Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question: Is it worth it buy a Commander 2018 preconstructed deck? Once the star jewel of Wizards of the Coast, this years’ line has had a significant shakeup in both price and contents, begging the question more so than ever if if the now 40.00 price tag for this once perfect product is still worth, and if so, by how much?
Is this price part of a plan for providing players with powerful commander cards, new and old, or just callously cashing in on a popular product?
Do not pay above MSRP for any 2018 Commander decks, period.
If you can get any preconstructed decks from previous years for the same or near cost, do so instead.
If all you want is Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow to build a kick ass ninja deck, then buy the singles you need.
If you want to sit down and start playing Commander and don’t know where to begin, yes, you can absolutely buy one of these and play it with friends right out of the box.
Stay tuned for Ravnica spoilers, previews, as this is a Magic The Gatherer channel that talks magic cards, mtg gameplay, mtg daily news, mtg deck builder tips and tricks, mtg edh and commander help and life hacks. Everything you need!

Correction: at 2:30 I incorrectly state that Wizards of the Coast said that the price increase allowed for more powerful Commander decks. Checking my notes, I cannot find a source for this claim. I believe I mistook an unofficial comment for #WOTCstaff. I apologize for the error. Correction to my correction: Actually, my claim originates from a WotC slideshow which made this exact claim. The slideshow was intended for store owners only, and was explaining and justifying the price increase. A shot of that was leaked out, which is where I wrote down the claim in my notes.

That was actually the case. I remember the article on wizards website but somehow i cant find it anymore. They promised a higher power level thats why i wanted to miss out on the anthology because i thought that the new ones would be a higher powerlevel and no fun to play against the reprinted precons. I think that article got just deleted because some friends/people on reddit also remember that. It was sometime before the release of the Anthology 2 thats for sure.

Thanks, Professor, you have eased the pain of not being to preorder the set this year. I will say playing with Subjective Reality got me thinking of several deck-techs to bling the deck out and make incredible use of the extra commanders. The mechanics in some of these commanders were incredible, but they all seemed to lack the gas to really use them before a staple board wipe came along. This made them all feel like duds...... so whoever got the community thinking 5$ meant more power was severely mistaken. The only time I've ever seen 5$ guarenteeing more power is from one of your commander videos.
@nikk0k

I believe they said the decks would have a "higher power" level. And tin foil hat theorists thought the Gods might be reprinted in the set.

R E I remember that article too and it got me hyped for this set of decks. But they aren't worth what they're charging this year, even if there wasn't a price increase.

Ben Baham Hey man. I bought two because retail therapy is a thing and let me tell you, I'm not impressed with this year's line up. The face commanders are cool, but better to buy as singles. Most of the subcommanders are meh, or don't fit the flow of the decks well at all and are also better off as singles.

Cameron Stradling Definitely. You get a lot of bulk crap, but you also get a few cards that are not overly likely to be printed outside of Commander products. So if there is just one of those cards you think you might want to play in one of the decks, I'd say buying the deck is worthwile. Especially since some of the by-catch almost always has it's uses.

The fact that i don't like is that they are made to be fun but basically if you play with other friends that are using one among the others pre cons. They have mechanics that are fun to play surely but they are not basically meant to win the game. I'm not saying that playing magic is only about winning. I'm saying that it seems they basically focused on some funny "tricks" instead of a real strategy.

Thank you for speaking the truth and not jumping on the "it's cool band wagon" likely some other content creators! I wouldn't mind the price increase if they made the mana base little better. Not asking for fetch or shock lands but at least a pain land, check land or Odyssey filter lands. Not to mention they could have finished the talisman cycle if they didn't want us to have a chromatic lantern. For the price increase we didn't even get new art basic lands. I apologize for my negativity but they are a real let down this year.

Mana base being those notches more efficient especially in the 3-color decks would sure be nice. Crucible of Worlds or Scapeshift or something in Windgrace, and Sensei's Divining Top in Aminatou, etc. would have been better.

Really appreciate your work! I had already purchased Adaptive Enchantment due to my casual “Modern” deck being the same basic strategy already. I had wanted to convert it into a Commander deck for a while, but I lacked the knowledge and EDH staples to make a good deck. This one was a no-brainer for me as a result, so I bought it without waiting for your video. Your evaluation was solid and I’m happy to have miraculously gotten it for less than MSRP. Normally I buy at my local store even if I need to pay more, but as I got an offer to buy all 4 for 85€ together I took it as I normally would not have considered buying them. 85€ pretty much covers the value cards in the decks, so I can live with that decision and have stuff to tinker with for around 3 decks I might want to build* (and sleeves and boxes are bought at the LGS anyway). * Brudiclad - Token Trouble Yuriko - Bouncing Shinobis Thantis - Spreading Discord

@necrogenesis1981
@necrogenesis1981 5 лет назад
I still don't understand the whole curling issue, I have really old foils that aren't perfectly flat either, I just figured that was normal. I keep them in binders though so it's not really noticeable, and I'm not really a collector so I don't care much. I would think putting pressure on the cards would fix the issue though.
@ashley587
@ashley587 5 лет назад
Russell to fix a bend by applying pressure you'd need to apply the exact bend in the opposite direction for a long while which is hard to get right and will probably just damage the card more.
@necrogenesis1981
@necrogenesis1981 5 лет назад
I guess I don't quite understand physics then, I would think just holding it in a neutral position for a while would fix it. But I've never bothered to try anyway. Why has this only recently been a complaint though? All foils get a slight bend to them over time, don't they? I don't remember this ever being only a recent issue.

I usually agree with you Professor, but I think the financial story these decks tell have clouded your judgement in other areas. I have done a lot of testing with these over the past two days and have played them not only against each other but also against other precons and normal commander decks and what I found was the exact opposite of yours: These decks are some of the strongest and most reliable precons I've seen. They are less flashy than previous years, agreed, but the gameplay is consistently fun. Let me explain: They do not contain a lot of expensive cards, but the cards you call 'bulk' are not only playable but actually good. The decks contain lots of card draw, ramp and answers to threats, so maybe you're not playing the biggest baddest creatures yourself, but you are very well equipped to answer almost everything. These kinds of cards (e.g. the ones that wipe the board or ramp you) have often been kind of neglected in the precons: My first advise to new players always was to throw in a bunch of removal, card draw and ramp, because historically there wasn’t much, but these decks have lots of them. In playing with them I found that games tended to last a little bit longer - such is the nature of planeswalkers as commanders - but they tended to be diverse, fun, with lots of cool shenanigans and lots of eureka moments with cool cards that reacted with each other in unexpected ways. I also played them with a few kids (around 12 and 13) that had recently started playing commander and they really felt a sense of discovery while playing these decks that they probably would have less if I had given them the much more straight forward cats deck from last year for instance. I do have some problems with these decks, for example: the mana bases are worse than previous years, the decks need more ways to close out games (too little finishers) and it’s a shame that there are less financially interesting cards. But all of these decks are very fun to play - I found them to be balanced in a gameplay perspective, with the jund deck actually winning the most games - and more diverse than last years, which were kind of all or nothing. So I’m not saying these decks are perfect, yet I still think they aren’t worse than previous years, just different.

@Arvensa
@Arvensa 5 лет назад
I agree this video (and kind of this channel overall) is too hyper-focused on secondary market value. That's why I watch some of the TCC content when it looks actually relevant to me, and a few other MtG channels more often. I think it needs to be given more appreciation how many archetype 'slots' this product gives support to by existing (you know the list by now: esper zombies, bant enchantress, ninja tribal, jund land commander, more UR artificer legends...) I got my fun new toys out of the ones I got this time around, and some acceptable ultility/synergy to use as a foundation to renovate into a personalized deck. If this product wasn't produced, those toys just wouldn't exist for me to have fun with, unless I design them as well myself, and then could convince some friends to play with custom cards enough to make building the decks worth it. Yes, I'm not too happy about the price increase, there are some QA issues, and I do think each deck could have easily had one-three more good money-value cards that were right on-theme. Perhaps the ratio of ramp/card draw/removal is a bit questionable across the four decks. The mana bases could have much better value. Those are valid criticisms. But the pervasive backlash I've seen everywhere just comes off as too much, and most of it doesn't even end up expressed in a way that succintly highlights those issues. (The Command Zone videos did actually mention these things in all the review episodes. I *highly* suspect a large proportion of the nay-sayers all over their comments didn't actually watch all the way though, or weren't really paying attention through their salt-- guys, I watch on 1.5x-speed while multitasking an mmo, and you can too; I know they are 1hr+ videos and there are many of them) I think the overall end-grade is pretty indicative. Prof gave the run a B-. That's above C-level, mediocre. But he spun it as 'that's what they give when you're really failing in Grad school' -- like What? The reason you'd inflate someone to a B- in Grad school has absolutely nothing to do with rating an entertainment product. Prof is totally free to actually just give these a C or C- or whatever, if that's what he really thinks. Remind me again, does Prof play much Commander? I saw him on the ep of Game Knights, but does he in general enjoy the kind of splashy themes this year's run provides official support to, while managing to keep the designs open enough to build with real agency?

I also believe that this bias just spread to a point that no one can really think by just looking at the decklists, i think that they are playable at the precon level, such as past years deck lists, the precon wizards of the coast decks are always not that good, i agree that they could have put some more valuable reprints, but this decks are fun! They contain removals, draws, their own bombs in their strategys, the problem is that people is just looking at monetary value and forgot totally the functional part of the decks. For example, vampiric bloodlust, a deck that everybody loves is a nice one, but... in an EDH game the deck struggles a LOT to recover form a bord-wipe, and folks, the board-wipe happens in EVERY EDH game, but no one claims that the deck is shit because of that, lol

Your findings on the decks' relative power levels are interesting. Playing on release yesterday, after a dozen or so games we generally found Nature's Vengeance to be the most powerful deck. From Windgrace providing consistent card draw and ramp, to having solid finishers like Avenger of Zendikar, Rampaging Baloths, and Nesting Dragon (yes, all Landfall based), while the other decks could hold their own and provide fun games, they just didn't have what it took to close games out. Saheeli had little worth ramping into and her ultimate was never worth using, and the other two just couldn't draw the cards they needed to do much. The only games Windgrace lost were to Skull Storm cast for free or a manifested Magus of the Balance. Not that this is wholly empirical evidence, but I think the decks are probably more balanced than we've all found, with different results coming from different play styles and just dumb luck. I do completely agree with you on many other issues, like the quality of reprints (especially in the lands, the last two years have shown there's no reason why we can't get decent lands. Like the scrying temples for Aminatou and man lands in Windgrace), and these being the worst precons since perhaps the originals, but against each other I'd argue they're fine, and they're probably better in general than they first appear, as much as they could be vastly improved.

Since I saw the full decklists I was eagerly awaiting this video. Every other MtG content creator that put up a video about these was biased because their videos was sponsored. Still gave it a very generous mark for how bad the precons are (we played them at our LGS straight out of the box today). Before decklists I was prepared to buy all 4 decks, now I've placed my singles order for 11 individual cards.

My favourite command-decks of all time! There has never been a year with so much flavour in the decks and never have I played decks that have been so fun straight out of the box. I have bought a deck every year but this year is my absolute fave. Love all four! I started with edh years ago when the format was casual and ”just have a fun time with wacko plays” in my playgroup we have one shared cardpool and then we modify each deck to make them all equally strong and fun. I am getting so tired of this whole ”win”-focus. Some of us just wants to have a fun time and these decks are imo the best yet. So fun mechanics and amazing flavour.

Anyone who's wondering about the re-upload: at 1:05 of the original video, it was noticed (by yours truly) that the deck box has the wrong set symbol on it, but it was not mentioned in that video. It has Commander Anthology emblem, instead of Commander 2018. Not sure if there's any more changes in the rest of the video, but seems like it was significant enough of a thing to be mentioned in the re-upload.

It should really be stressed that $40 is no longer a reasonable price tag for new players. Even $30 was on the high end for a BEGINNER product and $35 was really pushing it. Most people who don't have a full time job ( the vast majority of people with enough time to actually get into magic) are gonna look at the $40 price tag and pass because it's just way too much money to spend on a game you might not like. It's sad because the first magic product I bought was a Commander 2013 deck and if that had been $40 at the time, I can guarantee I would not have bought the deck and would probably not be playing magic today. This is coming from someone who has a full time job. A $35k cube with a full set of power and revised duals and 2 $5k commander decks. Not just some kid who's mad they can't afford the product.

Yes, good Sir. I’ve argued that point several times over. Some folks try to defend that the raised MSRP + lowered reprint total value would discourage the “sharks” (traders & tournament players) from tis product. But, please, how is that convincing to potential EDH newbies & existing players to start/continue buying in? ...the amount of “air” in the product must b getting into some of them sympathisers’ heads
@garretth.251
@garretth.251 5 лет назад
I agree. As an example, a group of 4 friends can go out and buy a $30-$40 board game and play that game for hours and hours. To do this with Commander decks at MSRP requires $160 from the group for approximately the same number of hours of enjoyment (depending on the board game chosen, of course). I play with my cousins and brother-in-law once a year, and while I've tried to get them to buy commander decks, they all have a stash of old cards from their teenage years and would rather build decks with what they have. Contrast that with me who didn't buy any Magic cards until I was an adult. For me, the Feline Ferocity deck from last year was a great buy and a ton of fun to play against some coworkers who also bought Commander 2017 decks. But you really need someone dedicated to the game to lay down $40+ dollars for a new format.

I bought me and my friend Overwatch for the cost of one of these decks. One of the hottest video games in the world with endless replayability, 40 million current players, can play with 4 of our friends, and it has a massively expanding proscene with one of the most successful inaugural esports seasons of all time. Undeniably a better value than these mediocre cash grabs by wizards. I bought Subjective Reality and Exquisite Invention at my LGS yesterday at $39.99 each. I had done a lot of research to try to narrow down which ones I liked the commanders of, which I liked the tactics and playability of and I think I made the right choices for me, anyway. The Adaptive Enchantment deck was priced at least $10-15 more than the ones I bought. I knew that at least one would be higher prices but based on your video, I don't understand why Adaptive was chosen by the LGS to be higher. And even though I don't agree with your B- grade of the 2018 Commanders, I do respect your thorough research and explanation as to WHY you have the opinion that you've formed. @Kestral287
@Kestral287 5 лет назад
To /some/ extent they allow for playability. Once the enchantment deck had an auras-matter and enchantment creatures matter subtheme to them, for example, some cheap cards were inevitable; Boon Satyr isn't a valuable card but it is a very good card if Kestia is your commander-- and there aren't really a lot of valid replacements for it that do have value, since the most expensive (non-god, since those are mostly eh in Kestia) enchantment creature is only like $3, and Courser is probably worse than Boon Satyr in the deck. There are a number of cards in this sort of category that spring to mind; Overgrowth is amazing with Estrid and I would want /more/ of those type of effects in the deck, never mind that all of them save Utopia Sprawl are bulk price. At the same time yes, there are a number of cards in the decks that are just bad and /don't/ have a lot of justification. When your new cards are falling into the bulk range, that's a problem. Those are the cards that sell the set, and while we have to accept the occasional dud (here's looking at you, Territorial Hellkite), it feels like this set has a /lot/ of them.

The Dark One Thanks for the support! I got a nice amount of upgrading cards and i'll be replacing about 16-17 cards in deck (only 2 of them are lands) so my spells might get better, because 25% of them will be new. Also, I am a huge fan of kaladesh artwork (im collecting foils), so Saheeli will be the most satisfying commander to look at (and artifacts and some other cards have same set theme). And, actually, i think that my deck will recive some more upgrades (like rhystic study and others) to make the worst sides of the deck better. And the most important for me, as i think now, is a personal attachment to the deck and commanders. In my LGS EDH community is not very competitive, so i might get a chance. Sorry for my long response. And my English level might be bad, i live in Russia( Thanks a lot again!

I don't think it's fair to imply that there's zero percent chance of winning with these precons - I bought Adaptive Enchantment yesterday and won 4 of the 6 games I played with her, against precons and tuned built from scratch decks alike. And everyone at my lgs that was playing with one of the precons was having a blast, even if they already had their own decks. I think the people in the comments of all these videos hating on the decks without playing them are doing a great disservice to a genuinely fine product.
@Arvensa

Yeah, I'm super excited about all of the new commanders, and the mediocre decklists are okay. There are still plenty of cards in them that I've wanted as singles for a while, and fine utility stuff. I've already got a lot of the lands-matter stuff Windgrace's list is missing anyway, so it's just a matter of choosing more payoffs to craft in to the synergy. I''ve also got really cool stuff in mind to custom-build out for Brudiclad (as a lieutenant) and Tawnos, and while I'm not taking on the projects right now, I can see some fun potential in the other new commanders. Like, yeah, I'll take a spread of passable if a bit mediocre overall lists due to being split in so many directions, along with a whole slew of compelling new Legends. Especially since my two playgroups have a range of (on the Command Zone scale) pretty casual to focused/optimized, with almost no competitive. The value proposition for this product is just there for me, so I got half of them. (I can't justify just dropping like $100+ on cardboard atm and I can only work on so many deck-building projects at once...)
@jonniepeacock

I agree. I preordered all these decks (cause I’m a glutton for Commander) and I had a great time. I played each deck a minimum of 2 times each and they performed fine against the other precons and built decks. They definitely don’t compare to spiky end-the-game-on-turn-three decks, but they have plenty of removal and interaction to keep up otherwise. I do agree with the professor about the value aspect. No notable reprints or new cards of note to justify the price increase. I also think the Jund deck was stronger than given credit for. Just feel like venting after my commander weekend.

I can't agree more about certain cards played almost exclusively in commander that are dying to be reprinted, and the worst part about this is what happens when certain cards don't end up being reprinted in deck like these. I play a janky Daxos, The Returned deck and since the spoilers for the C18 enchantment deck, prices for Serra's Sanctum and Replenish have been rising significantly. I was lucky enough to get Replenish a year ago for $24 before it rose to the $80 it is now, but the power level of my deck is much lower than it should be without Serra's Sanctum, and while I usually don't like using proxies, I feel like my chance of getting one is slim to none while I've watched it rise from $40 to the nearly $180 it is now on tcgplayer for a non-damaged copy.

In exquisite invention One of my most favorite cards is actually “enchanter’s bane” The reason why I really like this card is it reminds me of a few different types of cards like Abyss, or Drop of honey. Having the opportunity to have this coming to play and at the instep target enchantment and then that deals damaged equal to the enchantment price unless he or she sacrifices it!! That’s super Duper good, and I think it’s along that same line!!

WotC managed to make the best product they had and transform it into a bad one. Congrats, that required effort to mess that hard up.

My friends and I picked up three of the precons yesterday (Everything but the lands deck) and played against each other. I think we all had fun, and actually the enchantments deck seemed to have the hardest time. Totally agreed about the value. It’s absolutely silly that a price increase is supposedly necessary to put different ink on a piece of cardboard, but then to not actually do it, well that’s just, just, par for the course for WotC

So glad I got my precon at under msrp. A comic shop actually had a couple of each deck and they were already discounted a bit.

I thank you for a honest review and willingness to call out a product weak and suggesting purchase of yesteryears commander decks. I watched some of the more popular EDH channels on commander 2018 and they certainly held back their criticism.

I’ve found nature’s vengeance to be the most powerful consistently. I really enjoy these decks! Super fun to play.
