Picking up from where we left off, let's head across the backbone of Papua New Guinea, exploring some strips along the way, discussing general considerations for flying in this variety of terrain and throw in a heap of info/"tall tales" regards time enjoyed on-type :-))
PLEASE - comment. The channel is less than a month old. If there are things you like or things you don't, let me know. The vids will continue to evolve...
CHAPTERS:
00:00:00 - Fire up! A lengthy intro that took WAY too long to put together...

00:08:03 - Start Sequence - Switches
00:18:43 - Take Off and Departure

Superb intro and it's really fascinating to learn about the Caribou from someone in the know! I'd definitely like to make another video with the DHC-4 at some point, so I shall have to study up haha. Cheers and best of luck with the continued growth of the channel : )

Hey Mate - I think I’ve only ever made a couple of comments on RU-vid myself. I get it. Humbled that you would take the time here to write too. I love flying. I have SO MANY projects to get into for content creation here - not just Caribou and not just Fixed Wing. Things are loaded right now; potential new job, new country. Super busy. I really enjoy putting this content together and, ultimately, I hope to educate a few real world pilots in some Davits that may one day save their lives. It’s been a while since posting the most recent vid; but there is plenty more to come, I promise. I am so encouraged by all the amazing and positive feedback - just hunting for the time to focus and get more out there. It’s coming…. Cheers 🫡

Brilliant video! You are giving IntoTheBlue a run for his money with your excellent production quality. Had the opportunity to fly in the back of the DHC-5 a few times, but never got to the chance with the DHC-4. Riding along with you is almost as good as the real thing. I hope you make more of these. Watched all 3 Caribou vids and they are very enjoyable and informative. Would love to hear more of your first hand experiences with this aircraft.

The research and time he invests into those videos is phenomenal - so there no higher praise than comparison. Cheers!! It’s great that you had some time in the -5s; but you missed that sexy radial sound 😂. That is a very special experience too. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to comment. Roland, that is awesome. Thank you. It is so encouraging to read that kind of feedback. Very kind words and more fuel to go into the next one. I am planning another Caribou vid; a few more things to talk about (believe it or not) and some tips for STOL in that specific airframe - help people get more out of the experience. Beyond that, expanding on some concepts in other platforms commonly used for the bush and austere environments. I also promised some helicopter skills videos which are coming together on paper now. Trying to achieve the right balance of Military-Style briefs, without boring anyone. The more feedback the better. Thanks again. I can’t tell you how good it is read that feedback 👍🏻

Thanks Mil DHC-4 Pilot for your contribution to our experience into the sim. I found this video particularily important for the ones like me who sincerely LOVE those living machines we call aircraft; those of us who can perceive a soul among their heart made of cables, bolts and the sempiternal imagination of engineers and builders. In what concerns to me, I will always take the Cariboo with the affection and respect it deserves (even though a mere simulation), extending it to all those crews who flew and made fly this respectful old bird.

That is beautifully put Paul. It is often difficult to word, the passion that a true aviator expresses for aviation, versus that of the pilot, piloting. I suspect a fellow Jonathon Livingston Seagull disciple? Of Richard Bach fame? RU-vid offers a platform for the romantic aviators among us to share our fascination and intrigue. I am so grateful. @@Skydrive25nz Many thanks Shaun. Sorry for the delayed response. I receive notifications for comments but not for replies apparently? That is via email 🤷🏼‍♂️ I would be super-keen to help out as an ‘SME-for-FREE’ 😂. I’m not sure if they are planning to improve on the product. I suspect they are because of some of the modeling of switches, for example, that don’t yet function. Always hard if a publisher does not revisit a project like this because nobody will have a ‘second go’ at producing something that is already on the market. So much of what has been achieved with the product this far is simply superb. A few (critical) areas that need attention and the airframe will be rocking for years to come. The biggest, I think, relate to attitude with flap, drag with flap and reverse thrust (which I suspect employs some braking to simulate reverse, making it very awkward to three-point turn on a strip on the ground 😜). Passion-Project. I’m all in. Just getting tumbleweeds and crickets from anyone I try to contact. Not giving up. Anything that your son can do to make that connection viable will be very much appreciated. Thanks Mate! Cheers

@Wolf_Sim.Actual
@Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад
Thanks so much Terry, for both your very kind words and the autopilot work 🫡. I think a lot of people really enjoyed the experience of flying the Caribou as an autopilot and it was enormously rewarding to share a passion for the airframe with folk that would never forget it. I spent some time supporting AMTDU at RAAF Richmond, but that was in the mid-90s, and mostly flying abeam C-130s in close formation to film the load exits at Londonderry (sp?) DZ. Very exciting when one of the newest C-130 pilots forgot we were there and banked towards us in the pattern! Had to dive aggressively and our tail barely missed them. The engineer was looking out the open, right-hand para door and I had never heard such a complete and competent string of expletives from him before - which says a lot if you know flight engineers 🤣. I am working on another Caribou vid at the moment, in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Looking forward to revisiting PNG when the next world update improves that area in a few days time I think? I really do appreciate the comments and the info from those that tune in. ‘Journeys’, with some lessons thrown in, do seem to be far more popular than straight-up lessons! That will have to be the formula I guess going forward 😂. It’s great fun, and a real privilege to be able to honor the airframe. Awesome to have an audience passionate about the subject matter too. Thank you. Cheers

Very cool to see a new channel. Good in-depth content. Love the detail! I'm not a fan of the VR view - I'm a bit under the weather today and the inherent shaking is just too much for my eyes / brain. But your narration is so good it's a perfect audio feed I can listen to while staring at another screen doing some work. Seems like a very interesting aircraft and I'll look forward to more content. I do mostly DCS but regardless which software I appreciate the informed perspectives of channels by experienced pilots.
@Wolf_Sim.Actual
@Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад
Hi Josef. Awesome, specific feedback. Thank you. Very glad that you enjoyed it too. The VR shake is problematic. I am using editing software to stabilize the view but I suspect that some of the shake is exaggerated from the capture - which will ‘smooth’ with better hardware. I will upgrade the RTX3080Ti to a MSI RTX4090 SUPRIM this coming week. The plan is to expand into a 13th Gen CPU, which has a different socket, so new MoBo, then new DDR5 Ram to take advantage of that; probably an upgraded PSU…. in short, I can buy a Harley Sportster for the upfront cost of the Hardware. It’s probably going to stay a little shaken in the meantime 😂. I record in VR because that’s how I fly. It is insanely immersive and a far more natural environment to explain/describe/instruct from within. I will do everything I can to improve the quality and I am constantly looking for info or experimenting with different capture settings to improve the result. Four videos so far. Working on two more right now. It will get better. Especially with the 4090 in place! I spend about half of my time in DCS and half in MSFS. The goal is to produce aviation skills, techniques and insights that cover airframes in both software platforms. In other words, expect plenty of DCS material on the channel as well. In addition, there will be a mix of both fixed wing and rotary wing content because I am qualified, more importantly, enjoy, both 👍🏻. I really appreciate specific feedback Josef. It helps me tremendously as I step into new content development. Cheers

Hi Michael. Thank you so much for your very kind words. There are some extremely challenging strips in PNG for a Carbon Cub that the Caribou could never look at! Often the restriction is simply the wingspan rather than the performance too. I guess the Caribou would be an excellent choice for a piston twin STOL in MSFS right now, and the pistons do give you an excellent response when nudging against the back end of the drag curve… I am hoping to produce some more extreme Cub flying in the near future too. Great time to be in the Sim 🫡 Patch 1.0.2 is out for the Boo. I was waiting for that to produce another Vid in PNG, but the patch is disappointing. I wish that I could access the flight model. I’m convinced it can be fixed with the camber scaling modifier. I’ll just keep putting out feelers until ASOBO picks up on it. Fingers crossed. They have done a great job thus far. Only a few tweaks to get the Boo to really ‘behave’ the way it does in real life. And only really with regards the pitch attitude with the flaps. It should be easily fixed.

An absolute pleasure to find a platform that allows me to pass on some stories and some of the lessons accumulated over the years. There is a lot more to come. And a lot more with an instructional bent so there should be something for everyone. Very kind of you to take the time to comment. It means a lot. Thank you 👍🏻

😂 No book yet Shaker, but they say everyone has at least one book in them 👍🏻👍🏻 Reckon I’ll just reproduce it here, hopefully with some lessons that prove entertaining, even lifesaving? That is the ultimate goal. Reach enough people with the right info such that even one pilot thinks about a scenario in a different way, and (instead) lives to tell the tale. Not really the case in this video. Just so much interest in the ‘Boo, and I love that aircraft. Honor bound to present the character of the airframe, and demo the capability. Lot’s more on the way, at the highest quality I can can manage! Writing this in Singapore right now, on the way back to the Middle East. About a week to the next vid release I hope👍🏻 So glad you enjoyed it, and took the time to comment. Thanks Mate!!

Hey mate. Thanks for writing. I have been sidelined for a while but getting my legs under it again!! Logging the bugs? I held off for what turned out to be a very disappointing update on the Boo. Spent some time adjusting the flight model on the Twin Otter and now I’m positive I can do the Boo justice if they let me? I shall log the bugs. Make a record and hope they get back to me.

awesome video. deffinitelly helped me to "tame the beast". but i still struggle to climb it up over 10000ft (without help of wind over terrain or thermics). Even the original text description in MS Shop is claming to 24800ft and cruise 185mph. Loaded or not it just will not climb and will not fly that fast. seems to me that engine power decreses too much with altitude. would you mind to review it from performance perspective (climb, service ceiling and stall)?
@Wolf_Sim.Actual
@Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад
Hey Locus. There are a few issues with the systems and flight model. First thing to look at is the mixture. In the real aircraft the mixture is adjusted automatically for altitude and temperature. You can select the rich or lean ends of that automatic bracket, but it adjusts. The MS Version does not adjust for altitude and temperature. If you set up on a strip at say 5000 feet, full power on the brakes and slowly retard the mixture you will hear and see the power rise. That should not be the case. In a climb to altitude the ‘over rich’ mixture will reduce your power (and foul your plugs!!). Clearly you will fail to achieve the ceiling. In any case I think about 14000 was the highest we ever went to. It’s not pressurized, and it’s not designed to fly at high altitudes. 185mph is TAS (True Airspeed, or ‘airspeed over the ground in nil wind’). Manufacturers are notorious for posting high TAS numbers for altitudes that you would never operate at. As you fly higher the air is thinner and you fly faster, reference the ground, to get the same speed on the airspeed indicator. You can maintain 130-140 indicated in the Caribou and the MS version is accurate. It’s not fast. Tactical speed is panned for 120kts ground speed (2nm/min) which makes the math easy for navigation and time on target at low level. Really hope that helps you to enjoy the beast even more 🫡👍🏻👍🏻

Love flying the Bou around PNG. But have had major issues with reversers, I'm using the Winwing Orion Throttle, and do you think I can get the reverse thrust to activate correctly? Not on your Nellie. Very frustrating
@Wolf_Sim.Actual
@Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад
Hi David. There is an option to go into settings and allocate a button on your throttle to ‘toggle reverse’. It means going to idle, hit the button and then advance the power levers to achieve reverse thrust. Not like the real thing, and I have had issue with reverse on the Porter & DHC-6 for the same reason. Same solution. Another thing to beware of - it feels like reverse thrust above a very low power setting, activates the brakes to ‘simulate’ the effect of reverse thrust. When reversing on the ground and taxiing you sometimes have to come out of reverse, let the revs build them put it back into to reverse to keep taxiing in reverse. Again, nothing like the real machine. I am really hoping to be able to help ASOBO with this. In the meantime, hopefully there is a fix that will help you enjoy it more.

Hi Ross. This is the Caribou in MSFS. However, you may be referring to the DCS Confined Areas Brief with the Huey? If that is the case, I shall certainly be following up with further confined area examples in MSFS for helicopters. In fact, there are some really nice confined areas and pinnacle approaches that I am looking forward to sharing, each with their own challenges. Risk mitigation becomes a very interesting topic then…. 👍🏻

Hi @mercurybullet The two Sqns were 35SQN and 38SQN. 35 ran a DetA in Darwin. 38 had DetA in Perth (1 airframe, one crew and 5 support maintenance and repair lads. (Black handlers (mechanical) and Greenies (electrical)) We were based at RAAF Pearce, mainly for the SASR but also to support Pilbarra regiment in the North. On call, mobile phone, always ready to go - best job ever 👍🏻 This was in the Mid-90s. Depending on your timeframe, you may have missed them being there. Eventually serviceability became an issue and the Dets withdrew to the mother SQNs. We used to tell new guys that on the Caribou you would learn your emergencies procedures for WHEN, not IF, you would need them 😂 I was living in Bullsbrook, Chittering Valley and Northbridge at different times. Loved Perth.

I've been around here all my life, just never saw the Caribou. We get the odd Blackhawk going to/from the SAS embassy. Usually at midnight and at 60ft. Lol. I doubt you'd recognise the place now, new tower, new accomodation blocks, the old base servo is gone, all parking areas now. Bullsbrook is now a quiet town, Tonkin highway has bypassed it.

I have sone doubt about landing in such airstips, because thus aircraft weight is not good for an unprrpared airstrip. Therecis a reason if tgey use only Caravans and Kodiac. Simmers havevno idea about what the weight means for an airport.
@Wolf_Sim.Actual
@Wolf_Sim.Actual Год назад
Hi Antonio. Weight can be an issue for some airframes. It also depends on the wheels/tires fitted. For an airstrip that is sealed we have PCRs or Pavement Concession Ratings - which is based upon weight and displacement area of the footprint of the airframe. For example, there are sealed runways that a Caribou can use, and a C130 can not. This is all based on the PCN or Pavement Concession Number for the airframe. These strips in PNG? The Caribou has used these strips regularly. When a strips condition was in question we would sometimes ask that a Landrover drive the strip to check it out. (Not in PNG obviously). If the Landrover doesn’t get bogged, we would be good to go. The Caribou runs 38psi on the nosewheel and 35psi on the mains. That is VERY low for an aircraft of this size. I can assure you, one of the reasons the Caribou was so versatile was it’s ability to use austere strips! We would often land in fields, creek beds and paddocks. No problem at all. Cheers
