Another great vid as usual. Even with 1000's of hours of sim heli flying I still often spend 10-15mins at the start of a flight just doing these sort of exercises. Thanks for your vids, and your posts in the FS forums. You're often the voice of sanity among the masses who complain that *insert heli of choice* isn't controllable/is broken etc, when it's obvious they clearly aren't prepared to do the basics like these sorts of exercises and practice, practice, practice before judging. It's always good to hear from someone that actually knows what they're talking about 😉 Time for me to fire up the wonderful S300cbi..
Thanks for these videos, I've just grabbed the Alouette for MSFS as it looked great but having had no experience with helicopters my first few flights have left me feeling dizzy and have ended badly! I definitely need to learn how to fly helicopters.
Great explanation of the - very complex - topics at the beginning. You balanced 'just enough information' really well. I started my PPL(h) in 2016, in a Cabri, in the UK, but regrettably didn't get to finish (45 hours, couple of solo hovers). I'm now trying to get back to it in the sim, and loving the memories it evokes. Really enjoyed your autorotation video too - keep up the great work!
Subscribed and nice video, I'll have to try your methods and see if I can improve my hovering, lord knows I could use it. One suggestion I have is, in your description, place the airport you are using for the tutorials. It's more an issue with me then it is with you. You speak clearly enough, but I have hearing issues and thought you said KSPA instead of KSBA and was a bit confused when Spartanburg, SC came up. Good thing for me and everyone else I only fly on PC and not in real life! 🤕
Thanks…and noted! I added the ICAO to the description of the video. I should be using and practicing my phonetic alphabet in these videos when listing airports or frequencies.
thanks for this guide. I'm finding two things that I'm still struggling with a lot. 1. during the hover I start to move forward or backward (which seems to lower me to the ground), but cancel the hover. how should I deal with that? 2. I can't find the power setting that gives me a constant hover with low distance from the ground, it's either too little where I sometimes lose enough lift that my skids touch the ground, or too much that I'm getting higher than I want to consider it a stable hover. How do I work on that?
Thanks for the feedback! 1. You have to constantly make corrections, even if trimmed. If you drift forward, nudge a little aft cyclic, then return the cyclic to center. 2. You have to make constant small collective adjustments in the hover. Every other control affects the other. There is no power setting that will maintain a hover. You constantly adjust the collective due to wind and other inputs. The G2 does not have stability augmentation like an H145. It’s all up to the pilot. 3. Keep practicing! Eventually it clicks! Stay ahead of the machine!
Thank you for great video. I've just switched from FSX to MSFS 2020 and I wonder, do I really need to work with collective that much in MSFS 2020 while hovering/taxiing? In FSX, collective once set, it held the altidude more or less. In MSFS 2020 collective is less responsive and needs to be adjusted permanently. Also, I need to use rudder like 75% to compensate the torque effect, which seems to be a little bit much comparing to FSX.
Thanks for the feedback! Compared to the real thing, FSX controls feel a bit numb. MSFS is better, but some of the helis are sensitive to collective inputs. How much pedal you need depends a lot on the W&B. I find most MSFS helicopters to be lighter than real life on pedal input.
