Abhorrent Occulus looks like the Eye of Cthulhu. For the ones who don’t know, Eye of Cthulhu is a Terraria boss which is a giant flying eye and below a certain health it gets a massive fang-filled mouth where its iris used to be. Edit: Just like the Abhorrent Occulus, you need 6 resources (lens) to summon it. Also, both spawn minions as long as they are alive. There is no way this whole thing is a coincidence.

If you look at it from a lore viewpoint aliens make sense. First what appears to be giant tree branches tear through your world followed by an army of nightmarish creatures comes after you then sometime later these new portals just appeared outta nowhere and now strange new people arriving, some who look like you and some that look like things you’ve never seen. So yeah obviously someone’s going to develop a fear of being abducted.

I take it you didn't know that D&D (the trope calcified for Fantasy) has had sci fi elements since the beginning. The distinction between Fantasy and Sci-FI isn't as definitive as you think. 40K which you referenced having Elves and lasers being an example.

Shriekwood Devourer sounds like it should had been Golgari colors. it's nice to see that blue seemingly doesn't just have "busted nonesense" like it normally does. Shatter the Oath and Feed the Swarm, both sorceries, were the only ways before for black to deal with enchantments. While i'm not sure how i feel about Black being able to deal with enchantments and right now they have maybe one or two (very old) almost useless cards that can deal with artifacts. In my opinion, as long as they don't make a creature that directly allows removing enchantments that functionality for black to deal with enchantments is balanced. No one uses Baleful Beholder nor the other instant/sorceries that do that because as soon as your opponent has more than one enchantment on field what it does is diminished unless the player happens to choose to remove the enchantment you wanted them to not have.

Being an alternate parallel to our world, duskmourn mustve had a roswell incident so the idea of the fear of aliens likely would exist. It's just extremely jarring and out of place for the rest of it.

23:59 Since commander has become the most popular format, I personally feel that every color needs some way to "deal with" every permanent type. The flavor of each color should really come from how they deal with that permanent, not whether they can deal with it. That said, I don't think a straightforward "destroy target enchantment" effect is distinct enough from the other effects like disenchant. Maybe continuing with theme of black making players sac enchantments would be better. Something like "You lose 2 life. Choose one - Destroy target creature. Target player sacrifices an enchantment."

the eye creature looks to be pretty good. 5/5 flyer for 3 cost. i love cards like that like abyssal persecutor, desecration demon, archfiend of the dross. etc. this one is tougher to play though, but early game can cast alot of card draw and counter spells, possibly use it in an isochron scepter deck. so early game alot of cheap casted cards fill up graveyard relatively quickly. then cast the eye.

The skitterspike is absolutely something that could be used in a particularly nasty nono red/artifact burn deck. Imagine having stuffy doll, the goblin, and skitterspike in play. Either stuffy doll or the similar goblin equipped with pariah's shield. You are essentially immune to all damage and you also have the ability redirect the damage to an opponent through those two. So if you have a low CMC instant you imprint it onto ishcron scepter and you might be able to hit the skitterspike and stuffy doll or goblin for a lot of total damage to your opponent every turn. The stuffy doll redirected some damage, and then the goblin did too, then the skitterspike hits for 1 or 6 and then the goblin fights the skitterspike for a total of 13 or 14 damage every turn or every round.

My limited understanding is duskmourn was similar to 1980's America before assimilation, if duskmourn's pop culture was also similar, then fear of abduction is 100% on point.

Feed the Swarm (the card I think you're referencing in comparison to Withering Torment) is a Sorcery as well, so that's another downside compared to the newer card. Also, Withering Torment can target your own stuff, so enchantments like Treacherous Blessing can be destroyed by it, but can't by Feed the Swarm

Good points, as always.. Feed the Swarm is also a sorcery. I think instant speed is worth the 1 extra mana. Capping at 2 life is the real evidence of power creep.

Duskmourn has like dozens of blatant horror movie references squeezed into it, alien invasions and abductions are pretty popular one horror trope. Hell - Silent Hallcreeper you showed few days ago was based on an alien movie, too. Midnight Mayhem kinda confirms that the gremlin card from few days ago in fact was based on The Gremlins movies... which is kinda funny because these were more of a comedy movies than horrors. Still I suppose bunch of chaotic evil creatures going wild is kinda scary.

I don't even see the exile 6 cards additional cost for The Eye. Reanimate it, white hits 3 mana and less, 3 life for Reanimate. No one has even mentioned the SET MECHANIC MANIFEST DREAD, which is an action that dose not use the stack or look at additional costs.

If it doesn't have any interaction in Standard, Oculus will be one 1 buck (or less) mythic of the set, nothing special, taking in consideration that Skaab Ruinator is a creature with more synergy in the proper strategy abusing of it (milling own deck, maybe some kind of dredge, etc.) and also, with a recurrent ability - better than the manifest dread in this case -, it also flies, and have one more point of defense, it's a zombie - has Gravecrawler synergy-, etc., hasn't been reprinted (since the first Innistrad set) and only costs... like a buck or two? All said. Anyways, the art design is neat.

Why are people acting like aliens in MtG wasn't to be expected eventually? We knew from the outset of this block the space opera set was coming, and then there's the nonsense set-up and implied with the Fomori and Loot. If you want to get upset at it all, fine, but don't act like none of this was forecast. The alien shit is pretty simple really. It's called "predictive programming." Look up "project blue beam" and everything that the powers that shouldn't be have in store for us with that. When they slip it out early, via the X files, or RU-vid, or MTG, then when it happens in "real" life, they can anticipate the reactions and control the perceived reactions of everyone better than if the predictive programming hadn't been released first. MTG is a game of the occult so this shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone.

Aliens Like the grays are scary. This is a scary theme set. Ask your self why some people think the grays could be demons? An alien is anything not of this earth. So in magic terms an alien is anything not of any plain or possibly from outside of the planet any plain is set on because there are moons in the sky, showing that each plain is a planet and space might be a thing & we should ask what is out past the moon when they show a moon in any story.
