Mt Rainier: Summit & Winning the Weather Lottery 

I watched your video! It was awesome! It is definitely on my list to do as well! We talked about going back and skiing Emmons as well next year, so many options for fun on that mountain!

@@AnOccasionalAdventurer I also am hoping to ski Emmons next year, and maybe the Kautz/Turtle/Van Trump glaciers as well. So many great ski lines on Rainier

Hey Brett thanks for the kind words, it was a blast! Yeah it was really nice for the rangers or RMI to put them there! It was our first time past the ice box, so we decided to just stick on the main path, but definitely hope to get on it more in the future!

That was literally the same story as us! We tried to do it last year in May and got turned around from avalanche danger on the Cleaver! I’m glad you got to the summit this year as well!

Oh yes Jordan, we got the perfect weather window! The crevasses were really opening up for sure and the glissading was an absolute blast to finish out the day! So many awesome memories! So when you buying crampons and an ice axe?!

Thanks for the kind words and watching the video! That is my friends 360 camera, the name of it is a go pro hero max camera and he has it on a pole that the camera then stitches out by itself!

Thank you, and thank you for watching! Yes, at the moment there are only 2 ladders on the DC route, but the last snow bridge before the summit looks like it could be going pretty soon, so I would imagine that may need one or be rerouted!

Hey Jacob, thanks for the watch and go Badgers! We learned crevasse rescue and self arrest techniques from Utah Mountain Adventures over 2 classes for glacier travel, and then practicing the systems in Utah as well as just building 3-1s and 5-1s in my basement in Michigan and out at climbing crags. There’s a great series from Ortivox on RU-vid that covers a lot of the systems and gear that is required for safe glacier travel, feel free to ask any more questions here though and I’ll try my best to answer!

It was pure luck, we picked the date 4 months ahead after our friend got access to the early access lottery!

Hey Kev, yes the reason is mainly for crevasse rescue, which is why you rope up as a team. If one person slips or falls, the other people can assist in the self arrest and prevent them falling down a steep hill or into a crevasse. And then able to build the systems necessary to pull said person out of the crevasse. You could do it alone with just crampons and an ice axe, however I believe you need a solo permit from the National Park Service to do so. Thanks for the watch and the question!

Hi Jamel, thanks for the watch! Crevasse rescue if very important to know on glaciers, if one of us was to fall in, we are all tied together via a rope, so we would pull them out or use our pickets to build an anchor and then a haul system if necessary!

Hey John, thanks for the watch! You can do this solo, but to go higher than camp Muir, I think you need a solo climbing permit from the National Park Service!

I emailed the Park Service actually regarding filming in National Parks with my GoPro and iPhone intended for this RU-vid channel and they responded with this “Hello, no permit is required for you to film with your own handheld equipment while you are in the parks (the idea being that this has no greater impact upon the parks than the average person filming for personal use). Thank you for checking and have a great trip this summer.” The park service just want to make sure commercial productions and companies/products aren’t using the parks for their videos to my understanding causing disruption, but that is up to them to decide on a case to case basis, so I would say it doesn’t hurt to email or ask about it if concerned

@@AnOccasionalAdventurer Cool. Thank you. We went up and couldn't summit the end of April this year due to weather and avalanches distroying the route. I plan to go back next summer around the end of June hoping Mother Nature is kinder to us.

Sounds like a good plan! We tried the year before in May and got stuck at the ice box because of Avi danger on the cleaver, but it’s always a great time on that mountain!
