A beautiful day linking up two amazing class 3 variation routes up two of the more famous Colorado 14ers! This was an incredibly fun day out and both routes are great introductions to class 3 for people looking to move up from class 2!

Peanut butter sandwiches are also my go-to summit food! I don't want to be "that guy" but at the end, I notice you're hiking down through the tundra between the road switchbacks. Some of that vegetation is extremely fragile and in the spirit of Leave No Trace I don't believe it's the best choice.

They’re the best trail food. I’d just like to mention though that we were on the climbers trail. The climbers trail can be found on Alltrails, as well as 14ersCom. We always follow Leave No Trace. It just isn’t as defined of a trail because 99% of people visiting the area just drive to the summit and don’t hike, let alone do this class 3 route

We had our eyes set on the Sawtooth only, but then after reading some additional forums I saw this loop where you can link two Class 3 routes, and got so stoked. It's a great day out and you don't need to do the Sawtooth twice (if starting at Evans)

Nice footage and entertaining. What was trip time car-to-car? Thinking about this for next year. Did Kelso Ridge (getting caught in static storm near the crux of the ridge at 9am!) a few weeks back from Chicagoland.

Which route through the crux did you take? Was the exposure pretty heavy there? I want to do it this summer as my second class 3 route

So this route is cool because you get two class 3 routes in one hike. Most people doing the sawtooth start from Guanella pass, but if you start at Evans like we did, you also get the Tour De Abyss class 3 route. It's hard to say the exact crux route we took, but we followed the 14ersdotcom beta very closely. To be honest, it was really easy. I know that's relative to say, but both of these are great class 3 routes. It looks very very intimidating from a distance, but when you're actually on the route it's easy

Thanks Pete! And yes it can, the gates are open 24/7. We got a permit anyways but I have read on climbing forums that you don’t need a permit if you park at 13,300 instead of the summit, not 100% on that though
