This video of a session from yesterday with Yodkhunpon was so good, and so applicable I just had to share it with everyone. He's one of my favorite legends to work with and truly inspiring. He has a gentleness that is all his own which hides a beautiful and terrible violence of attack. This is part of a much longer session, probably and hour and twenty minutes that I'll be putting up in my Patreon Muay Thai Library in a few months, but for now this is just an awesome clip that works all on its own.
It's a basic orthodox vs orthodox walkdown attack, using walk forward knees and kicks to the left side, and a powerful right elbow. He says you could fight an entire fight like this. It felt great to learn, hope you enjoy!
If you'd like to support and join my Muay Thai Library on Patreon the suggested pledge is $5. You can see everything that is already in it. Because of the support I've been getting it continually growing with new long-form videos every month.
All Muay Thai Library project videos are now shot in 1080i 50p HD, so if you have a fast connection make sure you set it to the highest setting.

This lady will become the encyclopedia of Mauy Thai. She will be the most sought after Mauy Thai trainer. She needs to be open to training MMA fighters. That’s where most of her students will come from.

I feel like MMA fighters might fall into a dangerous pattern if learning from Thai trainers specifically, because the upright stance and most defensive logic from Thailand can start falling apart once they’re facing shoot-heavy wrestling types, handsy grapplers etc. But yeah, if they want somewhere to polish up on Thai striking specifically, then “Sylvie Academy” is pretty much the best way to go lol

She already IS "the encyclopedia of Muay Thai"! And I love how she and her husband are both working hard to preserve the legacy of Golden Age Muay Thai because it has sadly been getting diluted and slowly morphed into something different for a while now. My goal is to go visit and/or move to Thailand and hopefully get the opportunity to train with Sylvie at some point. And if I'm even luckier, with some of her idols too. That would take care of several items on my bucket list. 🪣

you're channel is something that stands above the rest. honestly, you could make a living being an online "trainer." your content stands heads and shoulders above the rest because you show a personal twist to teaching. you have an emphasis on how YOU like to throw things, what your end goal with a technique is and how set them up.

Not just a trainer dude, a high level Nak Muay technician. Her channel really help my game, and I have been training for 5 years under thai trainers. Just see how she transits into an elbow after removing the guard WITH THE SAME HAND! Bruce Lee is an amateur compared to her.

Thank you. My left leg (and arm) is so weak that I often use my right but then get hooked to the liver. If I did this, attack with my left, then my liver hooking orthodox opponent would I think have a hard time. I wonder if there are some basic kick muscle building exercises on your channel. I am still hoping for the arrival of the 原始リスト (Genshi Risu).

Sylvie, thanks for the amazing videos. A few questions. What gym does Yodkhunpon teach out of? Also, didn't know you were from the NJ/NY area, I live in NJ as well, just curious if you're still located around here because it would be awesome to train with you!

Interestingly I was never shown the switch setup for a lead kick when training in Thailand. It was always based off of forward movement and tying sequences so that you ended in orthodox by returning your lead food to the front. There was no concept of fighting southpaw as a tactical choice either. Unclear if they restricted this as it was a lot to teach in a rapidly rotating gym or if it was the style.

Hey Sylvie! Just as a fan I wanted to note from this video: It seems that step in for the elbow is a challenge still? I know you switched over to southpaw these days, but I'm just not seeing that lead kick into elbow appearing at all! Still working on this?

You know people talk a lot about having to have a "killer instinct" to be a real competitive fighter but it can be kind of rare to see people who legitimately have that. And man even when he was just slapping you with the pads to keep your hands up there was such a palpable violence in his eyes.

Hi Sylvie, I am a short fighter (5'1") in the US, what style of fighting would you think is good for short fighters to use against taller more punch and kick heavy opponents?
@8limbsUs
@8limbsUs 6 лет назад
Patricia close range, cutting off a taller opponent's reach and leg kicking. But, I don't believe you can just pick a style off a list. You have a style in your nature that will be uncovered, like carving a figure out of the stone. So just take that suggestion as a suggestion and work out your own style as you go.

In regards to step down after the front kick - if you haven't closed the distance enough for an elbow, a right cross works just as well. It's actually insane how much power this generates. I first saw Jomthong Chuwattana doing it on pads in this video (copied the link at the respective time): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--SMn_c12TCc.html It catches people off guard. Few expect you to punch immediately after a kick, let alone it being a powerful punch. I've noticed that when I do it a couple of times in sparring and do catch my partner, they stop trying to counter my front kicks with punches and I just land free kicks from there on.

At 13:50 what is the purpose of keeping your hand on the opponent when turning? Is it to influence their movement? To control distance? Is it related to what's shown in the first minute or so of the Rambaa trailer? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-viW2WOkIjIw.html

It hides your intention, controls their guard and therefore their ability to respond, and you could apply some oressure to even dobalance them across theor own frame.
