that background music running during the infinite combo against Grixis sounds a lot like I Hate Everything's intro, which made me check my browser tabs if I had an IHE video running in the background without me knowing. got kinda freaked out there haha

Nice touch with the elevator music, opponent took his sweet time, wasn't the sharpest tool in the box I guess. It doesn't look super reliable or elegant, but Ral is a fun character and I have a weak spot for Izzet with their affinity for science and mischief. Thanks for the upload.

Happy to see how similar this is to my deck, the only differences are syncopate instead of negate (will switch later today), lava coil instead of fiery cannonnade, firemind’s research instead of azcanta (I wanted to be ravnica themed), 2 blast zones and 1 less land and 4-ral for 2 chemisters

It's not quite as diverse as the builds I've been trying to make, but I've wanted to put together Izzet Counterburn ever since Ral + Ral's Outburst were spoiled. I love it when you tech the decks on my mind!

Avi Gibson If you’re looking to both increase the izzet flavor and make it more resiliant to rotation at only a slight cost of effectiveness, I would recommend switching out Azcanta for Firemind’s research.

What do you think about a deck with Vraska into Elder Spell into Mist-Cloaked Herald? It would probably be very inconsistent, but it could make for some fun videos killing your opponent at full health with an unblockable 1/1. Seems like the perfect revenge to those Jeskai planeswalker spam decks. Feel free to try it if you find the time.

Is ionize really better than Sinister Sabotage here? It seems like the strategy would benefit much more from additional card filtering instead of 2 random points of damage.

That's a very interesting suggestion! Especially since it seems to me like burning people out is very unlikely as every spell you point at their face isn't clearing a minion, and with the deck having no minions itself you kind of have to be clearing minions. Sabotage would also combo with Azcanta quite nicely. But on the other hand it does require one generic and two blue, which is going to be harder to satisfy than one generic and blue red. And it seems to me that not being able to pay for your counterspell is a pretty risky move. Even if the chance of you wiffing isn't all that high, the consequences are pretty dire. In a deck like this with very little recovery, being unable to counter a crucial spell will end up costing you. So really both seem to have up and downsides

You want to hit that counter spell turn 3, double blue on an izzet deck won't aways have that.

It's definitely a close call. The incidental burn from Ionize is more relevant now with 4x Storm Conduit and it's also significantly easier on the mana. Surveil 1 is great too and would normally be the better mode for a pure control deck. Since we're also on the burn plan I think the easier manacost is the tiebreaker. Wouldn't fault anyone for choosing Sabotage though.

Can't you do the combo with Ral's -2 and one Expansion?

Nope, you need a spell on the stack to be copied by the first expansion, otherwise you'd only be able to play explosion. Opt and shock are the best because they only cost one mana.

Ral's -2 only copies the NEXT instant or sorcery spell you cast. Expansion requires a spell on the stack to copy, so you have to play opt or shock first, which would waste the copy from Ral. The -2 would only work if you used it during your turn, played nothing, and hoped your opponent cast something at instant speed before your turn ends. Then you could cast expansion and ral's ability would copy the expansion. But then you're hoping your opponent plays into your combo.

I'm starting to think that Spell Pierce is better than Negate in the current meta. It's a pretty good card vs monored, unlike negate, and most of the time people can't afford to play around it, at least in BO1.

way to slow for this deck ,its a counterburn deck with a 3 card inf combo ,theres no time to first pay 4 and than play 3 spells before any benefit(the one cheaper thingy isnt rly useful either cause most spells have blue/red fixed cost instead of colorless)

I would make 4 negates and mby 3 no escapes, take out opt and add chemistry insight, teferi is more dangerous than narset to that deck btw. Been climbing with my grixis control and negate and no escapes are been mvps.

i dont recommend anyone to craft this deck. if you have the cards and want to play it ok ok but its garbage. it loses to nearly everything above gold rank. even some weird jank kills it hard. you go for 40% winrate at beest with a lot of luck.
