In this video I’ll be comparing a cheap and expensive (MTM Hydro SGS35) quick release pressure washer short (stubby) gun.
I’m demoing both of these options using a Karcher K4 and am taking a look at the features, build quality and performance to see if the more expensive one is worth it for car detailing/ cleaning.
Both of these options were purchased by myself. Here are affiliate links to both products. If you make a purchase after clicking the link, then I may receive a commission at no additional cost to you. I also have an affiliated discount code for In2Detailing.
*In2Detailing Discount Code: ACHQ10

MJJC Foam Cannon Pro: www.in2detailing.co.uk/produc...
MTM PF22.2 Foam Cannon: www.in2detailing.co.uk/produc...
In the US, the closest equivalent options are the MTM Hydro SGS28 and SGS35 Acqualine. The SGS35 Acqualine has blue food grade housing. The SGS28 has a slightly lower max pressure/ flow rate specification and is a bit lighter and slimmer. Make sure it has the “S” after “SG” as this stands for the swivel. The SG28 and SG35 do not have the swivel function.

I did similar and got the in2detailling one about 3 years ago. Loved it overall and found the swivel based very free flowing. Swapped for a MTM just because my hands as I’ve got older ache sometimes. It’s a totally different beast in terms of trigger ease. However found the swivel not easy so took it to pieces and rebuilt it with some PTFE tape and a bit of lube and now it fantastic I’d take the cheaper all day long if I was younger or a weekend warrior. It’s over 50% cheaper in price so bit of a no brainer tbh

When I started doing my car on a regular basis, I bought a cheap quick release gun on Amazon that also came with the karcher hose adapter. All I needed was the swivel joint, as I'd already bought a new anti kink hose to replace the absolutely pathetic hose you get with the K2. Apart from the new hose, which I did spend a few quid on, it's all cheap and cheerful, been going about 2 years or so with no problems whatsoever and I've bought quite a few quick release accessories along the way. Also have the karcher adapter so I can still the dirt blaster attachment without using the karcher gun. It's all good. :-D

Great comparison Heather. I looked at the SGS35 for my Nilfisk, but couldn't justify the price. I also found availability of these guns a problem when I bought one last year. After a while searching, I eventually settled on the MTM Hydro Astra. Halfway in price between some of the budget guns and the SGS35. Excellent build quality and comfortable to use. Love this video, not seen a comparison of the stubby guns on any of the other major detailing channels on YT, also I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while but I still consider it a ‘nice to have’ against other products I’m prioritising currently. One slightly observation though, brass like-for-like has better corrosion resistance than stainless steel. Will last over 100 years, it will go green/blue colour after a while though which is the zinc reaction but it’s not corrosion. In this scenario they’re using stainless steel for cosmetic and weight purposes. Brass does cost less as well.

@philgornall
@philgornall Год назад
@@pantac4493 yeah it’s a fair point, it’s softer so no doubt constant reconnections warp the fitting over time. I was only pointing out that it certainly won’t corrode within the timescales of use. There’s a reason brass still used as the premium type of connection in bathrooms etc. but the point there is they’re rarely touched, as you’ve pointed out.
@pantac4493
@pantac4493 Год назад
@@philgornall yeah don’t intend to change out the brass quick connects anytime soon unless it becomes a bigger problem, the output of the gun is where I like having stainless the most because of changing out nozzles and accessories. Thank you! Unfortunately that’s the downside that there’s no adjustability on either of these two guns. I know some people who use a K7 with them both though without any trouble, probs just need to be a bit more careful with how close you hold it to the car

Good comparison. Question: before buying a trigger/short sprayer, what's it like when you connect a foam to it that's full of soap? Too heavy? Right now, I'm pulling the trigger and holding the wand on a wand type sprayer with foam cannon attached. I dont want to spend money and make my job harder. Thanks, Heather.
@AutoCareHQ
@AutoCareHQ Год назад
Thanks Kim. When it's completely full I can hold it with one hand and it doesn't usually get achy as I can manage until it starts to dispense and gets lighter. It'll definitely be easier than using a longer lance though where you have to use two hands

I have the MTM28 with a MTM 40° degree tip that has a blue rubber guard dam thing cost $65 Australian just for the tip So i will be buying the normal one's, but i'm yet to use it. The gun and pressure washer fitting set me back $220 Australian dollars.

@Bull1the1Great
@Bull1the1Great Год назад
I am always reluctant, or say it , scared to get stubby gun because of the warning that it might mess with the pressure water motor. You are changing the flow rate dynamics after all. I have a karcher K5 and the handle is very stiff, plus , swivel would help a lot with hose kinking ...

I've been using mine for quite a long time and never had any motor issues. The max flow rate of the gun massively exceeds the flow rate of the pressure washer

Hi Heather , I’m going to go for the MTM SGS35. I buy from in2detailing quite regularly. I use a Karcher K2 . Am I correct in saying that no one sells the quick release fitting along with the gun? Do I have to purchase that separately? . It’s the MJJC foam canon I’ll be using along with it. Always enjoy your videos. Great work. Just about to give mine the full works as Spring is almost upon us!
@AutoCareHQ
@AutoCareHQ Год назад
Hi David, the quick release gun will come with a 1/4" quick release adapter to fit onto the foam cannon but the MJJC is a little different as it has a different adapter which has compatible pressure washer fitting glued into it. It is possible to get a couple of spanners to snap the glue and release the Karcher fitting so you can screw the new 1/4" adapter in but it's not very easy to do it. The easier option is probs just to get a new adapter from from In2Detailing (www.in2detailing.co.uk/products/mjjc-foam-lance-cannon-pro-replacement-adaptor?ghref=3377%3A53788) with the 1/4 adapter already on it. Hope that makes sense!

What is the difference between SGS35 UK and SGS28 US? It looks like SGS35 UK has higher PSI rating (5075) compared to SGS28 US (4075) - SGS35 exclusive to UK? SGS35 UK (Black) has the same specs of SGS35 Aqualine (Blue). I am confused.

Pretty sure brass does not corrode. It is softer than SS so might mare or take damage with use. Brass is used for water and hydraulic fittings all the time because it doesn’t corrode. The corrosion you see on the old gun is probably from a plated washer or some between the brass and stainless that is starting to rust. Could be wrong though.
@AutoCareHQ
@AutoCareHQ Год назад
It doesn’t corrode in the same way as something like iron which rusts and loses integrity. It will just start to get those green tarnish spots over time when it oxidises or is exposed to water. It’s not a massive issue performance wise unless it really starts to gunk up the quick release collar, it just doesn’t look very nice!
