MTG Top 10: Throne of Eldraine | Magic: the Gathering | Episode 392 

To this day I don't understand how the Castles weren't legendary. They have proper nouns for their names. And also...holy shit Questing Beast and Murderous Rider couldn't even make this list. Insane.

The fact that Fires of Invention, Mystic Sanctuary, Escape to the Wilds and Lucky Clover (all cards that had to be banned) don't crack this list just shows how nuts this set was and is to this day.

Throne of Eldraine: So busted a top ten list has to have 12 cards on it. That's value! ;)

The fact that Oko has THAT many points despite being banned so quick in literally all formats except its most powerful one is insane. I remember those two months of standard and i cannot wait for this set to rotate :p

Oko was so powerful that Jace had a mental breakdown and forgot how to be a good card. Jace closed the Gatewatch Discord and they’ve been wandering the multiverse aimlessly ever since.

When #10 already starts off with 50+ points, you know sh*ts about to get real on this list 😳

Every single card placing 7th and above is in my cube. The cube that has tinker/blightsteel, Leovold/Narset + wheels, Ral/stasis, etc. If that doesn't tell you how much raw power was in this set I don't know what will.

While I loved the flavour of Eldraine and it was a blast to play in draft, it really was ridicolously power-crept, as this list proves.

I only played brawl in Arena but I remember stuffing once upon a time into every green deck I made. Eldraine was really out of control lol

How many points did Mystical Dispute get? I feel like it's in the sideboard of every blue deck all the way back to Modern. According to MTGG: 4th most played card in Standard, 5th most played in Modern, THE most played in Pioneer, 3rd most played in Historic.

Throne isn't just one of the most pushed recent sets, it is one of the most pushed sets period. It would crack the list in about the middle of the pack of your most banned sets video if you redid that one today.

I started this game during Eldraine so I love/hate this set being my first experience with the community (prerelease, FNM, Draft, League) and turning them into 3/3 elk.

Since Oko isn't number 1 I'm guessing it's gotta be one of the lands, prolly Fabled Passage Edit: Yup, turns out Evolving Wilds with upside is pretty strong

Some very powerful cards not on this list: Questing Beast, Murderous Rider, The Great Henge, Rankle, Robber of the Rich, Escape to the Wilds, Fae of Wishes, Fervent Champion, Fires of Invention, Stonecoil Serpent, Claim the Firstborn, Lucky Clover. This set was so insane that a card that lets you cast two spells for free on each of your turns doesn't even make the Top 10. This rotation is gonna be juicy.

Just now realized Lovestruck Beast with Lucky Clover is just giving the guy multiple lovers. Lucky indeed...

I guessed Fabled Passage might pop up somewhere on the list, but considering with the power of so many of the other cards on this list, the fact it's number one is crazy.

I definitely expected Mystical Dispute or Veil of Summer to make it, that they did not just shows how powerful ELD really is.

What an absolute monstrosity of a set. Geez.

I'm pretty sure Oko could have been fixed by simply making the +1 a -1, and that it got through playtesting without that being changed still amazes me two years later. It being -1 only makes sense and would only slightly reduce the power of Oko, but would at least have made it fair. Of all planeswalkers, the only other ones that have a +X that outright gets rid of or replaces a permanent the opponent controls on the battlefield are Garruk, Apex Predator; Nicol Bolas, Dragon God (conditionally, as it can exile cards from hand instead); and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, all of which are significantly harder to cast than the 1GU that Oko costs. That single letter change could have saved a lot of headaches and made Oko's powerlevel lowered by just enough that he would probably still be legal, since you couldn't do that every turn and keep him alive forever.

This puts into context just how powerful this set was. Embercleave didn't make top 8 and it has been played all throught it's life in standard. It would be interesting to know what other standard sets have had a stronger impact on eternal formats.

This could be a top 50 and there would still be cards missing from the list.

I loved eldraine minus a few cards (oko, fires, uro lol). Bonecrusher giant is a straight awesome red creature. So its shock modularity made is the best on the cycle imo

Sad to see how many people dislike this set because of a few cards. Eldraine is easily in the top 3 MTG sets of all time for me based on the flavor alone.

Ah Eldraine, my favorite ever pre-release draft, and the reason why I have never touched Standard since my first FNM.

I remember them saying they didn’t realize how powerful turning stuff into an elk would be defensively. But it seems like you’d only need to playtest like a few games to realize that idk.

Btw I find totally right to include lands in the list. Also this could have been a top 20.

Here is a fun perspective of how powerful Oko was in Standard. I got started on Arena with War of the Spark (I played casually in 2008 or so and then stopped) The Oko deck in standard at the time was the first time I entered Gold Rank and almost got to diamond with. Important to say I played horribly and didnt even really understand the deck. Still I managed to get a high rank (never got higher since, even though I got better at magic overall). Shure the deck was amazing in the competitive scene, but even a noob like me could steamroll a lot of people with Oko. Thats how powerful that card is.

#10 was Familiar Cauldron. Jesus, this list is gonna be stacked.

I think the sneaky thing about the sets that are going to rotate is how low-key powerful Ikoria is. Even beyond companions, which still see a decent chunk of play [Lurrus in all formats, Yorion in Modern/Historic/Legacy rarely, Obosh in Modern, Jegantha in Modern Tron, Zirda in Legacy until it was banned] despite being heavily nerfed, there's also the Ultimatums [mainly Genesis and Emergent], Lukka [a big part of what got Agent of Treachery banned along with a certain other Ikoria card], Shark Typhoon [which sees play in Modern and Legacy control], Extinction Event, Zenith Flare plus the rest of the cycling deck, Of One Mind [a card people didn't even realize the power of until it started creeping up in Rogues], Winota [banned in Brawl, formerly banned in Historic, got Agent of Treachery banned in Standard], Sprite Dragon [Modern and Historic], The Ozolith, and the Triomes. Past the obviously gross cards, there's also cards like Bastion of Remembrance, Kinnan Bonder Prodigy, Serrated Scorpion, Whisper Squad, Ram Through, Call of the Death Dweller, Heartless Act, a handful of powerful Mutate creatures [Migratory Greathorn, Vadrok, and Gemrazer]. It's insane that cards like Snapdax, Lavabrink Venturer, and Fiend Artisan saw little play with how good they'd be in a format like Dominaria or OG Theros Standard. Like, with all the power in Eldraine [granted they have a handful of bans, but as a counter point the companion mechanic literally required a full mechanic rework], the best deck in Standard [Sultai Ultimatum] only plays a single Eldraine card in the main or sideboard [Mystical Dispute] while it plays 4+ cards from Ikoria. That's not even talking about the set we don't even talk about now, Theros Beyond, the forgotten middle child of Standard. Despite it "being the weakest" of the three, it still had Omen of the Sea, Polukranos, Kroxa, Uro, Elspeth Conquers Death, Kiora Bests the Sea God, The Akroan War, Ox of Agonas, Archon of Suns' Grace, Phoenix of Ash, Destiny Spinner [Modern and Legacy in enchantress], Thassa's Oracle [barf], Woe Strider, Underworld Breach, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Anax, Klothys, Shadowspear, etc.

Really surprised fires of invention didn't make the list here.

I love eldraine

I really liked the eldraine theme and cards even though it was pretty scary with the cards it printed but hey I just love me some food tokens.

I feel like a lot of Eldraine cards are actually intensely entertaining and fun to use. It was probably a mistake to put them all in one set and cards like Oko and Brazen Borrower are GENUINE mistakes, but powerful cards, especially Adventure, are genuine feelgoods and feel fine when the power level is elevated around them. Am I alone in this? Eldrane Draft was super fun but stuff like Kaldheim and AFR are snoozefests. Power creep can be fun. I'd rather see more sets like Ikoria than Throne, though.

Loved this ptsd: the list. Eldraine is single-handedly responsible for making me quit standard and hate simic more than any other color combination

Castle Garrenbrigg I imaging is the 3rd strongest castle, especially since it's in amulet titan. Must have barely missed the mark

Number 4 was my pick for number 1. I assumed oko got banned to quickly and I just always forget about lands

4:46 once upon a time was also banned in pioneer I'm pretty sure because during the beginning of the format when we were trying to figure out what was broken once upon a time was banned due to making creature based decks way too consistent even in pioneer if I am wrong someone let me know and I'm sorry if that's the case

LOL I had Fabled Passage sitting in my binder till my buddy was like, ''That card is crazy good, put it in your landfall Korvold deck'' Me: I guess I'll try 2 games later looping the Fabled Passage with land recurrence effects and getting the untapped land Me: What a great card Fabled Passage also works like fetches letting you get priority and get untapped land for the spell :P

Lands are great, fabled passage and prismatic vista are awesome cards.

I'd be interested to see what positions 11-20 look like; as there's so much widely played stuff that *didn't* make the list, such as mystical dispute, drown in the loch, emry, fires, inkeeper, etc

Colour breakdown of the 12 cards on this list (counting lands as the colour of mana they produce) : White - 0 Blue - 3 Black - 2 Red - 2 Green - 4 Colourless - 2 And there's a ton of powerful cards that didn't make the list, but not a single one of those is white either (most are of course green - QB, Innkeeper etc.). They really screwed the colour balance in this set!

No surprised the oven got extra points than the cat. The sac outlet should naturally have more points because other sac decks

It’s honestly insane how green was especially juiced in this set. Questing beast and Great Henge are ridiculously pushed with so much text and upside for little effort required to use. Almost Every single green rare and mythic was better than good And even the lower rarity stuff kicks. Return of the Wildspeaker, Castle Garenbrig, wicked wolf, all the ones mentioned in this video. Like holy cow.

Okay, where on Earth is Fires of Invention? I understand that it’s only really been played in standard for the most part, but it was a huge part of the format

God i love Eldraine. The lore synergy and limited is on point. Also i dont think the sets broken, i think that a couple cards are broken and the rest consistently strong and people jumped on the band wagon. I mean this sets neither mirrodin nor urzas saga, you know what i mean. Its just a strong set with like 4-5 bannable cards

This is where his points system doesn't do certain cards justice, especially Oko. Rule number one of powerful cards, if it got banned it was probably too powerful.

The castles; I just figured it out. There'll CASTLE so you need solid ground to BUILD THEM ON TOP OFF! So 8f you play them first, you need to SET THE FONDATIONS and then you can use it on your next turn. BUT, if you already have a land card PREPARED for it, you essentially just build a building on top of that land.

I found it weird how there's a card in reference to the "lady of the lake" but not the famous sword "Excalibur". Hopefully we revisit the plane to see the sword in the stone.

Also anyone with a brain could have see a the design step that Okos +1 should have been a +0 at WORST. (I honestly agree with arenas errata to it being a -1).
