The New Humanum was founded in 2018 by a group of people drawn from different disciplines and walks of life in the interest of freedom of speech, especially in the areas of human identity and relationships. It tracks UK government policy on questions of human identity, the Common Good, marriage and family, ‘equality’ legislation, and on how these relate to the fields of education, the social sciences and medicine.
The New Humanum Group upholds the values of the Judaeo-Christian tradition which underpin our civilisation. It is this tradition that has led, among other things, to the abolition of slavery, improved working conditions for men and women. education for all and the formulation of fundamental human rights. We hold that these values are the direct offspring of the Judaeo-Christian tradition and we are concerned that they are under threat. We believe our culture has lost sight of the importance of marriage and the family which has been, is now, and always will be, the true foundation stone of a healthy society and an inviolable space for the nurture of children. We further believe in an economic model based on honest practice and generosity.
While the 1960s kicked over long-accepted sexual mores, the 1980s saw the establishment of a new and misguided philosophy about the human person and society. Universities are often in the thrall to a ‘liberalism’ which parodies freedom, and produces graduates with little grasp of history and who enter the professions unable to comprehend how the ‘values’ around them came into being. The time-honoured link between principles and policy has been abandoned, definitions of words have been changed, and individuals and organisations have been silenced by an intolerant and mutant ‘liberal’ orthodoxy. Our politics have often been distorted by media which resents and resists any attempt to question ‘liberal’ orthodoxies.
The New Humanum will work to expose the implications of all this for the future of our society and culture. It will campaign for respectful and open debate in the hope of a change of heart and a change of course; it will be a platform for views and opinions which challenge some aspects contemporary culture and it will honestly confront the many problems that the new dispensation has created. We will be honest, constructive and unafraid.
