Pandemonium reigns as everyone from the game officials to the television announcers try to figure out what happened to allow Colorado to score a controversial "win" over Missouri in 1990. Watch as high school math teacher and head referee J.C. Louderback can't remember how to count to 4 which opens the door for CU to score the game-winning TD on a 5th down as time expires. CU goes on to split the 1990 Mythical National Championship with Georgia Tech.

the only good thing that happened from this game is that the entire officiating crew was barred from officiating indefinitely

You can see the coach telling the ref the the 4 previous plays and then saying "that's the bottom line" at 4:58

Let me make another point: my father was a football official, and he could not figure out how this happened because there are TWO officials that keep track of the downs, one with a clicker (like a baseball ump) and the guy with the sign. I later read it was because the guy with the clicker decided the guy with the sign was right. I also read where Colorado's center told Charles Johnson they didn't have enough downs to run twice and spike.

One announcer did, but he wasn't sure about it. He assumed the ref knew his job.

Don't blame Louderback. Blame the staff in charge of the down marker

Sorriest national champions in my lifetime! A loss and tie, plus 2 gift wins on 5th down and phantom flag on rockets punt return in the orange bowl! Realistically a 8-3-1 team in todays game.

I was there that day, low in the stands at about the opposite goal line, and I knew the game was over as soon as the ball was spiked. I ran from the stands onto the field and made my way to the Mizzou bench, where by this time the 5th down had been run, and some of the players I knew asked what was going on, and I explained that CU had used 5 downs. At about that time the head ref came over (you can see him walk by the AD, Joe Castiglione) and got on the phone behind the bench - in this video you can just see me in the white shirt jumping up and down in the right corner at the 2:49 mark. To my recollection I was screaming at the ref that they had 5 downs. Then the ref gets on the phone, and in my head he's calling up to the press box, and they're going to get this straightened out. At the 3:09 mark, I'm in front of the ref and demonstrating that the ball was spiked on 4th down. But alas, my graphic analysis apparently had no bearing. Crazy game, funny to find this video out here.

Ha! Found this in another article - the Referee apparently never reached anyone on the phone. He just stood there with the phone to his ear ignoring me and my analysis. "Louderback went to a sideline phone to call the Big Eight observer in the press box, but nobody answered because the observer had been on an elevator to the field during the whole five-down sequence. The liaison to the TV booth was no help, either, because the broadcast was over and he had packed up his headset. Louderback was on his own. The ref never called the press box because he says it wasn't protocol. But if he had, he would've received some colorful responses. Writers and sports information directors seemed to be on top of the mistake; Colorado's Dave Plati had shouted an F-bomb when Johnson spiked the ball on the real fourth down. And when Buffaloes offensive coordinator Gerry DiNardo stopped by the CU radio booth, where Plati was sitting, the coach asked, "How many plays did we just run there?" "I think five," Plati said."

Its amazing to think that this missed call, plus the kicked ball incident that lost MU a game to NU in 97, ended up benefitting the other team in both years in that they eventually shared a national championship. I can see how the "kicked ball" didn't get called but how CU got the extra down is beyond me. And how long do you think they would have reviewed that last play in today's game with instant replay?
@54Snickers
@54Snickers 14 лет назад
The coaches not knowing is the biggest "sin." The guy or gal doing the play-by-play transcription in the pressbox sure as hell knew. Why he/she didn't yell at someone to run up to the box where the Mizzou coaches were, and tell them that the refs and chain gang lost track of the downs is something I'll always wonder. I'll have to admit that I was at that game and didn't pick up on it.

Lets just say hypothetically there was no error on the clock, down marker, and officials and the downs were properly counted. Do you think that CU would have spiked the ball on 4th down? heck i doubt CU would have run the ball on 3rd down. Colorado was in the same situation earlier in the year against Stanford. On 3rd down CU threw the ball, and on 4th down they ran it and then scored for the win. Colorado was duped as well. So to say that had they done their job it would be a different outcome is tough to say; because people forget situational football. Would CU have scored? we dont know, but its not as black and white as people make it out to be.

+Shay Hicks ABSOLUTELY right Shay...only possibly some moron from "Nebraska" would spike the ball on purpose on 4th down. I feel bad for Missouri but hey, it wasn't CU's fault. Oh and BTW...Huck The Fuskers...nebraska becomes the media darlings by playing their yearly tough schedule against the likes of "Pacific" and "Troy State" among others while in the McCartney era CU always had one of the toughest non conference schedules...

Shay Hicks Let's just say we're able to watch 5th down on RU-vid & clearly see that the Colorado QB didn't get in on 5th down, then we could easily conclude Missouri got screwed by the referees. I have no dog in this I'm not a fan of either team, so this neutral football fan's verdict is The referees were crooked as hell. Missouri should put this down as a victory in their personal records & stats because they won the game in truth.

@AmericanRuffian This would never happen today with replay. It didn't exist back then. ESPN did a show recently about it - and while it's still bad, it's somewhat understandable. Fifth downs have happened something like 5 or 6 times in NCAA history - but only 2 are remembered. The 1940 case was because the team forfeited when it had a long losing streak. If Colorado had been 2-8 in 1990, nobody but Mizzou fans would even remember this. But it played a major role in the national champion crowning

Was this footage broadcast live on the tv telecast? Or is this the raw truck feed after the network had already signed off and the announcers kept talking just in case? I've seen the telecast of the game but never saw this part. In the telecast I saw, there was never any acknowledgement of the 5th down and they were done less than a minute after the questionable QB sneak score.
@debbiecooper9407

This was a recording of the broadcast as it was shown in Missouri (Kansas City). The resolution is poor because the recording was made on VHS tape with the VCR set to LP (long play) mode. I think that there was one video feed and two different broadcast teams; one for Colorado TV affiliates and the other for Missouri affiliates. It may be that the Colorado affiliates cut from the video feed and ended the broadcast of the game while the Missouri affiliates and the Missouri broadcast team stayed with the telecast.

This blunder happened right in front of the Big Eight commissioner. Not the best time to officiate a game that poorly.
@54Snickers

@cdzmo1972 - It is an amzing coincidence, and incredible "good luck" for both CU and NU. There is no way something like this would happen today. The guys in the replay booth would have "buzzed" the referee on the field and informed him of the down situation. Back in 1990, the only way the head referee could communicate with the press box was through a telephone set up on the sidelines, which you see in this video.

You know what's funny? The same CU fans who pass this off as a technicality would be LIVID if that clip hadn't been called to save them from Rocket in the Orange Bowl. Which begs this question: does any time dumb enough to punt to the fastest player of all-time with the title on the line even deserve consideration as a number one?

Not a good time to have an officials error with the Big 12 commissioner there. I can only imagine what his feelings were. What gets me is how the line judge determine if the ball crossed the goal line. To me the officials just lost control of everything in the final sequence.
@scooper4981
@scooper4981 8 лет назад
+Johnathan Jenkins RE: The line judge making the call -- he waited for several seconds after the play was over to make the TD call, which was way too late. The delay in making the call allowed the CU QB, who was flat on his back short of the goal, to push with one leg, scoot on his back, then lift the ball from his chest over the goal line. You can see that action at the 1:14 mark of the video.

@@scooper4981 Watch the back angle. He stretches the ball out just as his backside hits the ground. The ball only has to break the front plane of the goal for a touchdown to be scored. This call certainly would not have been overturned by instant replay.

If it wasn't for all the controversy, the 1990 Colorado team would've been forgotten. They played the toughest schedule in the country, won 3 straight B8 Titles (89-91), and were the best team in the country. Missouri wasn't good, and their field was worse. CU would've beaten them by 50 on a better field.

@Bradical26 That's true. This entire thing cries for perspective and a little less emotion. CU would not have downed the ball had they known it was really 4th down. Jay Leewenburg did know but was told to play center and keep his mouth shut. Mizzou fans are rightfully upset but let's also note that CU would not have run the same sequence had they known it. Therefore, it is pure conjecture who would have won had it played out right.
@shayhicks7682
@shayhicks7682 6 лет назад
they stopped the clock because missouri players wouldnt get off of Bieniemy hoping to prevent a spot of the ball so CU wouldnt be able run another play. So then as soon as they spotted the ball they ran the clock again.

@Bradical26 That's up for debate. Sorenson has CU with the #8 schedule and Ga Tech with #13. That's hardly a major difference. And let's not forget - CU had a loss and Tech didn't. The only reason CU got the nod was because - are you ready - they started the year #8 while Tech was unranked. I'm not knocking CU; I like them. But that whole thing stunk. To be fair time has changed my perspective but in light of neither team playing each other a split national title was the proper outcome.

They had to run the extra point because Missouri could have blocked and took it the other way for 2 points. Colorado could have scored a 1-point safety (Yes! a 1 point safety!) on the play so they had to run it.

Biggest load of ado about nothing. The fifth down didn't give them an extra chance to score. Also, it looks like he clearly got in the end zone. Remember the ball only has to break the front plane of the goal line. I think from the back angle, that clearly happens.

@@specialk8273 No, because he spiked it on fourth down. If they had counted the earlier spike, they would not have spiked it on fourth down. After Bienemy was stopped on third down, the Buffs should have had one more chance to score. A spike is not a chance to score
