This short tutorial looks at helping you perfect your landings in the A320N in MSFS2020. We look at setting up your controls & going over the final few hundred feet to get that perfect touchdown every pilot craves. Every landing is different & MSFS doesn't always make it as easy as it should be, but hopefully this will help you get the landings you're after.
To check out other examples of landing the A320 in MSFS, please see the ends of the following videos:-

Not bad at all. Correct landing technique lead to a safe landing. I’m assuming the very slight float was due to limitations of the sim control equipment, but even some days on the line it happens to the best of us. You probably already know this, but I find the best way to judge the flare is, at 50ft RA, look towards the horizon (or end of the runway if it’s obscured), then between 30-20ft input sufficient backstick to stop the horizon moving upwards, then hold the attitude. I suspect that’s what you did anyway, but just confirming. Thought you might be interested to know what a real life easyJet pilot had to say about it. All the best.
@Easyjetsimpilot
@Easyjetsimpilot 3 года назад
Always love to have real pilots' input (& a bonus if Easyjet 😜). The biggest limitations in the sim is you have no spacial awareness on a 2D screen & very difficult to judge. The sim at the moment does over emphasise the ground effect, so I'm hoping that gets sorted soon. Love the horizon tip so thank you for that! I'm presuming like my Ej friends, you're not really busy at the moment. If not, pop in on our live streams - there are always lots of people wanting to ask questions of a real A320 pilot. Thank you.

Really nicely explained again Gavin, I like the explanation about the nose down input at 50’. The A/C memorises your current pitch attitude and introduces a nose down input to encourage the pilot to flare naturally. We don’t even notice this on the A/C. It just does it and it just works. We have two stability gates at eJ. One at 1000’ AAL and one at 500’ AAL. I can go into more detail at what these are if anyone wants to know. You say you want to land with wings level. This is correct but when you have a crosswind, the crosswind technique may require you to land with some into wind bank angle. I.e. if you have a wind from the left, you’ll decrab with right rudder to align with the runway centreline in the flare. But the wind will start pushing you downwind to the right so some left aileron may be required to stop you drifting off the runway. This means you might be in a slight left bank and allow the left main wheel to touch down first. It’s a coordinated manoeuvre that’s not always easy. Max bank angle allowed during landing is 7° IIRC. Landing a sim must be quite hard as you won’t have the seat of the pants sensation and feedback you get from the real A/C. You instinctively put some control inputs because you can feel the aircraft sink or climb etc. To nail landing in the touchdown zone keep your aim point (Big white markers) fixed in your window. This should minimise the A/C going too high or low. If the aim point starts moving down in your windscreen, you’re going to land long and deep. So correct and pitch down a tad. Conversely if it starts moving up, you’re landing short so pitch up to correct. You want that aim point fixed in the windscreen and not moving. The aim point needs to be about 1/4 - 1/3rd of the way up the windscreen roughly. Once your aim point is fixed, don’t chase it. When you get below about 300-200’ accept what you have and make very small adjustments. The PAPIs and G/S are very sensitive close in. There are often a lot of many small control inputs in the flare. And these adjustments can vary depending on the conditions. For example the flare height, or initiation of the flare with regards to control inputs differ with a tailwind or a headwind. If we’re landing with a tailwind, the flare might be started at 30’. But with a strong headwind, a much smaller control input will be required and the flare might be as late as 10’. The same goes with reducing the thrust. I’ll probably reduce the thrust to idle later with a decent headwind, than what I do with a bit of a tailwind. This all comes with experience and every landing is probably slightly different as you feel what the A/C is doing.
@Easyjetsimpilot
@Easyjetsimpilot 3 года назад
Thank you very much for the added information. I'm sure many people (myself included) find it really helpful to hear. You're certainly right about not having the 'full' picture as you try to land a sim on a desktop PC. You don't have the full field of view and sensation as you would in the real aircraft to help you make all those decisions.
@VmcgHD
@VmcgHD 3 года назад
@@Easyjetsimpilot Yeah that’s exactly it. There are far more stimulus in the real A/C. So it’s arguably easier! 🤣 So don’t be too disheartened if you miss-time a landing every now and again. We all do it! I’ve had a play with Sim Brief too and managed to get it to produce flight plans with correct contingency (5%) / final reserve (30 mins) fuel to give you more realistic OFPs. You can also add additional alternates. We’ll always have three or four options available to us and add fuel accordingly. For example we did have fuel planned for Stansted as the alternate when you flew back to LGW. But Stansted isn’t used by eJ now so we’d add fuel to Luton instead (or wherever is appropriate). Even though STN was the primary alternate on the OFP. That will be updated and changed soon I’m sure.

@rangerrick8220
@rangerrick8220 3 года назад
So if you have a strong crosswind, you will be using rudder to crab and aileron to point... but with no crosswind, do you use solely aileron? I have a hard time getting centreline and tend to use aileron to aim in no -low wind conditions. but wondering if i am doing this wrong...
@VmcgHD
@VmcgHD 3 года назад
@@rangerrick8220 Sort of. In a crosswind you'll be using the rudder to 'point' the nose down the centre line of the runway. The aileron is then used to keep you from drifting downwind off the runway surface. So a bit of into wind aileron, and a bit of bank is sometimes needed. This all depends on how much crosswind you have. A 5 knot crosswind is barely noticeable and you won't need a lot of control input to counter it. A 38 knot crosswind is quite tough and you need a lot of control input to stay aligned with the runway. A little bit of crab angle on touchdown is acceptable but you try to minimise it. It takes practise and you may need to adjust your control sensitivity's until they're responsive enough. Having peripherals such as rudder pedals will help too.

One thing I did was get rid of all Function key (F1, F2...) mappings (mixture, flaps, etc.) and move them onto my stick and throttle buttons. Then I map the Slew keys up there on the Function keys (slew on/off, forward, backward, up, down, yaw (twist) right and left, and translate (move) right and left. Then I just set up a flight in the main MSFS screen, Arrival is any airstrip, no Departure at all, and MSFS will put me in the air pointed directly at the Arrival runway. Then I go to outside view and can see the plane pointed right at the runway. Then slew the plane backwards and then upwards. To measure how far backwards, I use LittleNavMap which shows circles of distance measured in miles, centered around the plane on a map. I use the popular memory device which flight instructors always teach to determine how far and high: height = distance x 3 ... e.g. for 5 miles distance 1500' height, 10 miles is 3000 feet... 15 miles 4500' .. 3 miles 900' Quickly set up a landing straight in, to practice any plane, any airport.

@Easyjetsimpilot
@Easyjetsimpilot 3 года назад
This is absolutely fine whilst still learning & gaining confidence. Some airline have SOPs where autopilot must be off by a certain altitude (say 1,000ft). In the A320, the autothrust will usually stay on until touchdown. The only time a pilot will leave the AP on as low as 100 feet is if they're performing a CAT II or CAT III ILS approach. 👍 safe landings!

What about the flaps? How do you tackle these since the moment you move on from the cruising attitude into your transition and the landing? Could you advise on these? It happens to me when approaching the airport that opening flaps are affecting the control of my aircraft. When moving into the number two, the plane is either massively accelerating or climbing back again which obviously ruins all adjustments made prior to the landing. Could you please perhaps consider making a video with the major focus on how to switch and control that area of your control board? Specifically, I mean the thrust and flaps. I find that there are not many films around this aspect when landing. Anyway. I really appreciate your movies. Great stuff really. Don't confuse the TDZ with the aiming point. The aiming point is the large white rectangle markers. The touch down zone then extends from here and identified by doubled then single white stripes. As long as your down in this touch down zone (as we were in this video), you're good 👍

I fly the A320/321 for Frontier. The key to good landings is speed control. At the Final Approach Fix you should be speed selected 180 knots and should have flaps 2. Crossing FAF drop gear, select speed managed and about 170 Kts select Flaps 3, at 160 kts Flaps full. You should then on a stabilized approach before 1000 Agl. Toggle off autopilot whenever you like. If not doing CAT II or III then off by 160 feet AGL The 50 feet thing is real( the computer takes a snap shot of your pitch attitude and slightly lowers nose to force instinctive pilot flare) On all our aircraft the computer makes a “retard” call out and then thrust levers to idle.

MDH (minimum decent height) is the lowest height you're allowed to decent to without seeing the runway. If you can't see the runway by this altitude, you're best off going around as you're not allowed to decend lower, which would take you off the glideslope profile. DH (decision height) is used to CATII & CATIII landings, where the autopilot will take the aircraft via the ILS down to the runway. Again, if you can't see the runway by the DH, you should go around (CATII is usually 100ft - AP then off for manual touch down | CATIII 50 feet | CATIIIb - usually no DH, so a fully automated landing where the aircraft will touch down (with flare) itself onto the runway - this IS NOT yet implemented in MSFS - yet.
@VmcgHD
@VmcgHD 3 года назад
CAT II is still an autoland. It’s just the minimum is a bit higher like easyjetsim pilot says. A DH Of no lower than 100’. Minimum RVRs need to be 300m/75m/75m for the touchdown, mid point and far end of the runway. You can disregard the far end RVR as you’re expected to be below 60knts by then. There’s also a CAT I LTS (lower than standard) too. This is also an autoland. Again minimums are slightly lower than CAT I, but higher than CAT II.
