At the end of August 2022, Netty and I fulfilled a bucket list item by camping overnight at Trail Camp and hiking to the summit of Mt Whitney the following day! We had extra slots on our lottery permit and asked if our nephews would like to do it with us - they didn't hesitate to take us up on the offer! We drove from Reno, Nevada and camped at the Whitney portal campground for two nights before taking off on the hike. It was a great adventure which we'll never forget! You just can't beat this amazing spot along highway 395 and, the Sierra Nevada mountains!
Also... After watching the video, I realized I put the wrong mileage for the summit. I meant to put 11 miles 🙂.

I really appreciated your stunning video and it gave me a chance to see what to expect in climbing Mt. Whitney. I'm a 61 y/o female and will be climbing Mt. Whitney August 29-30 this year. Are you comfortable sharing how long it took to get to Trail Camp from the trailhead, how long it took from Trail Camp to the Summit and how long it took to descend? I'm trying to manage my expectations. Thanks Russ and Netty and great job!

Great video! I have hiked Whitney three times... over 25 years ago. We used to hike up to Outpost camp.. about 3.5 miles from whitney portal. Spend the night, then wake up at 5:30 am with little no pack gear....water, some energy bars and cold gear and head to the summit! Make it and go all the way back down with that one night stay at Outpost Camp. Trail camp up further has large Marmits!! they'll chew into your tent and bags! No joke... they are BIG too!! Only reason why i avoided Trail camp.
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462
Thanks for watching! We were debating between the two camps. My wife and I both said that we were glad we chose to camp closer to the switchbacks but I can totally see how camping at outpost would be a good choice. It seems so nice there!

Great job! What snacks did you eat on the hike up to the summit?
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462 3 месяца назад
Thank you!! Our first day, we stopped for lunch and had sandwiches that we got in Lone Pine. Other than that, our snacks were basic things like jerky, nuts, energy bars and one of my favorite trail snacks... M&M's 🙂 Our main meals consisted of freeze dried mashed potatoes and sealed in the bag chicken, as well as some pre-packaged. Freeze dried meals. It was an awesome adventure. We wanted to do it again this year but didn't win the permit yet 😕 Thank you so much for watching!!

I live out of state (MT) & would like to attempt this next year. Did you apply for the permit online or do you have to get it out of Lone Pine?
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462
We applied on the Recreation.gov website. Don't quote me on this 🙂 but I think you are only able to do the permits on-line right now.

great climb. how bad was the elevation sickness? what did you do to prepare? thanks
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462
Hi Tony. Thank you for the kind words. Overall, the elevation sickness wasn't too bad. I would say we definitely lost our appetite a bit while we were up at trail camp and the top of Whitney. We had some mild headaches, nothing that ibuprofen didn't fix for us. We also camped the first night at Whitney portal to help acclimate. We also live in Reno, NV at about 4,800 feet of elevation and did frequent hiking a around 10,000 feet so I would say that definitely helped a bit. I think we were both pleased that it wasn't any worse!

We must put our faith in Jesus before it's too late. Each day we draw closer to our eternal destiny and we see the world has become a very uncertain place. And what we believe about Jesus Christ will determine where we spend forever. It is an extremely urgent matter because we cannot be sure we will be alive tomorrow. Jesus said you are saved by grace through faith. And faith comes by hearing a message concerning Christ. Jesus said if you continue in my word then you are my disciples. We see how the Jews crucified Jesus, they did not believe he was the Messiah in fact they accused him of being a blasphemer bc he claimed to be from God. And he healed on the Sabbath day which they considered a violation of scripture. They were blinded from the truth by their sinful ways. People were so blinded during the ministry of Jesus that he left a man dead for four days, then brought him back from the dead just to try to convince all his nay sayers that he was the son of God. Has the world blinded your eyes and alienated you from the life of God? Jesus said many are going to think they are on their way to Heaven only to find themselves in Hell. Jesus said there is a narrow way that leads to life that FEW find. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Is your faith superficial? Jesus said whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. And if you can confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you shall be saved. Sometimes it takes a little desperation like we heard King David have pleading to God create in me a clean heart and renew a right sprit within me oh God Purge me with hyssop so I might be clean wash me so I may be whiter than snow. We must have a life saving type of faith. We see in the bible even the devils believe there is one God and tremble. And we see in the New Testament Jesus did not commit himself to everyone who believed in his miracles, because he knew all men. And had no need for anyone to tell him about man he knew what was in man. He knew their belief was superficial. So the idea it only takes believing to go to Heaven is not so. In the book of James it clearly shows faith without works is dead. Through our faith and works we are justified. Every man is appointed once to die and then the judgement. Come all the way to Christ by faith, repent and be saved. Before it's too late. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof....

Loved your video. You have a gentle unique voice for videos. You left at 9am ..how long did it take to reach the summit?? In hours. 😍🏔️🏕️
@lovingtheviewwithrussandne7462
Thank you very much Cindy! My wife and I aren't very fast hikers (at least at that elevation). I would say we finally got to the summit at about 4:30 (7.5 hours). The great thing about being slower and getting to the top later was that we had the summit all to ourselves! Our nephews being the billy goats that they were, got up there about an hour and a half before us.
