Tent stakes are actually an awesome piece of gear that can make a big difference in you backpacking trip. The MSR mini ground hog are ultralight, durable and budget friendly! I also talk about titanium Shepard’s hook stakes and compare them to the groundhogs.

REI sells mini groundhogs individually for $2.50 if you don’t need 6. Although, I’m personally a fan of the full size for the soil where I live.

I definitely think that the full size are a great option! I personally haven't used them but typically I only need the minis. I think when I got to the desert in the summer I may try some different ones out

I like the Shepard hooks for something like a ground sheet that doesn’t really need much tension. Shepard’s are good for low angle, low tension pull. High angle and/or high tension guy lines need the extra surface area that Shepard hooks just don’t provide.

I’ve done the exact same thing with my X-Mid 2P. 4 MSR Mini Groundhogs for the corners, and the titanium Shepard’s hooks for the doors, and a couple in reserve in case I need additional stake-outs (not needed yet). They held very well in lose soil/windy conditions I was camping in. Got them individually at REI.

I saw that if you buy an X-mid now they come with 4 stakes similar to the ones that come with a big Agnes tent which I awesome! But like you, I’m really happy with the current configuration of stakes we have figured out

@@outdoorthorbackpacking They’ve also upgraded the line from 1.5mm to 2.5mm (maybe 2.0?). The 1.5 doesn’t grab tightly enough in the line locks and some have reported the 1.5mm lines breaking in high winds. I’ve upgraded the 4 corners with Lawson Glow Wire 2.5mm. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet however.

7000 Aluminum (is also known as the zinc grade series) the alloy includes zinc which means it can be hardened to the highest strengths if any aluminum

I have a Gossamer Gear The One tent and I have the mini groundhogs for the main tie outs. I am looking for some stakes to tie out the bath tub floor. What brand of the shepherd hook stakes do you have and/or recommended?

I have the Shepard’s hook that come with the Dan Durston x-mid. I would recommend the toaks Shepard hook if I don’t have the ones that I have

I think you are a little wrong. The highly angled stakes will be typically easier to insert because the upper soil tends to be less compressed.

Vertical or just off is correct, less chance of a failure under high lateral stress.

Annoying they don’t give you them with all Msr tents. I bought the elixir and it gives you other heavier cheap pegs. You can buy oex stakes modelled on the groundhogs.
