Excellent documentary. For such a young man, Rex demonstrated the correct attitude and temperament to climb Mount Everest. He respected the mountain and the challenge in reaching the summit and also knew the limits of his own body. Kudos to the parents for properly raising Rex. I'm sure they played a big part instilling these traits displayed by their son.
I cringed at 31:47 when your girlfriend was being 'carried' up the mountain on a Sherpa's back..coz you can afford it??? Just looks soooooooo wrong! Otherwise a good story.
It was my sister and the Sherpa's really wanted to do it, because she was spending two months in Base Camp with us. They are such lovely humble people.

A sherpa has never even carried my own bag, I would not dream of it. Even a mule has not carried my load. If you can't make it up the mountain, don't go. If you were paying the sherpas peanuts they'd have told you to go to hell. Not good. Hope you never take her on the mountain again. She was there for moral support at the cost to others. Sherpas are humble enough to not refuse, that is their fault - but upset them and good luck to them. Money talks.

Should have done it 8 years earlier and made Jordan eat pie. Age 13 climbing Everest ...and 7 summits before 16. It's the desire to be 1st by ANY standard it seems. Not too take away from your love for climbing, but 1st anything that is country based is silly. Try it again at 81 and then you can break an actual record. Yuichiro will be long dead by then, so he won't complain :) THEN AGAIN...that crazy Japanesse bugger did it at 70,75 and 80.....Man is a beast
Great job Rex. Very humble and down to earth ... This is a few of the good attributes you poses that made for a successful summit. As for the naysayers and haters, if you were blessed with the same financial backing as Rex, you would probably climb Everest too. The insults and negative comments only show the kind of human being you are.
very nice documentary, spanning the whole process of the journey of this amazing challenge and giving the points of view of the family members. What I miss though, is the reflection that all this and all the preparatory expeditions and journeys must have enjoyed quite a financial injection of the parents (I guess)? I know you worked for sponsorship, but that does not cover all the previous years of this hobby. It would be nice for your peers who spend their same young years working their asses off 6 days a week to establish something of a future, to be able to understand what made this life possible for you financially in your youth years. Otherwise said: it´s a really nice film, but with a bit of a degree of ´mom and dad will pay´ and have paid for much of this, almost limitlessly.

This is one of my favorite Mt Everest documentaries. I think Rex systematically approached his climb in the correct way, he trained hard, and summited other major mountains such as Kili first. Way to go Rex! My son, a US Marine, will be climbing a mountain in Peru this fall as part of warriors climb and I so wish I was younger as I would do it in a heart beat. I clearly understand the desire to climb. I will have to live vicariously through videos made by guys like Rex. Congrats!
What a great achievement! Finally a well made and totally honest full length documentary without a lame professional narrator overdramatizing everything. Loved the subtle music; so much better than the typical Discovery way of doing it.
I probably don't have a say for the simple fact that I'm not a "climber" but for me to hear this guy say he was in a "shitty little camp" and that he was "in the worst place he could be" as he was "safely" recording himself and "resting" inside of a tent somewhat warmer than out on the side of the mountain made me perceive this guy was NOT RESPECTING the MOTHER GODESS with the utmost to give. Know what I mean? Respect the Mountain and it'll respect you back. Just the way he talked about being there, was so condescending and put offish. Sounded like he lost sight of the big picture. *IMO MY 2 CENTS*
It's exhausting how every video of Everest has the same exact story about how miserable everything is. How dangerous and life threatening literally every second of this climb is. Every single one loves to talk about themselves and the "Death Zone" and how many have died and are left there. It's not the summit or the quest, it's about the danger, it's all about the Death Zoooooooooooooooone!
You mean without your Sherpa you'd have NO CHANCE!! Less of a chance?? Come on bro..if you had to make your own tea , get all you snow/ice for water and set up tents .. it's an awesome accomplishment but better more seasoned climbers say themselves ..without the Sherpa's they wouldn't have the chance..and that's not them just being nice ..it's being realistic. I'm sorry I wont accept the comments. I am a rock climber in the humble peak district of the UK. I have trekked in this region and regardless of his financial situation he has a desire to climb Everest. Personally not only can I not afford to climb Everest but I wouldn't want to. I like peace and quiet when I climb, so no people around me so I can appreciate the surroundings. Climbing with many people puts me off, but that aside I wouldn't have the time to train or my wife would not allow me. However I appreciate Rex's determination to do this, it takes finance to do this and he did it. So for me regardless of his position, he did for him. Mountaineering or rock climbing is personal. You climb for you and no one else and as far as I am concerned he did that.

Well obviously.. why even comment this unless its your ego that made you upset at this lad ? K2, K7, annapurna, all are harder mountains, when did he claim this was the hardest ? It's simply just the highest. And i don't believe he ever said anything bad about the Sherpa people either. They are indeed the true heroes of the expeditions who use them.

Great Job Rex- Greatness is born not created- There is a lot of what you have done that has been nurtured into you from your amazing family and all your hard work over the years. However, 90% of the drive and the motivation comes from a place deep within you that has always been there- The mountains were calling you before you knew it. You were always meant to do this! You have inspired so many people to only believe in the limits inside of them! You have given a voice to young adventurers & entrepreneurs everywhere! Get off your high horse Osi Mara. Climbing doesnt have to be selfish, majority of mountaineers know their limits and would never risk someone else's life. Yes there are some rich idiots that do the sport for the status, but that is a small fraction. How about you go climb some peaks for yourself and see what it is actually like. I have made closer friends in 10mins on a mountain than in 10years elsewhere.

Alpine peaks are in Europe, specifically in the Alpine region which covers 8 countries. Peru and Bolivia are not one of these 8 countries, as they are in South America, not Europe. "peak" in his sentence should have been plural, since it was in two places, Peru, and Bolivia. Later he describes the temperature on Kilamanjaro as minus 15 degrees. He does not tell us if it was Centigrade, Fahrenheit, Kelvin or what. That is rather like saying the mountain was 5,895 high or 19,341 high. Yankees tend to due similar language when they describe a place as being for example "2 hours away" or "15 minutes away". Time does not tell us anything about the distance unless it is qualified by more information, such as the mode of travel. 2 hours walking would be roughly between 6 and 8 miles, whereas, by car, horse, jet, skateboard or pogo-stick, the distance would vary considerably.
No mention who sponsered him. From fresh point of view….meaning the wonder young people enjoy …..this video while climbing alone sounds like a monumental comittment up there! To realize you did not turn around when conditions became unbearable…..stay with you forever huh? I once needed to visualize my my dead brother mother sister as angles with strings pulling me up by my shoulders and top of head to keep me moving forward emotionally caring for my geriatric dad…..he visualized his family for each step through a hard part and i just know it was that hard. Like his dad said….its hard to imagine!
I still don't know why until this day people insist on climbing mountains. it has become a joke and a dangerous tourist attraction. the first death of this year has already been recorded, a poor sherpa who paid the ultimate price so that more people die. its sickening to know they use the bodies of past climbers as landmarks! i can think of hundreds of ways to feel alive without exposing myself to frostbite, avalanches, exposure etc..

you need to acclimatize, so you up. But after that your body needs to heal, so you go down again. You can go down for a day no problem and still be acclimatized when you go back up.

Youre on base 3 camp with no shirt on. If it was that warm, there is no way the ice and snow wont melt. It cant be more than 30 degrees right there. Climbers always walking around with no jacket just to show people how much of a bad ass they are, which theyre not

Until you've climbed Mt. Snowdon you've seen nothing yet!!! ;) Well, technically its just a bit of a hill. Any suggests on a mountain to climb that is cushy but a bit of a trek and at least 3000m high??? And one where there aren't any wolves or scarey threats like that??? In the UK there really is only Snowdon and Ben Nevis one at 1086m and the other 1388m, I think they aren't really mountains but big hills. I think a mountain should be at least 1 mile high.
Well done anyway, now that I've climbed Snowdon recently (but admittedly I did it before that at 12 yrs old and my sister at 9, like 23 years ago) I want to see a mountain go on and on...you know, looking up and thinking, WOW, where is the summit? Ben Nevis is about 300 meters higher, but I like to see something 3000 meters up...I'm not tackling Everest though...lmao! Or K2, I leave that to the professionals.
i like this part of getting ready for a climb....the preparation, the rituals like offerings and asking permission of the mountain etc.....i have often wondered WHAT people DO past having the "want to....." thanks----very educational and....a bit better understanding....although....may never FULLY understand.....but that's jus' me.....
The best prepared climber I've watched on RU-vid but in the beginning when Red was showing his Mask and Goggles; I was thinking, I hope he has backup goggles, oxygen mask,m and gloves. I like that blood oxygen meter and oxygen chart he had. I could never attempt to Climb Everest but if I were able to I would try.

climbing everest is my #1 goal, thats something i wanna do once in my life and be proud of my self, tell kids my stories so they would carry it on and on, i hope my dream will happen:)
I would do it ANYTIME! so just put the money on the table. Yes it is all about money. Cheap gear? Yes of course but you need people Sherpas to carry it and people that can support you with medical help/oxygen and whatever is needed. People who can tell you about the weather condition etc. etc. = MONEY.

Love seeing the desire and passion involved in real mountaineering. As long as you remember the most important goal. The most important goal in mountaineering is not to summit, rather the most important goal is to always get HOME safely.
