You probably would yes. There's about 4-5 feet of snowpack on the trails in the upper elevations. It will take quite a bit of rain and warm weather before it is gone. This is a very steep trail. So even if you're not actively using the ice axe, you need it for self arrest if you fall.
Apparently she wasn't intending on using it. She's as experienced as they come. She has summited Chimborazo in Ecuador which is over 20,000 ft and several other high peaks. I think she's very well versed on how to use it.
