Welcome back to another ‘Pilot Tutorial’ of the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020! Today we’ll be looking at a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 full IFR flight along with a Garmin G1000 tutorial and ILS approach! I review and discuss the G1000 & how to operate it during the cruise portion of a full IFR flight from Vancouver to Victoria, BC. Thanks for watching friends! PS: I made a mistake - I mentioned the standby battery test is to check whether there's enough juice to power up the engine, but it's the main battery that does that, not the standby battery. Kinda funny, I tried the TBM and literally 90% of the bottom row buttons are dead while they seem to work on that 172, like the switching off of that mini map frame... such a shame.

To get the minimums call out with a G1000, you have to select “BARO” instead of “OFF” to the left of where you input your minimums altitude. (Never played Flight Sim but it works in the real thing). Have fun not busting through minimums.

As a private pilot who just got checked out in the G1000 C172 and for whom all this has not become yet second nature, I found this tutorial to be quite a useful review. One recommendation from my instructor (and also from the author of a good G1000 book): take advantage of the redundancy and always use only the buttons in the center (i.e. right side of the PFD and left side of the MFD). It's faster because you move your hand less and you don't block the view of the PFD instruments while you set up NAV frequencies, heading, altitude, A/P etc. Of course, this is more relevant for flying the real thing, but it helps not to change the habit when practicing with the simulator.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Just a suggestion ... there are some pre-configured instrument views that sort of zoom to the different instruments. Suggest you zoom in to the PFD for example so we can see a little bit clearer what you're doing. Look under CONTROLS --> KEYBOARD then instrument views or something like that to see the mappings. I think it might be something like CTRL+ALT number pad 0 through 9.

As much as I'd love a VNAV tutorial, sadly it is not functional in the sim at this time (the developer has confirmed this). But perhaps some other tips on flying jetliners?

I've been away from flight simming for over 12 years now so have to learn all the new systems again. I learnt the Airbus and boeing fmc's when i built a full size simulator in my bedroom, unfortunately i never got to finish it. Keep up the great videos.

I'm sure it's been said, but you can do Ctrl+1 to focus on the G1000 panel only while in the 172 (or the six pack if there's no G1000). That way you're not trying to zoom in and move the camera around. Ctrl+2 is the other G1000, Ctrl+3 is I think the backup dials on the Cessna, etc

Are you a Q400 pilot? If you play p3d flight simulator game, I recommend majestic software Q400 addon soft. It's very real.Almost systems are simulated!

Rather than a complete IFR flight, can you demonstrate using an ILS approach at a random airfield while flying VFR. I've tried setting up for ILS while just on a VFR flight to nowhere in particular but just can't get it to work.

You can press "D" to set heading indicator. After that, you can press the synchronize button on the G1000. It seems to have some internal offset when you use the outside camera to look around. I had the same thing happen with mine.

Yes, that would be great if you could do a vnav tutorial. Excellent video b.t.w.. I have a couple of questions. So when you arm the approach the autopilot maintains the glideslope for you (i.e. independent of what you had VS set to)? Also, at around 31:09 the altitude set above the altimeter tape turns to yellow. What does the yellow indicate? Thanks.

I enjoyed this tutorial, but it made it obvious that I need to go through the IFR training first. Much of what you said was a bit over my head. Mostly, I just wanted to know what those "little thingies" are on the Garmin screen.

If you press CTRL + 1 it will zoon into the main screen. So you dont have to zoom manually

Not sure if I like the g1000 or not. The multifunctional buttons and tuners can be confusing before you really learn to master your equipment. But it has points too in it's logic. I guess it enchances safety when more planes have the same systems.

If you think the Pilot's Guide for G1000 is big, you should see the Maintenance Manual! As an Avionics Tech, G1000 ( and 3000/5000, which are slightly better) is, hands down, one of the most temperamental and crazy systems I've ever had to deal with on ANY aircraft. Indeed, great when everything is working. Sucks REAL bad when it's not!! Great Video Emilie!

Hello Emilie , nice video as usual....and, yeap you are a nice Flight Instructor, a lot of info and i bet you are just scratching the surface...i mean, the actual manual is 600 pages...i wonder, the G1000 is more complicated or maybe with more features than the systems in the Q400? i´ve seen a lot of twin turboprops with the garmin and looks very useful and user friendly....keep going with this tutorials, are very useful and illustrative ( and nice smooth landing!!!! even distracted with aircraft doing weird stuff jajajajaj you have a nice touch!!!)

While I respect the likely interest in the G1000, it feels to me like the time I did more photography and went from a totally manual camera to a semi automatic AP camera. Instantly the magic was lost! I did my PPL with, as you referred to it, "a 6 pack" of instruments and when I did my first cross country nav flight, having gone through the flight plan and E6B and then flying the plan, heading, speed, time and wind calculations factored in, my instructor said "look down and see where you are" and there I was, right over the airfield that I had planned to be at. Yes it's simple stuff, speed/distance/heading but at the time it was magic, this stuff really worked! I feel a little "lost" in all the planes with the G1000 because it feels like there's no magic, why am I programming a software simulator to tell a simulator where to go?! :) I don't always want to fly the C152 but I would like an option to be able to choose between G1000 or analogue instruments. Maybe it's just me?

The basics are still important to learn & master. But technology will always evolve 😊. It's especially important, in this industry, to grow & evolve with it to improve safety & situational awareness. Just my take on it!

@@Pilotemilie Yes absolutely I agree and I'm far from a luddite, in fact I love technology. It was just that change from when I first flew with the GPS that I bought and I just programmed that and followed the track, the magic of working it out for myself had gone. I'm just not convinced that I want to fly "Flight Sim" with a nav simulator, i'd just like to be able to turn off all the glass cockpit stuff and have some old gauges in a wider choice of aircraft to go sight seeing rather than programme in a route to follow.

I'm enjoying that you use, and more importantly explain, a lot of the terminology and acronyms I hear other avid sim'ers or real pilots use. I'm just clicking buttons that do what I want but hearing you explain something like "pfd" stands for primary flight display vs "mfd" multi-function display really makes it all click together for me. I've heard ATC talking about bugs before but never understood till now. Keep making these great vids!

Another great video! FYI you can use the scroll wheel on any of the knobs or trim controls to turn them faster than clicking.

Hi great stuff here! I have to get a copy of this new FlightSim 2020! I have some of my own videos flying the Q400 in Africa and Asia..have a look one day. Keep up the good work!
