Mt. Pilchuck: A Horrible Road to a Great Hike

In this video we hike up Mt. Pilchuck and see some incredible views of the entire Puget Sound region. However, the road to get to the trailhead is one of the worse maintained roads I’ve ever seen. It has fields of giant potholes that span the entire road so you cannot avoid them and are forced to drive straight through. I would recommend a truck or SUV but I did see some sedans successfully make it up the road. If your vehicle can survive the road, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful hikes in Washington State.

Hello Uncle Chris, question: how long did it take to get to the end of the trail?
@ChristopherLum

@@jlum2985 Hi! It took about 2 hours to go up and 1.5 hours to go down. I see you are posting some videos, keep up the good work!

I will say this: I experienced hiking up there about 2 years ago. I drove up with a Mazda Protégé5 [5.5" ground clearance Wagon, sized lengthwise similar to a '05subruru impreza hatchback]. I had to take most of the road at 5mph, and a lot of swerving happened to get the car up there. Be careful around corners and don't think the road is free of potholes! This road is the gnarliest road I've seen

Haven't made it to the lookout but have spent quite a bit of time in the Heather Lake trailhead area. The moss covered area across from it use to be one of my favorite spots, looks like a fairly land with the creek running through it. Its not even the worse road in the area! Boardman Lake makes it seem like a walk in the park. Good though, means less people, in fact, no one goes to Boardman because of it. And its just as nice as Lake 22! Let the tourists stick to their well manicured trails and roads! Edit: just wanted to add that the road past Heather Lake use to almost always be closed as well, so I tried hiking up the road a few times to get to the trail head but never made it. Hoping to finally go when they reopen it this year. FYI I use to go to this area at least every other week a few years ago!

Ah, thanks for the clarification. There was actually a ski resort here at one point? Thanks for watching!

I shot most of this using an Insta360 One X. I've got a video showing the camera at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aP5E3TH7DW0.html. I hope you have fun with the hike and thanks for watching!

Hi Krystof, great to hear from you! Mt. Pilchuck was a lot of fun. I've got a few videos that I'm slowly working on editing showing some other trips. We recently went camping and playing in the snow at Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park. It was a lot of fun but unfortunately not the best place for dogs. Let's catch up again once things are calmer and talk about more snow camping 😀.

Lol that road is awful. I'm sorry if I missed it but when did you do this hike? Doesn't look like it's this time of year. Those views are great. I tried taking a time lapse while hiking once and it looked just like yours haha. Cool video, I'll have to watch more to learn about your van.

Hi Brad and Chloe, great to hear from you again! This was during summer 2020, it took me a while to get the video put together and into the release schedule. I'm going to try mounting the GoPro on my shoulder to see if I get better results next time 😀.

I would love to hear from someone who made it up in a little towncar. I so badly want to go up there but I don't want to bottom out in my little sedan

You got a bit off route in the rock section. The trail goes between Pilchuck and Little Pilchuck so you end up on the southern side. The trail then skirts around below the summit ridge. The trail ends literally at the base of the ladder. The only scrambling needed is about 20 up the borders to the ladder itself.

Jerry, thanks for the pointers, I'll remember that the next time I head up there. Thanks for watching!
