On December 29th Evan, Zach, Caleb and I Climbed the East Crater Wall, which is Devils Kitchen Headwall Variation 4. After toping out on the top of the crater we continued to the summit on the upper Wy'East route. Snow conditions were great, but we battled some brutal 30-40+ MPH winds all day. I opted for a spicier exit to the route, topping out on the crater by hacking my way through a steep rimey chute. We had to navigate around a big wind slab on the upper part of the route, but otherwise avy conditions were pretty good. Justin made his first summit, and we also spotted some flamingos on Hogsback!

This is sweet man! Impressed with your ability to capture great footage in all that wind.

yea, about 40% of my footage was lost to my Go Pro having freezing issues, but thanks to your footage it turned out pretty good! That wind was intense though!

What is your favorite time to climb hood and why?

well it depends on what route I'm attempting, as some routes require different conditions to be "in" but in general probably March-May is my favorite. More consistent weather windows, not as extreme temps, and the mountain is pretty well filled in. but hasn't started melting out much so its still pristine and beautiful.

So what’s the thought process on foregoing protection on vertical terrain with high exposure and consequence?

On this climb I did not feel that was necessary. Everyone is at different comfort levels and skill levels and that is just a personal choice. There are instances where speed = safety and thus taking take to set pro could be be dangerous (if rock or ice fall danger is high) on this particular day and climb it was very cold with near zero degree wind chill and the climbing was not at all out of my comfort zone for safely soloing, so moving faster meant staying warm.

Yes, and drop a rope to your buddy if you are on top, and he's got 50 to go. I thought this was odd, and he's wearing a harness!
