I realize I'm 3 years late, but after 10:44, he confirmed your readback correct despite your having said "7130" instead of "7310". Thanks for the vid! Taking the plunge shortly! Super helpful!
Holy crap, I’ve wanted to learn how to participate in realistic ATC communications for so long, and you finally explained it in a way that makes sense! Thanks man, great video! You should make more ATC tutorials, like on how to properly take off and land with VFR, or how to use the aircraft computers to plan a route, or something.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm always thinking about new tutorials I could make. There's pretty much existing tutorials for everything, but it seems we often need multiple of the same kind to learn things completely (various ways of presenting the same information). I will surely give some of these a try :)
Definitely agree with this. I've been flying on XPlane on and off for a year or so, had vatsim the whole time but never had the balls to actually communicate with ATC. Bought msfs2020 and really want to learn the correct way of flying VFR and also communicating with ATC, this is probably the best video I've seen explaining the communication with ATC. Please keep videos like this coming, I've subscribed. Good job man, excellent video.
Honestly you learn fast. I’m 15 and I just started flying on vatsim and even on my first few flights i’ve learned a lot. I’ve mostly done traffic patterns and vfr to other airports but I don’t know how to do Ifr and it seems like you need to know a lot. I still have a lot to learn though, like today I didn’t check the atis before arriving at an airport and the atc was giving me an attitude and it honestly kinda pisses me off. But that’s the only ignoranus controller that i’ve come across, most are very accommodating and respectful of my begginerness. Most people understand that it’s just a game so don’t feel scared to go into it not knowing much
This is an amazing video. Excellent production and clarity. I’m quite intimidated to use Vatsim, so it is nice to be led gently into the system. Thank you!
Thanks Noah! I recommend starting with VFR flight at a regional airport that is being controlled by a center controller. That way you're still provided ATC coverage but nothing complex. Flying through class B can be pretty tough business. Class C is easy enough, just might get limited vectoring or altitude restrictions to keep you out of traffic flows. I can't recommend flying with a VFR sectional enough. Just so you know where the airspace is and how to avoid it/what levels to fly at. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
AtmosFlight Thank you so much! I do have a question, however. So for example, if you need to contact ground but only center is online, would you address center as “Center” and then within your message say where you are at specifically, or address them as “AirportName Ground”?
This was very informative. I flew into class B airspace yesterday in a A320 and made a mockery of myself because it was my first time on the network and 0 zero experience with ATC. My fault because I should be practicing the smaller flights like this. Also would love IFR tutorial.
Jeremaine Larmond lmao! Same but like 10 years ago. Advice: start small. Like with a small prop plane. Do VFR. My last video was IFR focused. Check it out. Not a complete tutorial, but at the least a preview.
sked the first time I tried flying IFR, I had a direct flight plan, controller gave me an amended clearance and I disconnected because I had no idea what it all meant
Absolutely love this video. I think you just sold me on vatsim as the training tool I need. Your channel is going to gain a lot of traction with videos this well done. Thank you for making this!
And flying in Europe especially Germany you really need to have precise VFR charts, or a good knowledge of the area on and around controlled airports, because for the most part you’re following rather strict routes in and out of the control zone (mostly not in runway heading nor in a straight line). This really ups the task level. Squawk 7000, never say “with you”, ask for “flight information service”, only turn right when approved... and up you go ;)
@@atmosflight5534 hey man ! Love the game! Still afraid to jump on Vatsim...but I configured ILS landing on the CJ4 super easy to practice...take off and land at the same airport. Doing that on the Airbus looks like a daunting task on the videos. If you can post one where I can easily configure ILS landing on the same airport that be great...
Fantastic vid, thank you. A structured step-by-step series like this is definitely needed for Vatsim training - for those of us just starting at least. Sub'd and looking forward to more content. Thanks again.
*Im still blown away that this is all virtual. It BLOWS my mind every time. Never heard of VATSIM...... *but this has absolutely sold me. I have never seen a flight simulator with this much capability. Amazing!*
@@atmosflight5534 I remember when FSX came out. My PC was pulling like 22fps is FS9, so I was devastated to get only 10fps in X on that Christmas morning. Compared to the previous installments, the new one runs like butter! It's riddled with bugs and the UI is a horror show, but I've been happy with the frames. And, in my opinion, this is the first version of the sim where VFR makes any sense at all.
Great video. Thanks for posting this nice walkthrough and I would love to see more vatsim flights. I've signed up but haven't yet tried my first flight. Watching experienced people doing it like you helps get the procedure down beforehand. Subbed.
This helps stay ahead of the airplane. In real life (and even in the sim) departure and approach are busy times in the cockpit and you don't want to be wasting mental energy adjusting comms while trying to manage your energy/climb/descent. This little bit simplifies things to where you just flip a switch/button and keep flying.
Kyprianos Biris yeah, I did not spend much time on installing the Vpilot client - its all rather straightforward but I certainly could’ve spared a minute to talk about it. Thanks!
nice tutorial, I’m thinking about going into my first vatsim flight soon, so far i’ve just done about 10 radio checks (lol). would you recommend doing something like what you did here or just some circuits? again, nice video, it’s really helpful
Aiden Deffner circuits are nice but can be busy. The nice thing about flight following is you’ll get interaction, but for the most part you’re on your own.
Same here, did a radio check on a small towered airport and the ATC asked why I was sitting forever on the parking spot...;-) Was too intimidated to start...🙈
The key is to make sure you fully understand how to fly your chosen plane offline, then learn atc and vatsim later with tutorials like this. Approach it in steps and ask yourself what you need to learn and you’ll become a pro in a matter of days
NavBlue Charts+ will be the charts service that comes (for free as announced) with MSFS, it's the substitute from Airbus. So there is no need to get Navigraph's subscriptions, if you wait a bit...
Ra Kon I use ForeFlight for my real world flying, so it works for me. I will say, ForeFlight is almost as cheap as NaviGraph, so I might even recommend that lol
@@atmosflight5534 Sure, my comment wasn't targeted @ you directly. As the content of the video is VFR flying it may appeal to many newbies, that may not want a subscription from the start and therefor my comment, just adding context. If youre frequent user/simmer each of the services for may be worth it's price. Btw. great vid, right speed and structured content. THX
thank you so much for this, you explain everything so well and it makes it much more easier for new pilots like me trying Vatsim and a flight simulator for the first time, thank you btw are you flying a cessna 172 or 152
Juan Salazar VATSIM is really busy in Europe too. In fact, it doesn’t get much busier than the Heathrow-Amsterdam corridor. As for VFR, I’ve never flown VFR in Europe. I don’t know how that works. Airports in the US: I usually check VATUSA’s website to see where they’re doing high traffic events and fly there. You can also see who’s online and fly in their airspace, picking random small airports to fly at and do the basics.
Gary Stone pretty awesome! Not a full fledged tutorial but my most recent video was an IFR trip into tropical storm Sally. Give it a watch! I didn’t spend much time talking about flight planning.
But if you haven’t already - look up SimBrief. It’ll serve as dispatch service, but allows you to control things like your SID/STAR, ZFW, etc. free to use, allows you to import your FPL into the simulator and into VPilot. That’s what I do. When I start training for my IR I may do it differently but it’s fine for VATsIm
Cool video, very well explained, I understood a lot of it. My English is unfortunately pretty crap and I want to practice the takeoff and landing of a Cessna with live radio like a bit. That I can learn a little better English. I think this is a lot of fun and the guy from Boston Center there I had to laugh with what a joy he said hello. That is fun. Thanks for your tips. That with the charts I did not know that you can Downloaden this and I hope it is nobody angry about me when i talk bushit at the radio when i try it. Just one more thing where or what in the hell is 3BO. I have not found that. :-) Greetings from Austria - Tirol
Your squawk readback was incorrect -- he gave you 7310 and you said 7130. He said your readback was correct, though :D He also gave you an altitude of 2,500 when you requested 3,500, so I'm guessing that was unintended on his part.
At 0:26 ".... and the willingness to learn the basics." .... let me break that for ya guys. Learn how to read ground charts, learn ATC teminologies with all ground procedures, know your way around the plane you are flying, get uptodate Nav charts, decypher the ATIS Robocop, know comm protocols (like clearance, ground, tower, departure, ctl or center,...), know how to fly the aircraft on ATC's command (heading, alt, speed,) Know your way around the airspace (classification and all) .... And all this is excluding the fact that your aircraft is a Ctrl+E ready one (Imagine doing full procedure to an A2A level aircraft with all the preping procedures). ....... And ofcourse if you are unlucky (most controlers are really really awsome dont get me wrong. I love those guys.), you end up with a grumpy ATC that tell you to pull the mic out of your throat or a fellow Vatsim pilot reports ya because you forgot to put your radio freq on Unicom. Those are the basic, just in case you wanted to know. I just wanna say, this is a good intro to VFR tbh and I appriciate it. I just sometimes see people diving into Vatsim and get furstrated becasue of simple issues like not knowing how to set your transponder and stuff. I DO NOT want to discourage anybody, truly, an if you wanna get into the hobby ..... please please do. It is Brilliant! and Absolutly fun. Good Luck Pilot. P.S. If you are really serious about VFR, please check AviationPro's channel. That guy lays every single detail from A-Z.
Are you using VR set? The movement you have is so much better than mine with mouse and keyboard. I use yoke but still moving view is very hard and rough.
Hey, very nice Video! Searched for this tutorial a lot! Got a little question: what‘s your setting in the menu with Live traffic, live weather and live players? Does everything need to turn off while using VatSim? Greets!
Great video. Here is my question: What advice do you have for a complete real life ATC newbie? In other words, someone who can fly well, knows very basic rules, and never has talked with ATC?
If you know enough about the rules and terminology... Just go for it. It's fun and they're helpful.. Just stay out of the busiest airspace at first. Find an ATC person that's online but at a quieter area.. KC Center for example is generally a good place to get ATC coverage as a beginner GA pilot.
@@paulg9042 Boston Center would cover you (once you got off the ground, since 3B0 is in uncontrolled airspace (I believe)). That's not bad since it's a relatively quiet area.
Thanks for the video, I haven’t played FS for years but have been thinking of getting back into it. Actually I might be more inclined to enter the atc side of things. I have been a pilot since the 70’s and am a current CFII. I am working on my second RV and document my progress on my YT channel. I’ll keep looking at the VATSIM site, but wonder what hardware I’ll need for the atc side of things? Jim
Don’t think you actually need that much. Just a working computer and a microphone. You have tools you download from their website. Would def go check it out under “for ATC”
i was looking at trying this because default atc is very underwhelming. i have a couple of questions. 1) are they forgiving to absolute novices? 2) how does active pause affect game. if i needed to pause for 20 mins, what would happen? anyway, thanks for vid, it was awesome.
1) they are but you have to do your part. Study airspace, familiarize yourself with the airport, sectional map, know how to control your plane etc. I still make mistakes. It’s fine. They do too. They usually won’t trip. 2) discouraged. If you need to leave for 20 min recommenced you disconnect. You could probably active pause and disconnect and then resume when you come back.
@@atmosflight5534 Yea just watched your landing video where you answered that, great job with that one too and thanks for answering here. I have gamepass so wish they would at least offer the extra planes for an additional fee. I flew that one a good bit in x-plane and would like to be able to swap between it and the G1000 model. Planning on doing some ground school soon so appreciating these videos keep up the good work.
Are you using track ir for your soft Camera movements? Thanks for a great video. Looking forward to trying out Vatsim. Have enjoyed Pilotedge but I am ready to explore the world now
Awesome video, very informational. Especially for someone like myself who has nothing but Unicom experience (flying with friends and working at a fbo) one question I do have is is there only one Unicom freq on Vatsim or does it follow your local Unicom freq?
It’s one global Unicom frequency but it only works within a certain distance. So you won’t hear someone across the globe but you will hear people at nearby airports.
Flight following is where ATC is tracking you, but not directing you where to go, except when necessary. You are flying by visual flight rules and navigating on your own.. but ATC will assist you with traffic call outs. A typical landing will feature you contacting ATC with your location and intentions (10 miles out inbound full stop landing) and they’ll clear you into their air space if relevant. Then they’ll clear you to land.
I'm so confused with VFR. This video doesn't seem to cover the one thing I am not understanding. Filing the flight plan, particularly the routing. Considering unlike IFR, VFR does not involve fixes in routing. Just "landmarks"? So in routing, if there are no significant landmarks. What do I put in?
Ogg Vorbis maybe. I’m not a fan of sharing profiles simply because it depends on how high you sit, how far away, etc. I would have no problem sharing the video I used to set it up however.
Nice explanation. Trying to get a VFR flight going on vatsim. How about filing the flight plan? Do you have a video on that? I found some videos but mostly on IFR airliner operations.
Same way you do for opening an IFR plan on VATSIM, only you fill in the necessary stuff. Both IRL and in the sim, I never, and I mean never, file a flight plan. If you’re doing a short-ish route and flying during the day there’s no real point in it. At least IMO. Some argue the safety factor. I just don’t bother. I always get flight following instead.
Nope. You don't even need flight following as a VFR pilot.. Just be aware that in Delta, Charlie, and Bravo airspaces, talking to ATC is mandatory and you must establish contact before entering those airspaces. For Bravo, you need explicit clearance to enter.
When you're just flying around vfr without flight following how do you know when you're supposed to be in contact with a controller and what frequency they're on? Is a flight plan mandatory on vatsim?
Joe Holloway you can configure the flight PSN however you’d like. But you’re right - I did fail to show how to disable the ATC. You can turn off the native ATC voice in the settings. It should be under assists or realism.
When u click the disconnect button while flying, what happens? This is one of my biggest questions. Does it just pull u out of the network, or do u have to restart your game? Also, can u leave in the middle of the VATSIM session? I need answers please.
Hey bro...good video. Just started on FS20. What aircraft is this? Is it an add on? I can only see the 152 with the sixpack and the 172 with the G1000. Thanks brother.
