The MSR Hubba Hubba is MSR's best-selling, spacious and lightweight freestanding backpacking tent and was updated in 2022. Compared to its competitors like the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2, Nemo Dragonfly OSMO, and Sea2Summit Telos, the MSR Hubba Hubba wins out on space, durability, weather-protection, and ease of setup. It was the best choice for me for backpacking in all seasons.

I have always wanted an MSR tent. I have a bunch of MSR gear from snowshoes to stoves and all have been rock solid. I expect nothing more from this tent. What is your favorite backpacking tent?

thank you @outsidechronicles, as a shoulder season camper this was a really helpful review. After using my old 6lb backpacking tent for the last 25 years, I've finally decided to try something new. My first choice was the Nemo Dragonfly OSMO but that rain fly scares me! So I started looking at the 2022 MSR Hubba Hubba and your video answered all of my questions :)

Glad it helped. I still really like the tent. It’s kept me dry in some heavy rain. I still have not gotten any splinters from the poles. @MyLifeOutdoors just did a wind test and the poles were remarkable. The Nemo Dragonfly is also a great tent. It was my second choice, and still go back and forth. I am very happy with the MSR for all of the reasons in the video.

You can easily set up the outer first when you have the footprint :) With the new footprints from MSR you have tie the ropes at each corner so you get a little hole for the poles. Set up the poles and then just put the outer over. It's around 1.2kg that way. (msr says .97)

Great review. I've gone for the Freelite 2P as I live in New Zealand and I'm only a 3 season hiker. Very happy with my purchase. Seems most people these days go for the tents that require hiking poles to set up. And these people often don't use the 2 poles which means it's basically the same weight. Just prefer tents with poles personality.
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles Год назад
Great to hear! The Freelite was one of my top options, it had many of the same pluses as the Hubba Hubba…and lighter. I just did not choose it b/c of the large cutout like the Tigerwall and Dragonfly. It was a close second! Thanks for the comment, see you outside!

One thing a lot of people forget to mention as well on the Hubba hubba is that the walls are near vertical form the floor which is very useful if you are somewhat tall (i am 195cm something like 6"3 in a weird system) and this tent is the only tent i fit in this category.

You can easily do a fly only pitch by sticking the pole ends into the ground, if it is soft enough. Then just attach your rain fly and clip in the inner tent. Done it a few times in the highlands with considerable downpour and everything was dry inside

I recently purchased a Nemo Hornet OSMO 2p... I'm just over 6'-2" When lay inside, im touching on both sides. I also go winter backpacking in snow storm, my previous MSR tent was great. I think I'll be returning the Nemo for MSR. Your input help reinforced my decision. I'm going on a 25 mile 3 day, 2 night through hike next weekend. We shall see how the Nemo tent does.
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 11 месяцев назад
The Nemo Dragonfly was second choice, it looks like it is 1” longer at 88” compared to 87” of the Hornet. The MSR is shorter at 84”. You will get more diagonal space in the MSR w/o the taper, but still might be small for your height. I am 6’1” for reference.

I have a question. I like a bit more space in my tents. Is the 2 person better or is the one person tent big enough?. And if the 2 person tent is better isnt it to heavy for me to carry?. And i heard that the tent has a bit of condensation problem going on, is this true? If so, is it bad?
@OutsideChronicles
@OutsideChronicles 7 месяцев назад
That is a tough question to answer. I like the 2p even for solo trips. I usually say: 1p is tight, 2p is good for 1 persons, 3p is good for 2 people, etc. I would drop down to a 1p tent if it had sizable vestibules and I wanted to travel ultralight. I have been looking as the Durston X-Mid 1p for that use case. If you get a good 2p tent, there is not that much difference in weight. For example the Hubba Hubba 1p vs. 2p is 2lbs 7oz vs 3lbs 4oz. A 13oz difference is a difference, but I would rather have the space.
