Issue: connecting the AIBump2d (or 3d) out value into the normal value of the bump map doesn't create cool breakup as demo'd. Solution: Make sure that you are plugged into the "normal camera" instead of the "normal" input of the AIAmbientOcclusion node. You can right click hold the node and select "show all attributes" to find it. Struggled with that one for a little while!

Hey, Arvid... so, i actually work with cutting gem stones, and a little thing i thought you might find interesting..... the rainbow sheen you see on those blue quartz is from gold..... the blue quartz is called aqua aura, and what it is is a process of spraying gold onto quartz and it fusing with the surface creating the coloring. they use all kinds of metals to get different color effects. but that specifically is what is causing the rainbow on the surface..... quartz does however cause prisms inside the stone itself the way it bends light. but the surface is a metal infusing process.

so, that effect isnt natural and wouldnt be seen in raw quartz crystal.

in solidangle documentation they describe Po like shading position in object-space, not world-space. is that correct? I get a little confused

Is there anyone following with Houdini/Arnold? I cannot figure out bump. I'm not getting result when I plug bump vector to normal and of course there is not normal camera thing. if someone knows what to do, please share.

Hi Arvid! I love your tutorials and I was wondering if you’d do a tutorial on how to shade a dirty finger printed mirror, I looked around for hours but I couldn’t find anything helpful so I was wondering if you’d ever do one perhaps!

So im using Maya 2023 with MtoA 5.2.1.1 and when i try to connect the aiAmbientOcclusion to AiBump2d then to Normal Camera it doesn't give me a result. Has anyone else had this issue?

how do you get the Id 1,2 and so forth on your aiStandardSurface ? Beacse I'm following along to this tutorial but I don't know where to plug in my occlusion nodes now

hes just using the id slots in order to use isolate selected in the render view, you can plug them into most slots on the shader and it will work :), In the end, all the ones in this video go into the normal camera anyway

george coleclough thanks for the help, but how do you add the ID slots into the standard surface shader. I don't know how to add them, there isn't anything online that I could find that would help me.

right click the StandardSurface node. Then click the edit custom attribute button. From there you will see a list of attributes you can reveal in the main node. Hope that makes sense.

Sandeep tuladhar are you using an older version of Arnold. I would try to get the latest version from solid angles website. If youre up to date chances are you just missed it. Scroll down and you should see id slots 1-8

First of all, thank you for this tutorial, it's really helping me a lot. I have a question, if do my crystal with a displacement map from zbrush (as i want it to be a part of a big scene and there's multiple crystals so i cant bring the high poly), when i setup the displacement in maya, the object get smoothed when switch the subdivision type to catclark in the arnold part of the shape node, so i lose all the hard edges and my crystal get all roundish. I don't know how to solve that issue at all. Any suggestion ?

i just started learn Maya and now i understand why that series is so important. 2 questions: 1) Could you show final product of particular tutorial during introduction - miniature is to small ? 2) There was any video tutorial about converting or change blender shader node into arnold shaders ?

A comentary that I have is about sculpt the crystal in Zbrush and export a displacement. I tried this way and the displacement give some problem, when you divide with smooth, the hard corners present some problem in the displacement, because in this map, appears a white areas that affect in the displacment when you applies and thar cornes are inflated in the render. Actually, the best solution is use a morph target al least, and re import the crystal obj, and use the morth brush to recover the deformation for sculpt n the lowest subdiv. if anyone discove a best way to get a clean displacement, please, tell me.

Thank you for the great tutorials. They have helped me a lot. I have a question but it's not directly related to Arnold. I am trying to create scene with lot of vegetation and I am planning to use paint effects. The vegetation will have a turbulent force to simulate wind. I plan to use MASH to populate the scene. My question is, is there a way to bake this paint effect animation to geometry, and possibly convert it to Arnold stand-ins and use in MASH? I tried just converting paint effects to polygon but then my scene gets too heavy for my PC to handle. Or is there a different way to approach this? I would really appreciate any help/ suggestion you can give.

Great tutorial! Exactly what I was looking for I think. But... I get stuck at the beginning. When I plug the AO to ID1 it renders black. Looking at your scene graph I guess you have some kind of IBL going on. Could you point to the basic scene setup or drop a few lines about how you setup the scene? Thanks!

Ok, I got past this point. My problem was that I did not understand the "render isolated" feature. But I clearly need to go deeper into Arnold before I can keep up with this...

Thanks for this. Just updated my version of Arnold to 5.1 and for the ambient occlusion node I cant seem to get any feedback if I attach the noise parameter to the normal node, even after adding the bump 2d. Could this be a bug on my end?

Yea. Found the problem. I was attaching the node to the normal instead of the normal camera. Forgotten to unhide the attributes. I appreciate a lot the tutorials man. More life!

Yes - exception would be the projection setup. Which is DCC dependant.
