on the surface. The pattern is the same distance as in the transparent identical part where you can see the infill shine through a bit. Once the testers who threw money at this already (I did) get their hands on it, we will make sure to report back of course.

Other than the tool pick up system everything was pretty much off the shelf items so no excuse for "hand made". This looks like a 1.8Degree stepper motors on 20+ teeth gears with single sheer pulley configuration on belts that are too long showing through to me. This is clearly visible with layer lines they do not align well on top of each other and the other artefacts/waves running through the print that we know are not caused by the duet's drivers. There is clearly more than enough shells/walls there to ensure there is no infill artefacts showing through so you can't blame that, more importantly they are consistently through the print not just at the infill points. I am sure all the BS about weight saving on the main moving part probably made a 20mm/s difference at most, which is hardly worth the cost or effort, the fact they could not even give a speed it will print well at backs this fact otherwise they would be touting that as well. I stand by the statement that a cheap printer, like the $175 Ender 2, seems to be doing a better job. If you are happy to poor $1000 down the drain on something looking that bad in the "sales pitch" (and you know they would of spent a ton of hours tuning the thing) then you must be happy to waste your cash or a fanboy. This is looking like just another 3dprinter fail from E3D like the bigbox. They need to spend a little more time on some of the quality issues in their products at the moment (seized/low quality bearings, rough heat break bores, poorly cut threads etc) rather than d1cking around with half finished 3D printers that won't work out of the box........ For this kinda cash and no electronics or tools it should have 4 point Z access screws for proper auto level, 3 point linear rails to ensure fully constrained movement and the whole case should be carbon fibre with the ability to close in the entire build space in to hold the temperature constant inside. I think it is obvious they are a little lost when they are talking about "production parts manufacturing" on the unit, all the gear an no idea by the looks of it......

The nozzle being 2.0mm would have to use 3mm filament on the same machine that you would be using 1.75mm filament on. Anything more than 1.2mm is more than enough requiring a volcano hotend to get decent performance and consistent melting temperatures. Changing nozzle size while printing and also multi materials in a single part might be the next step in FDM printing where one can include TPU, Nylon, and PLA all in the same part. So combining nozzle switching with filament material switching in the same print for a fully customized part will be the future, until we can start printing metal parts. None of this matters if they cant get the precision better than whats shown in the video there is clearly some problems in the prints. The wire brush solution is the most cheapest and horrible nozzle cleaning idea i have seen. When they said there is only 1 Z axis lead screw i am extremely skeptical that there is precision or stiffness in the frame design.
