Hike up Mt Barney via the Southeast Ridge route on 24 Apr 2023. Weather conditions were ok at the beginning of the day but drizzle and light rain ensued and made the hike more challenging. Due to safety I turned around at about 950m elevation where significant rock climbing was required to go further. Despite the conditions it was an enjoyable adventure. The razorback looked amazing with mist coming up the valley. This was my first attempt at Mt Barney.

If I had gotten the day off work I would have ran into you there, and I would have been turning around as well. But like you said you are a bit familiar with a lot of the track now 👍

I went back with my son the following Monday, Labor day holiday. We went up to 1035m ASL where the rock slab is. My son wasn't able to get up it and didn't want to take the risk so we turned around there. I believe that's the most challenging part of the SE Ridge track. I didn't try to get up it given my son wasn't able to get up. I bought some rope today from K2 shop, so will take that with me next time in case needed. Although next time I might just go up the South Ridge if I'm on my own.

I ended up climbing it on Monday the 30th of may, the rock slab had a rope on it that I used but I could have gotten up without it, going up the crack to the right. The hardest part I found was a bit further up and it’s one of the final chimneys, the one that’s always wet on the left hand side, but with a bit of a pep talk I got it done! I see on all hikes qld on Facebook you got it done! Looking forward to seeing the video!👍

@kiwi10r metzler awesome. I went up on Saturday (2 days ago) and made it to the top. 3rd attempt. Now that I've done it I can show my son next time and he'll be fine. It was brutal and incredible. I was quite emotional on the summit after feeling years ago this would be an impossible feat for me.

Nice climb. If you ever feel like touring the south coast of South Africa you could join me 🙂

You've got some balls my friend. I'm surprised you got as far as you did in those conditions. You made the right choice to turn back....SE Ridge only gets more difficult after the razorback. It's very easy to lose the track and a false move from then on could be fatal - there's 300m of straight air not far from your right shoulder the rest of the way up. You also don't want to be at the summit when it's wet and cloudy either. In ideal conditions (close to zero chance of rain) you go up SE Ridge and back down South/Peasants Ridge via Old Hut Site and Rum Jungle. This takes at least 8 hours and probably more if you've never done it before.

Yes the plan was to do the loop back down peasants. Given conditions I just wanted to go up as far as I could and start to get familiar with the track. I'm training to do some long and difficult hikes in Tassie next February so I'm hoping to do Barney a few times in the next few months. I expect it will take me around 9 hours to do it for the first time.
