Dev, I am also really excited to play with Nightmare Shepherd. I think Woe Strider could be a decent pairing for giving more control over when things die, but of course might be best in a rakdos or Mardu aristocrats shell. I'm determined to have Mono Black devotion be my first standard deck I buy in paper since about 2015. Cheers.
I think the frustrating part with Elspeth is that the deck you want her in, doesn't really put cards in the graveyard, so effectively she isn't a planeswalker you can reanimate, because you'd rarely ever have the option to.
Just play Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner turn 2, drop Nyx Lotus turn 3, untap with Kiora's ability and start dropping Nyxbloom turn 4 for just absurd mana ramp.
Thassa is stupid good and will take over the format. Double proccing Gary the turn you play it, and every turn thereafter and tap their best creature will win a lot of games
Jacob Smith no, Nissa doesn’t change the amount of mana your lands produce, she adds additional mana when you tap lands for mana. So Nyxbloom makes your forests tap for 3 and Nissa adds 1.
I disagree with the list highly, but its your opinion, so it’s fine to disagree. I would likr to ask though why do you not like ashiok more, esper hero with her, t3f, cerberus doggo, elite guard mage, and stuff like that will be insane, or straight up esper control with her and elspeth both of which look really good. I doubt the simic titan makes it into the ramp decks to begin with, the 3 drop that let’s you play an additional land per turn is far better for the ramp decks, uro seems highly overrated, I think there will even be a good chance of allot of other good decks out of this. I understand I may end up very wrong, but since spoilers have ended I’ve played somewhere around 100 matches of magic with friends where we are testing with new cards we proxied them.
First time on your channel, loved your video mate. Subbed. Glad you mentioned Shadowspear. I have that used in my cube and wow. Its freaking insane right now!
Some nice cards here, cooking up some ideas baby. Started playing last year....around the same time started watching your vids. YOU'RE MAKING ME A BETTER PLAYER, Thanks brotha, I appreciate you
Why can't they ban Ballista NOT Heliod, Ballista is the problem in many formats...Why is Ballista a sacred cow? Just because a few pros deem Hexproof and Lifelink cheating (the don't play green or white) but they like Ballista as a win condition so it's fair seems weird to me. The Emperor's new clothes...
13:57 lava coil doesn't kill any of the gods because they have 4> toughness???? It wouldn't kill them even if they had 1 toughness! (Lava coil exiles only if they would die to those 4 damage, and indestructible makes then unable to die from that)
22:00 "Oh, by the way, it also works with Dread Presence. That's pretty cheeky but it could be a real deck!" Yes, Dev, yes it absolutely could be a real deck because it IS a real deck in Modern called Scapeshift and Druid of Ilysian Grove is absolutely going to be played in Scapeshift, especially my preferred variation which is Titanshift. How many other cards in this list can you say are going to become a staple of a Modern archetype?
Yeah, it feels like everyone's been obsessing over that (and to a lesser extent, Lazav's) interaction basically since the titans were revealed. I personally don't put much value in it yet due to how situational the combo appears and the fact that you need to splash white into these otherwise dual (or even 3) color decks to make it work, but it is certainly interesting and has the potential to be insanely broken depending on how the format shapes up. I'm not sure how well Mardu colors will work with Kroxa, but Bant has been a pretty damn popular variant of Simic for a while now, so Uro is more than a little concerning. On that note, I desperately hope something else comes along that makes Simic not broken this time around. I absolutely adore the color combination, especially now with the added power of Uro's life gain and ability to recur himself, and just want to have fun with a consistent deck that controls its own mana base to play huge, satisfying cards without feeling like an asshole anymore. Ramping with Nissa into a 10/10 Krasis that tells counterspell decks to fuck right off is so satisfying and I don't want to see them go, but I also don't want them ruining yet ANOTHER format (especially considering how insanely awesome Theros has the potential to be. Eldraine seemed kinda meh from the get go, but I can't stop obsessing over practically every rare and mythic in this set).
Dev, you are the man! My honorable mention vote goes to Hydra’s growth. Seems pretty broken with like Voracious Hydra or something that’s main body is counters to begin with.
Great video bro, thank you! Thoguh, Purphoros is not a Sneak Attack effect since it doesnt provide HASTE. So... putting Illharg with Purphoros' ability would't do anything. I think it is not that broken. Putting Drakuseth might be powerful, but not broken since you have to pay the mana cost of Purphoros plus the ability. Anyway, my two cents. Great video. This is my first look at these cards and it has been a pleasure to hear you.
Dev...!..I'm a real person and YOU'RE the best...!but u gotta hear this....... Usually dont buy mtg retail due to tampering..ordering boxes on Ebay is usually where I'm at But was out of my mind w anticipation and could not wait... Bought 36 boosters against my better judgement...I got 2 UROs.....but only 1 Thirst 4 Meaning...W....T.....F....?
No Idyllic Tutor? Underworld Breach reminds me of Past in Flames also. Thryx looks so fun Woe strider is ridiculous because of that line of text: ETB 0/1 Goat token! LOL ;P I like how Erebos and Nightmare Shepherd can stack triggers with Woe strider Elspeth conquers death and Kiora Bests the Sea God seem nuts for a enchanter control strategy Shatter the sky with indestructible creature over 4 power means you get a card and keep your creature and wipe the board LOL Nyxbloom Ancient=wtf Purphoros is absurd in a set with escape Dryad of the Illysian grove, LOL that art, this card is going to be a eternal EDH staple Klothys, I still think it should be Naya Shadowspear: Insane, but very simple design that comes off as lets just put a bunch of keywords on a card for a low cost. I would've loved to see a more interesting design :P Dream Trawler/Troller is going to be awesome in my Azorius fliers
I liked the cards on your list. Some uncommons i felt could have made the list : Acolyte of affliction(eternal witness for black/green commanders?)..Minion's Return(Flash in-destroy-creature steal, seems good)..honorable mentions : Rise to Glory(value reanimate)/Mire Triton(I dunno low mana merfolk zombie deathtouch and mill yourself seems good in right deck) and finally Mirror Shield: hexproof artifact enablers have always been good commander staples)....obviously I am a commander main MTG player
I've been playing mono-blue tempo with Nadir Kraken and the early winrate is over 80%. Once you drop it on 3, you can easily win just by stocking the rest of your deck with draw and counter cards (14 counters, 5 bounces, and 9 draw effects). Here is the list--it only costs 3 mythic and 11 rare: aetherhub.com/Deck/Public/207583
Dev, you should 100% do an MTG podcast or at least feature your expertise on some good ones (Allied Strategies, Limited Resources, GLHF, Common Knowledge, etc.)
I like to resolve... spells! [obvious cut for rant] Also, I'd like to see Elspeth Conquers Death go nuts, since it was my Promo. Pulled an Uro from my prize packs though, so who cares?!
I fail to see how Underworld Breach is on this list, let alone number two. The "remove three cards" cost restriction is so high it makes it hardly an impactful card in any format, let alone in Standard where impactful cards are not cheap at all. Comparison with Yawgmoth's Will is very inapproriate and misleading, IMO. Inappropriate, because of cards YW had to work with - mainly Dark Ritual and cheap spells in his standard format, and in Vintage it has quick mana, cheap cantrips and Storm mechanic. And misleading, because "it costs one mana less than YW!" actually says nothing because that "exile three cards" additional cost is very very punishing and because of that, doesn't compare with YW at all.
Great Video Dev! I think another good idea for a video would be the top 5-10 commons and uncommon from a set. Agonizing Remorse and Wolfwillow Haven seem like uncommons that deserve some discussion, for example.
Everyone seems to be underestimating Ash boy. Black green will be so strong in this set. I think Ash boy bringing Phrexian back he already made possible to bring back the oil. 😋 Also new lotus take my money!!!!!
I played the 4 drop Elspeth in the deck event and proxied in playtest in tabletop testing and this card does a ton of work and in selesnya with enough Mana in a mid-range style it's totally able to take over games and can even help you come behind very well. All you keyboard trolls can shove it! Lol. But seriously, In every situation there's always an answer for anything so all the comments about assassin's trophy or spark harvest are, though true and obvious, aren't not really as strong of a rebuttal. Those cards existed before and that didn't stop 3-fari from being a great card. not every deck you play is always going to haveremoval, not every deck you play has an answer sitting there ready to go and even if it does if I can knock 2 3 4 cars out of somebody's hand while consistently building my board state I'm all for that. So if you consider it on an average board state in an average situation on a Four drop, this car does its job well and consistently and it's really hard to get rid of without exile removal. it's not a popular statement but selesnya planeswalkers is something on my short list of decks I plan on building first when the new set drops for official standard play. Rant over Come and get it newbs
In case anyone was wondering why Nyxbloom Ancient + Nissa doesn't produce 6 mana from forests it's because Nissa adds the extra G, not the forest itself. So Nyxbloom says this forest produces 3Xmana and then Nissa says a forest was tapped for mana so here's an extra G.
Of the cards i bought polukranos and i'm super happy with it powerfull and fun to play people uninmpressed don't know what they say once i start fighting with him they beg for mercy. Another thing i have 2 mythic wild cards where should i waste them i'm thinking elspeth for tokens and br kroxa for aristocrats looks decent
I think Polukranos is bad. They don't even have to remove it all they have to do is chump block and it becomes tiny. If you use the ability it becomes tiny. Only making it unblockable/indestructible makes it good imo.
I think Uro is good but overrated. It is good on turn 3 but it is hard to escape. I think some poeple evaluate Uro by the fact that it escapes on turn 4, but I just don't see how you can do it in the simic colors where it is rather hard to pile up your graveyard quickly. I think Uro escapes on turn 5 if your lucky or even later so, it is a great effect but it might be sketchy to put in play.
As far as Standard side board goes, Mystic Repeal could be in every green deck. Instant speed 1 mana pseudo removal for Gods could be an honorable mention
Klothys isn't a great magic card. I'm pretty confident it'll see some experimentation and never see the light of dawn again thereafter. Nylea hasn't impressed me either. It's honestly not great against sweepers because it inevitably reverts back to being a non-creature. And the card advantage effect is too pricey, unreliable and slow. Honestly, I even think the Orzhov Box Topper is better. Cards like Thassa and especially Aphemia have proven really great so far, in my opinion. Much better than a something like Elsbeth. She looks bad even when she isn't answered, and she looks ridiculously bad when played before QB.
I believe the most powerful ability of a god card isn’t the creature part I mean a creature of medium power that can’t be killed by normal damage ways is great, but the passive ability of each one is what makes the card
personally don't understand why you picked those cards- there's some that are literally better versions of some of the ones you picked in this exact set
I got the anje black red commander deck and I've added plenty more stuff but to me the 3 drop anje is a broken card for commander. In my eyes cause it does so much
nightmare shepherd allows you to sac something you steal for a turn with a red card , exile it and put a copy of it on the bord , and thats my plan so far for theros
