He became seriously ill from a series of bile duct operations in April 1953 that nearly killed him. After that, he had frequent bouts of poor physical health and psychological depression.

Those bouts of poor health as the public were told, were the fruits of serious addiction to narcotics and amphetamines - Eden was a disgraceful drug addict. People get prescribed narcotics for pain from operations. When the pain subsides, they don't need the narcotics anymore. But a few get addicted and just continue to want more and more. Eden was one of those loosers, who go doctor shopping if necessary, to get prescriptions for more and more.

Well the doctor knew he had to try some herbal medication that was only available on Jamaica at the time. And while some had similar herbal treatments he knew nothing beats the one from jamaica.

Eden was a hopeless drug addict, who presented his doctor with a classic problem faced by many GP's - prescribe what he wants or he'll get it from a pusher. The doctor in telling him to go to Jamaica and get some tropical sun was probably not about getting tropical sun, it was about getting him separated from his drugs. Eden was a classic case of drug addiction. Having experienced pain from operations, he was prescribed narcotics, and became addicted to them. He was using amphetamines as well, for no good reason. His medical issues at the time depicted in this video were of his own making. Take amphetamines - you initially feel good, then you feel down and depressed, and any minor pain seems like major pain.

@@keithammleter3824 Opiates, amphetamines and barbiturates were dished out more liberally back then, especially by Harley Street doctors. Eden would not have been seeing a GP on the NHS. Amphetamines were used freely by the armed forces during the war, and I would imagine others who were under pressure, including cabinet ministers like Eden was.

I believe she was thinking how bad it would look to the electorate that, in such a time where overseas holidays were far, far out of reach for them, their PM just buggers off to Jamaica for a few weeks - because they didn't know he was ill. Then when the govt keeps going it's Why do we need him anyway?? Just a thought.

Wow, how icey cold she could be, Soveriegn or no.Young or older. Needed sunshine or no. Did she not remember her father's horrid death? , which made her Queen to begin with? Elizabeth could be one iron lady it would seem. Perhaps he was very very ill . Although it's supposed to be an interpretation of facts, I wonder. There are other scenes where she is quite cut and dry with other very ill people of note. Stiff lip and all that. On with business. No tolerance for human weakness. Her duty always first, at the cost of others. How she dealt with her own sister, (And with her treatment of Diana?, no surprises here). Claire Foy is superb. Great actress!

But she never fought in the WW1 trenches and seems to have entirely forgotten that he won the MC, so to think of him as weak, cowardly was presumptuous, ridiculous and lacking in respect.

@@2charliep Her education was quite poor. WW2 aside, growing up to everyone kissing your arse and in golden palaces + the terrible education can stunt one's ability to sympathize with others in different situations. Plus she grows up in a system that says work till you die. What saved her and the monarchy was going back & using Queen Mary's style of reigning which meant going out and meeting & talking to people. That softened up her Victorian bs outlook over time.

@@umitencho She would’ve been fully aware of his military past, everyone was, and what ever she was doing at 18 yrs of age, unlike him she wasn’t fighting in the trenches. This isn’t not a documentary, it’s a drama based on a family, loosely based on facts using fiction to fill in the gaps. As for duty at all costs, Antony Eden was from the aristocracy and would probably have been at least as well drilled on “duty” as the Queen was. What I find annoying is the number of people jumping to conclusions about this with no knowledge whatsoever.

@@2charliep except that you are not entitled to an elected and appointmented position in government til death. You stay till you are voted out, you resign, or sacked. He left because his position was untenable. We want competent individuals who know when to back away, not old foogeys clinging to power because their distant ancestor was a brutal warlord.

Probably because you have not an ounce of knowledge on the field of medicine otherwise you'd know how serious that bottle of medicine was. No doctor prescribes that for something mild.

I’m pretty sure that a scene like this would never have taken place, because unlike you she will have known he spent 4 yrs fighting in the trenches of WW1, which had a life long impact on his health. She didn’t like him because of his views on the monarchy, but I hope she would at least have respected the sacrifices he made for this country. That’s the problem with series like this, people think they’re true.
