The actual irony in making the art of “caught red handed” before actually catching someone red handed has got to be some of the strongest evidence I’ve seen for the simulation theory

The artist who illustrated Caught Red Handed is the victim of the theft, not the perpetrator. It definitely would've been funny and ironic if it was the thief who had illustrated it though.

So many people in the comments acting like its just the red mohawk and the guy who got his art stolen is being a baby. Okay so for people who dont know: the art also has the same facial structure, exact same pose just flipped, and the lighting on her is the exact same. Its literally just the same image flipped and photoshopped to have very small differences which is still art theft as the artist is trying to make money off of it.

It's also a pretty well known cyberpunk piece and doesn't fit super close with magic aesthetically so it's a weird piece of art to even copy

They are legally more screwed that this is on a common so it’s in like 1/4 of the packs sold if it was a rarer card you at least didn’t print as many copies of the stolen art.

I think the fact that the lighting is the same is what does it for me. You can't copyright women with red mohawks and a side profile is just a really simple pose. Add the neon lighting from the same relative direction in the exact same color? Now everything else looks extra fishy.

If the character is a MTG asset, this doesn’t hold up has art theft/ copyright infringement or whatever they are claiming. If the original artist used this character at any point for an MTG or Hasbro product, then they may have claimed the rights to it. Does it suck? Yes. Is it most likely legal? Yes.

that's kinda what they do. card art is from commissioned artists and a good portion of those artists are fans of MTG. if you go on artstation you can find them. unfortunately, WotC isn't very good at finding artists that won't steal art apparently

look at both for more than 2 seconds. at something other than the hair of 1 character. like the background for instance. how the buildings are the exact same buildings and they both have a giant ring of light in the exact same place at the top of the exact same stair case.

Facial structure and body shapes are different, but they do share some similarities in the fact that they are humanoids. Also, the buildings are different. They may have used the original art as inspiration, but there are several things that set them apart. The things that people are latching onto are generic in nature. They both have skinny faces shown in a side profile. They both have red mohawks. Both have weapons. Both are near stairs. The build styles are different, stairs are different, the facial structures do have similarities, and they both have different types of red mohawks. Their body types are somewhat similar because they are smaller, but their shape and muscles are different. They also have several smaller parts on them that are different. If this was taken to court the defendant would win, there's far too many differences to be considered stolen.

I saw an in depth analysis where they flipped and superimposed the images. The arms are an exact match down to the muscle shadow. The hunched position. And like 7 other factors. It was definitely enough to be positive theft

The art they used was done by Donato in the 90s for cyberpunk 2020, it doesn’t belong to wizards of the coast from what I understand. Even if it were there’s no way they would allow it to happen.

Most of the detailing and shading is identical with only minor (and honestly very questionable) changes. You can really tell it in the arms, the anatomicql detail is the same.

@@MidgarMerc Lindsey lohan tried this with gta and it failed. Just because something "looks like" something else you "made" or hell even your own like es does not mean you own that look. So again, a red mohawked woman standing by stairs and and archway is way too general to trademark, thus this will never get pushed to court
