MTV Original Broadcast 8/1/1981

I do not own the rights to this video. It is owned by MTV. I am simply posting this for people to see how great MTV was and for you to see how it all started.
On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken by John Lack, and played over footage of the launch of Apollo 11. Those words were immediately followed by the original MTV theme song, a crunching classical tune composed by Jonathan Elias and John Petersen, playing over photos of the Apollo 11 moon landing, with the flag featuring MTV's logo changing various colors, textures, and designs.

but aren't reality tv stars also technically video stars by definition?
@SpaceGuru5
@SpaceGuru5 9 лет назад
By video star, I mean music video star. It's in reference to "video killed the radio star," which basically means that, because of the launch of MTV, music videos became the #1 way to discover music instead of the radio.
@SpaceGuru5
@SpaceGuru5 9 лет назад
Even better is the fact that, upon the dawn of TV in the late 1940s, TV became the preferred viewing device instead of the radio. Why just listen to something happen when you can see it happen for yourself? The longing for convenience has been a part of humanity since the dawn of humanity.

Why? cable TV is dead, everybody's always complaining for MTV to go back to this. That's why RU-vid exist so you can watch any video you want at any time you don't have to wait hours for your favorite video to play. And people don't understand that the bigger MTV got, the more money record labels were demanding for their video to be play on there, so it just became cheaper for MTV to produce their own shows, when you get shows like the real world and singled out and whatever else they did I don't remember. And I don't think people would want to hear 24 hours of the crap they have today. So it's a blessing that we don't have cardi b and Nicki Minaj shoved down our throat

@@no_stick_drummer2735 It is not the same. Instant gratification is THE THING now. MTV was a way to discover new music and when your video DID appear, it was worth the wait.

I had just turned 17 and was a senior in HS. I remember sitting there with some friends waiting for them to start and then we saw what the video shows and how we were all blown away by this new music medium and how everyone would rush home from school to turn on the TV to channel 26,if i remember correctly. It was literally music 24/7/365. Mark Goodman was one of the DJs at 95.5 WPLJ in NYC that we used to listen to alot,as it was the biggest rock station in the area at the time n now we all new what he looked like and finally knew why he left radio. MTV is nothing like it was. Its unfortunate that todays generation couldn't see it in its heyday.

Nope. They excluded Famous Black Artists. Let's be clear! Even Elvis never excluded Blacks. MTV was racists and nobody called them out except Rick James and a few others. I respect those DJs as pioneers of a show format that is now automated. Sending them to Cleveland is a reach. They excluded EWF and Rick James for years on MTV. Nobody was bigger than those acts in 1981 on tours.

IT was this wide huge window being opened followed by a flood of teenagers who had this great new vibe- what they listened to , what they wore, how they did their hair etc ! It was a generation of happy fun go lucky times where when we watched our fave videos we could go conquer the world in a positive way! We learned music was spirit for the soul. MTV used to be good when they actually played back to back music videos. Now I skip it and watch RU-vid! Thanks RU-vid! You’re the greatest!

I’ll never forget it. It changed all of our lives and we were never the same. It’s all we talked about and thought about. Couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch videos and find out what new videos they were playing. I’m lost in nostalgia.

MTV 2014: "Welcome to MTV, the only tv station specifically titled "music television" that doesn't actually play music. Come enjoy all of the worst reality shows so you and your friends can comment and laugh about how stupid people are even though you live a very similar existence."

ajs1031 MTV was amazing until the mid 90s. The end of 120 Minutes, Headbanger's Ball, Yo! MTV Raps and MTV News (as its own show) signaled the end of an era. I was amazed that Kurt Loder (a former Rolling Stone magazine editor) was able to stay on as long as he did. I wish Kurt was still on the air somewhere.

FauxReal Actually it was kinda cool to have Yo! MTV Raps. It legitimized hiphop to mainstream America (not that it needed it really, but the show helped its growth). I will admit though that MTV had its peak in the 90s.

cqtaylor Yeah, every single one of the shows I mention was cool to have on MTV. The music shows I mentioned dug deep to find new good music in those genres. They weren't trying to create hits thin air by force feeding them to so much.

A more aptly perfect descriptive explanation of why really good terrestrial broadcast radio does NOT exist en masse in 2014/15 has yet to be written!

Born late 1985. I grew up watching 80s VHS rentals and watching Nickelodeon and Disney Channel's rebroadcasts of 80s cartoons and TV shows, so I've been fascinated with the decade all my life.

In 1983 I visited my cousin in Los Angeles before heading overseas for deployment. While visiting him,I recorded 8 hours of MTV,even editing out the commercials and then brought the VHS tape with me when I left. I had lent the tape to one of my co-workers on base and his wife was looking for a blank tape to record one of her shows with and grabbed my tape and recorded over my precious 8 hour MTV recording. True story.

Hiraaku I don't wanna see The Hills, Punkd, Pimp My Ride, The Real World or the new reboot of Beavis And Butthead. I noticed that's some of the crap they're showing. I want it COMPLETELY authentic. As if we turned the tv on in the 80s and are watching MTV the way it was then. The shows I just mentioned are basically what lead to the travesty MTV has become.
