Sean Connery's brother stars in Steven Spielberg's mother's adaptation of Ian Fleming's best friend's sister's cousin's brother's former roommate's screenplay that he wrote at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

www.annotatedmst.com/episodes/65/Operation_Double_007 to decipher all their caddy references except the Tom Thumb reference is wrong - I sent them an email to correct it. Tom Thumb in Twin Cities Minnesota was not the same as the big grocery store chains. Sorry. The joke is that Tom Thumb is a small corner store - making it very colloquial. slphistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/8000-Minnetonka-Blvd.-Texa-Tonka-1969-03-Polka-Dot-Dairy-1024x684.jpg So that's an image of what they're referring to - clearly NOT a big chain grocery store. Polka Dot Dairy: 1973. Became Tom Thumb convenience store under same ownership. is the caption. They were even store fronts in houses - my buddy bought a house that had a Polka Dot Dairy on the first floor.

OPERATION DOUBLE 007 - aka OPERATION KID BROTHER and O.K. CONNERY - was typical of Italian cinema-spoofs of the time. It's a lark, much like a comedy sketch on a Bob Hope special or a British panto. Sean Connery wasn't happy about the whole enterprise, even giving Lois Maxwell the cold shoulder on the next Bond after this O.K. flick. But Saltzman and Broccoli didn't mind too much - Maxwell later told friends that she was paid more for this flick than she was paid for all the Eon Bonds combined! Sean Connery himself could have done this project if he wanted to -- his contract with Eon permitted him to do one film a year that Saltzmann & Broccoli did not produce. That's why Charles Feldman offered him the CASINO ROYALE spoof. Connery said "yes.... for one million dollars." It was an unheard of salary for a film star, so Feldman passed. After the film opened, Feldman and Connery ran into each other; Feldman greeted Sean by saying "I should have paid you the million!"

As one who, in my early twenties, stumbled upon MST in the early '90s (Joel era, thee best imo) there had already been - as I'm sure you're aware - a few key personnel changes prior to Comedy Channel dropping them / Sci-Fi Channel picking them up ...so maybe it was due to that that I was able to roll with the Sci-Fi line-up with a bit more ease. Bill had some _big_ shoes to fill, as Crow was Trace's baby from the show's inception. I recall thinking at first that I'd NEVER warm up to someone else giving life to Crow ...and to be sure, it certainly wasn't the same in terms of the character's quirky nuances and mannerisms Trace brought to it and that Misties had grown accustomed to. But all-in-all, I got used to the new Crow, and really enjoyed Bill's _Observer_ character ...especially liked it once they abandoned the Roman times jazz and moved on to the Castle Forrester set. However, I agree with you that MST's golden era remains the high water mark for this wonderful show ...which I consider to be one of the finer things that came outta latter twentieth century pop culture. All of the characters fit and interacted so well: Joel as the nurturing father figure, the invention exchange, the "mads" were a constant hoot(!!!) etc etc Also, I suspect it was largely a slightly older demographic - or at least one that hailed from a very different collective sensibility in the US that now feels unfortunately absent - that could better relate to and appreciate the overall bent of the writing and the show's humor during those early seasons. Nothing against subsequent seasons and/or personnel, as there are numerous episodes from those that I enjoy as well ... but again, there's just _something_ not quite as...? ... culturally observant and subversive in the writing and references.
@SAPProd
@SAPProd 4 года назад
I think the Sci-Fi era Mads really came together when Brain Guy joined them following the events of The She Creature. We didn’t quite have a character like him before and the fact that all his power couldn’t stop him from being dominated by Pearl really clicked. Plus, Bill really found his comfort zone and interpretation of Crow by then.

Totally off topic, but I got a really weird Doctor Strange vibe from seeing just pictures of Neil Connery--and then seeing the way he places his fingers together for the first hypnosis, and the goatee thing...I dunno. It's just a strange comparison between doctors, I guess.

Sean Connery was majorly PO'd at Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell for agreeing to appear in an Italian Bond knockoff with his brother. Neither of them were wealthy and the world's biggest movie star at the time, like Sean was, so I imagine he got over it fast. Ian Fleming had been dead for roughly 26 months when the film was made, and even if he had been alive, the stress over sueing for plagiarism could well have knocked him off just as the _Thunderball_ court case hastened his actual death.

17:50 Oh this was just priceless "I'm a famous plastic surgeon and hypnotist and can read lips" why not ad "and I'm a moon man too" it's like listening to a "When I'm grow up I going to be a...." spiel from a 5yr old. I have a feeling that when Neil showed this to Sean, all with stars in his eyes, Sean ruffled his little head and went "Awwwwww that was so cute" I'm sure you would have literally been able to see Neil's ego deflate

According to the IMDB for this movie (which was titled Operation Kid Brother in the UK, so I don't think Neil had too fragile an ego), Neil was cast after the OKB producer heard him speaking on the radio about union matters and decided he sounded exactly like Sean, which was apparently enough of a reason to build a movie around him. As for Neil, he did another movie and then opened a plastering business in Glasgow, but has appeared in a small variety of projects from the '70s to the mid-'90s, which would seem to indicate some degree of talent. Seems a pretty-quiet sort. Still lives in Edinburgh, which is also his city of birth. Edit: That's all to say that the "Neil Connery can do everything" stuff may have just been lazy screen-writing, as opposed to Neil's ego. Bond, at least, had a background as a lifelong, seasoned, elite special operative to explain all his skills; how do you explain a plastic surgeon being able to fight better than criminal thugs (surgeons tend to get into fist-fights as much as classical pianists, for the same reasons)? What's doing my head in is that the producer hired Neil, sight-unseen, based on his voice and its similarity to Sean's brogue, and then *dubbed* him in the flattest accent possible. Nobody's captaining this ship.

I think you underestimate how many people enjoyed those segments. They were nice intermissions with a bit of silliness that were paced well, and were usually inventive with what the group did to play around or make fun of the movie. Plus they helped give the group more presence and kept them from feeling only like shadowy riffers, it gave a little bit of substance to their little world, or satellite rather, in space.

You know, the way they treat Yasuko in this movie is pretty bad. She basically exists to get kidnapped and rescued like the two sides are playing a game of human hot potato before she finally fulfills her purpose in the story, after which she is immediately killed, so fast it is of suspect degree. Like, not even seconds after she repeats the information Ward gave her with the hypnosis of total recall, Tony Girl shoots her. It's fast enough to make you wonder.

You know, that's one of _the movies_ I use as an example of what the difference between a star or ab=n actor is. Sean Connery only made it in movies because of his looks. Success doesn't always = 'good' & he really wasn't. Flat, inflection-less voice. No pacing. No facial expression much of the time. He was Brad Pitt before BP was born.
