Finally getting to fixing a few things around the shop. Replacing conveyor belts on the Challenge CMT 330 three knife book trimmer, soldering in new light sensor on the booklet maker, adjusting the lift motor on the collator tower. Machines are great when all parts of them work!

Those tape bound books are perfect for schools and universities. There are a few shops up in Berkeley, near me, next to University of California that do a ton of these things. A great little business for short term books that get use for a year or less.

I teach at a local community college in California and we had to have our print services department tape bind some books that we are using when we teach in the state prisons as they came to use as loose leaf, so needed to be bound before we could loan them to our students as we can't just but them in binders for obvious reasons. The tape binding is okay, but students had issues with the pages coming out, which was a frustration of mine, I would just tell my students to put the pages back in where the belonged so they wouldn't get lost. The books that I had that were just printed on plain copy paper that were tape bound seemed to hold up better as the pages weren't glossy.

Interesting. Tape binding certainly has a place.

That amount of glue (or lack of...) looks like this would give you single-use books unless you staple/rivet/sow the pages before binding them.
@niteman555
@niteman555 2 года назад
Regarding the lack of glue strength, I've seen people online write about just buying additional glue strips to add when doing the binding. Then there's this strange but cool dude on /diy/ who had stacks in their basement(?) filled with books bound with duck tape, some dating back to the 70s
@HenryLoenwind
@HenryLoenwind 2 года назад
@@niteman555 Stapling and then putting fabric tape over the spine to cover it and the staples was a common thing in the 70s and 80s with access to xerox machines and computer printers. I probably have such books in some boxes somewhere---I don't throw away books ever.

We also have 3 of those Fastback Tape Binder, like you said, it's a fast and cheap alternative to an perfect bound book or spiral binding. Most of the time we use it for schools.

@@justaprinter if you have to read the book a lot or it has to lay flat, it's not what you are looking for.. but most of the time the students just need something to drop of there thesis .. they won't even open the binding :)

That genius how to fix the Horizon collator. I work for a printing company that has a Horizon collator and when those parts that you fixed break we just order new ones and throw out the bad ones. But I totally get it that you are a small company and can’t always buy new parts. Very genius. I think I will talk to my boss about this. Maybe score some points lol😄. Thanks!

For hard covers, try Fastbind case makers - easy and fast for small batches! They desktop perfect binders too. Makes soft and hard covers.

For a want to be book printer would you recommend getting new low end digital press or mid-high end used one ?

i have run millions of items through my horizon collator. you can move that motor over as much as you want but if it is a tray that you use all the time, your best bet it to replace the plastic teeth with one from a tray you don't use. just the weight from the paper if you ever use something like 80# or 60# will cause it to skip every time. the suggestion of 3d printing is not a bad idea

Luckily I don't think the teeth were striped at all. It lust looked like it because of grease in the teeth. Time will tell though!

What about pulling the 3-hole piece from the black & white machine and sliding it into one of your color presses?

While I don't print/bind books, I do all of my own service on my Xerox machines. I would've thought that the 3-hole punch would be a modular unit. I.E. - If it doesn't work, then it can be removed via the front. Additionally, I would have suspected that the wiring harness that you disconnected has either a pass through or a feedback loop going through it.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 2 года назад
I don't know much about it. It's my understanding that this particular finisher can come bare bones with just a stacker. Or you can add on a punch or stitcher.

@@justaprinter Well at timestamp 2:43, what do you think all of those green knobs & levers are for? They indicate CRU's or customer replacement units. In my Xerox, there's a wiring harness connector. Simply put, it slides right in & you reboot your machine.

Hello, sir. I have a issue with vac-110a. The panel always show system error 02. Can you teach me how to fix this problem? I follow the operation manual to tune off the power. But it still not fix the issue. I look forward to your reply, thank you.

For that VAC... Looks like 3D printing could help you make replacement parts cheaply for the bin movement, just in case that one bins teeth are too rounded off long term.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 2 года назад
Good point. I think it will run fine as is but time will tell.
@HenryLoenwind
@HenryLoenwind 2 года назад
Not too sure about that. Those teeth are quite shallow and they need to hold the weight of stack of paper. The original looks like nylon on the motor side and fibre-reinforced ABS on the other. So unless you print in metal, you won't get the needed strength for it to be durable enough.

We usually perfect bind books, but use fastbacks for certain customers. Usually on very small runs. I’ve never heard of a problem with the quality. They just look very ugly and aren’t cost effective after a couple hundred.
