I'm in love with this tent! As you guys pointed out, the colours of the inner and outer tent are perfect and the space inside is wonderful. I also love the big pockets and the very large vestibules. 💕
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Let us know if you have any more questions, we'd be glad to help. Hope you will find useful our other reviews to come as well. Happy hiking you too!:)
Great video, great tent. Used it in very heavy thunder and lightning storms without a hitch. Super comfortable and zero trace of water anywhere. Tent definitely worth its money!
Good video with some good advice. I have recently bought the 1 person version of this tent and most of what is mentioned here applies to that one too. I usually insert both poles on one side simultaneously and then again on the other side. I tried it once on a wild camp behind a beach with a clear sky, no breeze, and heavy dew. So, understandably, there was condensation both inside and out on the flysheet. Not a drop found it's way into the inner tent. I like the way there are three positions for opening the entrance on the flysheet. in the final, fully open position there is no toggle to hold the rolled fabric so it is necessary to carry a peg.
Another great video guys thanks! I was already thinking about using this tent on my motorcycle tours (after Covid lock down) as I use the Decathlon Quick hiker Ultralight (that you reviewed) for my hiking / Camino trips. Thanks again for all your reviews they are one of the best that I have found on RU-vid. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot for you comment and nice words! It is a very comfortable tent, the most comfortable we ever tried so far. We'll see how it changes with time and more gear testing. Hope you make a right decision for yourself!:)
Thanks for this video. I'm looking at buying a tent and I like the durability and price in comparison to the hubba hubba. You guys did a fantastic job of making your points very clear and also giving the watcher a really in depth experience of what it's like to set the tent up pull it down, what it's like to live in it and also what it's like to store and carry! Literally everything a buyer would like to know. Thank you for taking your time to make it. I think I will be buying one very soon. Tom x
Thank you so much, Tom! Glad it was helpful review for you! We do try our best in being as detailed and precise as possible as we ourselves appreciate such type of reviews the most, ones that can cover most of the questions. Hope you enjoy using your tent as well!
Fabulous review. This has helped me a lot as I will be going camping with my daughter at Easter for the first time in the elixir 2. Yours was the only video I saw with 2 people in the tent. Thanks guys.
Thank you for the feedback, appreciate it! Up until now it's been our favourite tent for 2, the comfiest, except being a bit heavy. Have a great time camping and have fun!
Thanks for the reply - I have now bought one and used it in late March at minus 5 but with no wind. It was rather cold. I think that I will be sewing some fine nylon or polyester over some of the mesh vents. It's not an ideal setup for three season use in the UK - more of a summer tent really. However, the Hubba Hubba has even more mesh - it must be even colder. I hope MSR look in on these reviews from time to time - less mesh please guys. Make a tent for the cold and draughty British Isles 🙂
Yes, there is quite a bit of mesh all around so it can't be recommended to use in freezing temperatures unfortunately. Let us know how it went with sewing, it may be very useful to learn. Hope the MSR team will come up with a new tent some time soon:)
OOMMMGGG!!! OMG!!! I AM ABSOLUTELY SPEACHLESS!! This has GOT TO BE one of the BEST if not THE BEST videos I've seen of this msr tent!! You guys are absolutely amazing!! I've seen a few reviews of this tent on RU-vid but this just knocked them all off!! Unbelievable! You were thorough, details, clear and amazing footage!! I too love this tent and am really considering it! As a solo female hiker!! I am worried about the tent but it's the most I'm able to afford on a tent!! Can't justify £300+ £400+!!! It's way too rediculous!! And I really liked all the features of this tent! And the most important, I wanted to know if it's able to have a line for cloths inside it. And you DID IT!! The only ones I've seen! Amazing!! I'm subscribing!! Your video was incredible!!
Hello, thank you for so many nice words about our work, we are happy to provide the detailed reviews and appreciate such feedback. Hope you will make a right decision for yourself as a solo hiker especially consider the weight of the tent. Let us know how it goes:)
As far as i'm concern, this is the most complete review about the tent, this show how love you guys are with the quality and function of this tent, great.
I might just have found my new tent because of you guys! Watched the initial video on it, and your review only made the choice easier :) I'll be using it on my own for moto-camping but need a 2P tent to be able have my luggage with me inside. Great video's guys, I subscribed for more! :) Stay safe, Jeroen
I’ve watched a number of reviews on this tent. Yours is the most informative, so thank you. Keep up the good work - you’ve made a subscriber out of me.
Thank you so much, hope you will have a great time using your new tent! Didn't realize that it comes in 4 person version too:) Also you can distribute the weight by packing poles and tent itself separately.
Great review! I bought this tent this winter for the upcoming Adventure Bike season. Haven't used it yet, but your tips and review have me very excited and certain to make my tenting simpler. Thank you eh 🇨🇦
Great to hear it was helpful! Hope you will enjoy using it, we are still looking forward to use it this hiking season more:) Let us know if you'll have any more questions. Cheers!
I'm looking for a tent to take motorcycle camping. This looks like a good candidate. It's mostly the rain-worthiness that concerns me. So longs it can hold off a thunderstorm, everything else will be fine. That was all very well shown and described. Thank you.
I've been in the middle of one of the heaviest thunderstorms in my life in this tent, camping in the Pyrenees at 2000+ meters. The wind & rain were so harsh the complete tent collapsed down on us, but it held perfectly! No rips, no leaking, nothing. Bounced right back in place. If you're looking for storm proof you've got it :)
@@LamaLongboarder That must have been a rough experience! Thanks for sharing it! And it´s always nice to know that the tent can handle more than you think.
super video, very comprehensive. Just what I needed to help me decide between this and an Alpkit Ordos 2..I think the MSR wins and thanks to your video I will buy it. I need this tent for bike touring so Im not too concerned about the weight but I was concerned about the size of the tent in the bag. From looking at other videos I thought it was just too big and I was just about to take it off my list. The Alpkit Ordos 2. is much smaller when packed and lighter. But after watching both your videos you answered the question..thank you...MSR wins!!!
Really glad to hear that our video helped you to make the right choice. Elixir 2 is actually not that big when packed, the original packaging is misleading. Hope that you enjoy using it in your adventures!:)
Hello guys and thank you for sharing your MSR experience. Your video and tips are well complete👍👍 For me MSR Elixir 2 is easy to build, light enough, spacious and confortable as your described. The inconvenient could be the condensation!!! For me it was really wet inside sometimes the morning. Got to fix that up. Good outside night 🌠🌌
Hi, thanks for your words, happy to know you find it a nice tent too. Sometimes we also got condensation in it depending on a day and humidity and had some drops coming down onto the bags from the meshed part but actually never got too wet.
What the heck :) I'm not talking specifically about this video, but in general...you have made a lot of great videos, but you have very few subscribers. I don´t understand. I myself found your channel only a few days ago while I search videos about Camino Del Norte. Just keep up the good work. All the best !
Hello, Toni, thank you for your nice words, glad that you found our channel and like our work:) Hope you will continue to enjoy it. All the best wishes to you too!
Hellofromparis J’ai la même tente utiliser en bikepacking vélo, je vais mettre le toit et l’empreinte ensemble et l’intérieur séparément au sec. Super vidéo 👍
Thanks. Sure in the colder weather there can be chilly draughts and there is some heat loss through the mesh. It is definitely fine up till 0C to use it if you have an appropriate gear.
The Elixir on my scale, minus the footprint, is 4.8 lbs. The Hubba Hubba NX 2 is listed at about 3.5 lbs (and doesn't come with a footprint). A 2 person tent is usually divided up, so you are only saving about 1/2 lb per pack. The weight savings were not worth the money, and durability to me (I stuff my tent loose in my backpack without the stuff sack).
Thank you for your feedback! This particular tent we took with us for many trips during years and it held up nicely, nothing has been broken so far and no water seeping in through the seams. Perhaps we haven't been in too bad stromy winds in it but otherwise it is a great robust tent when properly used.
Thanks! You too! We use two bags for this tent and store tent body in a separate bag that fits in aprox. 38*22*15cm and the flysheet, poles, stakes, and groundsheet we fit into the old Quechua MH100 bag with dimensions of aprox. 50*20cm. Hope it helps.
@@WalkingNatureWorld thank you for taking the time to reply. I have this tent now too and have put the all the sheets in one dry bag from the decathlon forclaz dry bag set and then will carry poles and stakes separately. Going by bike so should be interesting :)
Good job 👌 I just ordered this tent for the upcoming Corona summer and I really enjoyed your review. Don't feel obligated to post more reviews on stuff you use, but if you find other cool equipment, please let RU-vid known :-)
Hi guys! Really detailed review! Just want to ask, you said you have used it in rains before, when packing it up while raining, is it easy to pack the inner first before the outer to prevent it getting wet? Thanks!
Hi, Aaron, thanks a lot! It is a bit inconvenient especially if you have some gear in the vestibule, you don't have much space, otherwise it is totally doable. Just try it a few times to get the hang of it.
Thank you for the comment. We use the standard groundsheet under the tent body that comes together with the kit and find it very nice. It extends the life of your tent body and here as it is pretty thin we find it important to use the groundsheet. Hope it helps.
Just subscribed! We're super new to the outdoors but we bought this tent and cant wait to use it. Thanks for your review and tips :) Both of you are so likeable lol will be checking out your other videos as well!
Thank you, Javis and Lea, welcome to our channel! We are happy you found our video helpful:) It is a really nice tent and we hope you will enjoy using it! Let us know if you have any more questions.
Hi great review! I was curious if this tent would fit two wide (25”) air sleeping pads? Several 2p tents I’ve seen with advertised 50” floor space did not fit the wide pads. Was curious if you could provide some insight. Thank you 🙏
Hello, thank you:) Our sleeping pads are 22'' inches or 56cm wide and they fit just fine, we can confirm that the floor is 50” or 127cm wide. The corners are a bit narrow so it can fit but can be quite tight. Hope it helps.
Thank you for a very nice, informative and well made video. I would like to ask a question I just bought and Elixir 3 for me and my girlfriend to have a bit more space but I am now worried about the weight and size difference with the Elixir 2. What is your opinion?
Hi, thank you for the feedback! It seems like between Elixir 2 and 3 there is 600g of a difference so it can be significant or not depending on your priorities. For hiking and carrying tent in the pack Elixir 3 may be a bit too much in our opinion as Elixir 2 already is on the heavier side and it is quite spacious too. But for the camping facilities is may be absolutely fine. Hope it helps🙂
@@WalkingNatureWorld im on my own when i go walkabout usually dragging a bag of heavy nikons , if i can shave a little weight here and there it really helps me mentally , if i can nab a kayak for a while , then all the better , like you guys im away most of the summer , thanks for sharing its always good to see people like you guys really making the most of it . @@joekelly9369 It is one of our goals to make people to get out more and learn to appreciate and enjoy their time in nature. Glad that you get the motivational vibes from our videos:) Sure it is never too much weight to decrease:) Kayaking sounds like a lot of fun!
not the same. one is very lightweight and 5e other is sturdy. elixir is much sturdier in wind, and much cheaper. different pole design, different fabric. different fly material. same brand and color scheme. that’s it.
Hi. I’ve set my Elixir up a few times now. Do you manage to get the poles aligning with the seams on the fly running across the top? Really learned a lot from your Elixir videos though, THANK YOU 😊
Hello, thank you for the feedback:) When we set up a tent it doesn't always align perfectly and it is not a big deal. Most important is that the poles are inserted well and the tension of the flysheet itself.
I now have this tent and have to say it has a design flaw. The roof of inner tent is very flat which mean water droplets from condensation form on the inner and seep through the mesh making me very wet by morning.I do have the vents open as well as the doors of the flysheet but I still get wet.Does anyone else have this problem?
We got this type of condensation when the weather was cold and humid and when it was raining but it still wasn't too major and we could dry the droplets with the tissue. It wasn't going through and wetting our bags inside, that was the most important. But still condensation will depend a lot on the climate conditions in a particular place. So would be interested to hear what other people have to say on that matter.
@@WalkingNatureWorld Last night I didn't have this problem because I slept with both porch doors open and the inner zips were open by about 6 inches.I was cold but at least I didn't get wet.
i’ve had the elixir 3 for 7 years. sometimes it does that. seems more lately than before. last time was next to lake superior with three people in the tent and it did rain. not sure if the tent leaked a little or if it was condensation... pretty sure it was condensation though.
@@carlgreene538 well, it’s hardly a concern. it was 95 f all day but 55 f at night next to the great lake. it cooled our tent walls drastically, and again, we crammed three 8nto it, so we expected some. the taller you make the tent, more wind it catches...i’m okay with the design.
Hello, not at all, just on some more humid days the outer wall was wet and just several times we had some drops coming on the inside meshed ceiling because of the temperature difference inside and outside. But overall not much problems.
@@WalkingNatureWorld thank you. I'm going to buy it 👍 my current one has a big problem with condensation. Every morning my down sleeping bag is wet. Thanks again! Cheers 🍻
Thanks for sharing this video. I have a question. I see that you pack the inner and outer tent separately. Is it possible to erect the outer tent first e.g in the rain and then attach the inner avoiding getting it wet?
Great tent but please change the pegs for decent pegs like the MSR Groundhogs. It will survive a shower with these standard shepherds hooks however the pegs will be the tents weakest point. I would not recommend pitching the tent in high winds with these pegs. Aside these pegs will bend in hard ground. If you only plan to use the tent in nice weather conditions don’t worry it will do the trick.
Thanks for the comment. We haven't had any problem with these standard MSR pegs yet however we can't speak for every weather condition and very strong winds, we got just several stormy nights with them.
Nice tent, i was wondering, i was watching a set up guide, and it seemed like it had buckles that clip in, while my tent doesn't have any, i was wondering does your have these black clips? i mean the cover part, to clip them to the sides, or is it only tese small buckles?
Hey! thanks for the video. I am new to camping and I would like to get into bikepacking. I was initially considering the Hubba Hubba NX 2 but I think I might go for the Elixir (especially as my first tent). I am curious if you have any more information or pictures on the packed size? Do you recommend any compression bags? Cheers!
Hi, thanks for the feedback! The Elixir 2 is a great tent to start our with if you are not too considered about weight, that's why it is hard to compare it with Hubba. We do share some more basic sizes of it in our previous first comparison video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-esZ5mpz9c3s.html And we don't have any bag recommendations unfortunately as we used what we had which are just simple basic sacks for the most part. But you generally can find quite a few compression bags from budget to a bit more expensive(we think the MSR does one too).
@@WalkingNatureWorld Thanks so much both for taking the time to reply! Can't wait to see more of your content :) Noted RE size. It looks quite big for bikepacking, but hard to see without a reference object. Will check out some compression bags!
We have camped in it in autumn for several days in around 0 degrees and even though the flysheet was quite wet, it didn't get through to the inner tent, there were several drops on the meshed roof but it was easy to remove. And then as soon as the sun came out we just took the flysheet off to dry it up.
Hey nice video, i have this tent bought it last week havent set it up yet, stupid question, is there a clip or string inside the tent for hanging you're flashlight ?
Hi, we've been in some rainy stormy conditions in it and for a short period of time it held up fine, felt pretty sturdy. But we think there are other more experienced people who used it in more extreme conditions, maybe they can give you a definite answer.
How do you find the weight - would you have go for Hubba Hubba if budget allowed - I am interested in buying one for cycle touring but cant decide - Elixir seems better price
As we mentioned in the video we wish it could be lighter, but it is totally acceptable for the quality and comfort it provides. As we haven't tried the Hubba Hubba yet, can't really say much of how it compares. But because we initially wanted a thicker flysheet of 60D polyester or nylon, we would still go for the Elixir 2. If the weight is not a deal breaker for you, we think you won't be disappointed.
Hi, thanks for the great review. I also got this tent. Have not been able to test it that much yet but think disconnecting the poles is somewhat tricky. It is Said that you preferably should start disconnecting poles from the middle meaning less resistance on the shock cord. Noticed that you simply started from one end which seems much easier. How is your experience with this? Otherwise from that I only feel that the fit for connecting the rainfly to the crossbar is very tight on my tent.
@@leifandersson8754 Thanks for the feedback and sharing your experience. This tent takes some time to get used to but when you get the hang of it it will get easier. Yes, we found that simply starting from one end works just fine. You just slowly and carefully have to straighten the poles first as we show in the video and then start disconnecting. true about tight rainfly, but we think it should be like that, the construction of the tent is like that.
Hello, We use two bags for this tent and store tent body in a separate bag that fits in aprox. 38*22*15cm and the flysheet, poles, stakes, and groundsheet we fit into the old Quechua MH100 bag with dimensions of aprox. 50*20cm. Hope it helps.
Fatal flaw in this video. When the poles are set up, grey should run under red at one end and over red on other end. Or vice versa. Setting poles as in this video where one pole travels under the other at both ends makes the other pole shorter. You will not be able to line outer fly seams with poles putting undue stress on outer fly resulting in shorter life span/damage and eneven pitch!! 😇
@@WalkingNatureWorld Have the same Decathlon tent you used before (the tent did see a big part of Europe - biketouring). Planning to exchange it with a bigger tent. The Elixir 2 is on my list now. Gonna decide end of april. Your review was very helpfull so thx again.
@@solar-e-bike-touring-europe If you are looking for a bigger and more spacious tent with the same nice quality this is a great option indeed. Hope you will enjoy using it if you decide to purchase it:)

Sí, es seguro que la calidad de MSR es una de las mejores del mercado, cuando la probamos nos dimos cuenta y ahora creemos que siempre compararemos cualquier otra tienda con ella porque es muy buena.
I bought the MSR Elixir 2 tent in 2016. Since then, I have had it outside about 6 times, although I took care of the tent according to the manufacturer's instructions, after five years the tape on the seam completely disintegrated and the PU coating of the cannopy completely decomposed. So if you want to drop your overpriced MSR tent every five years and buy a new one, this is the way to go.
Hello again I regret buying this tent I have only erected mine 8 times and a pole has split.I have a 25 year old tent used hundreds of times and the poles are pristine obviously they don't make them like they used too!
Hello, can you specify in what exact place the pole has split? And if you can send a photo of it to our email: walkingnatureworld@gmail.com we will appreciate it so that we would be prepared and won't have such situation in the future. Thank you.
@@carlgreene538 Hi again, we just seen your email with the photo. When we have used this tent for a while we realized that the scissor-like construction of it makes the poles especially easy to come out and it is very important to pay attention to all the connections to make sure the poles are inserted all the way. It happened to us even when the construction was set up and we had to insert them again, but then it was standing fine and all in its place. So we think it is more because of a particular construction of this tent that just needs to be treated with care and attention. Thank you for the message.
@@WalkingNatureWorld Hello again,Yes I realise that you have to be careful but this broke while erecting the tent I didn't even get both ends in the pegging holes on the inner and I did this in daylight.I have had 7 expensive tents since 1984 none of them let me down like this tent has.I can put those up in the dark by feel or with a head torch but I'd hate to attempt to put up an Elixir in poor light because this will happen again.I wouldn't trust this on a long distance cycling trip even my £25.00 pop up tent is more durable than the MSR Elixir.
you set it up backwards. it’s symmetrical, so i guess it’s moot, but if you’re gonna make a video, might as well do it right. red on red, gray on gray.
It really doesn't make any difference in terms of construction and we even didn't pay attention to it when filming. it just shows that it is possible anyway.
The weight is quite heavy for backacking indeed but the comfort and durability is hard to beat. It all depends on your needs. We found the pockets being one of the best out of the other tents we tried.
