Because there IS nothing she can do. She may be the Queen, but God gave humans freewill. No ruler can take that away. Anne's problems are not something she can solve. Anne has to choose how to deal with all that comes her way. She has to choose who really deserves her attention: the British press OR the people whom she helps through her charity work. Mark OR Timony? Elizabeth can't make Anne happy. *Anne* makes Anne happy. That's what she has to come to figure out.

@@Madelope it’s not about the Family, it’s about the MONARCH. Family comes naturally since the crown follows the first-born rule. The purpose of the crown is to provide a symbol of stability and continuity. Its role is to oversee the government which is ,in fact, formed UNDER the sovereign’s name and makes sure that laws, rules etc follow the constitution. He/she MUST be impartial because being the most powerful person in country favoring or disliking you can be quite unfair, hence doing nothing is their job. They simply oversee the correct running of the country using ONLY the constitution as a “rule-book” regardless about their opinions on new laws etc but never showing an opinion since they MUST NEVER declare a position. Essentially the monarch is almost like a referee so just because he/she doesn’t like a player, they cannot simply kick him out but muse follow the rules of the game to ensure a correct match.

There's also the fact that she has nothing to do with the relationship with Anne and Mark. She has no control over it. People want her to solve things because of her title as the Queen and because she's a mother and wife, but...there's little to nothing she can actually do. She can't order the press to leave Anne alone, she can't order Mark to love Anne as she deserves, she *can't* do anything. And for human beings, that's the hardest truth to swallow

For sure. I think you’re right too that she did sincerely love Phillip, he was the partner she wanted and needed despite the things he sometimes said or did. I think that was also a difference for her kids, as like most people they had fallen out of love with their partners as their marriages failed. There really was nothing left to save 😢 and it truly was the best for them to go separate ways.

How is the situation different? The world changed? So what? How many great kings and queens saw the world change and still kept their duties and marriage?! The point here is not that it was unfair, but rather that a single family, specially one wreathed with pomp and circumstance, could never protect their own kids from the outside world, with it's impressionable vices and promises of personal freedom. It could only try to instill the same sense of duty, a sense that Elizabeth seemingly did not want to impose as tightly as other generations would have.

It didn't matter if kings and queens of the past were in unhappy situations. They were forced to stay together or risk ruin, and it was mostly queens who suffered from it. Even Princess Margaret experienced restrictions when she wanted to marry Peter Townsend, and that wasn't so long ago. Meanwhile, over sixty years later, when the culture and values of society changed, Charles was able to do what she could not by marrying Camilla, a divorced woman. Perceptions change with time. And I don't necessarily think that the "vices" you mention have much to do with changing times, as royalty has always had the temptations of adultery specifically. And no, there is no protecting any child from those things no matter how hard you try. My point is that the values and opinions of society were different for Elizabeth and her marriage to Philip than they were for her children. Just because she could accept them doesn't mean everyone else could. She had to learn she couldn't hold her children back from happiness for the sake of duty because they could have both if she had let them from the start. Her resistance and that of the Queen Mother frankly led to more heartache, catastrophe, and loss.

I disagree. Perhaps they should marry the right person the first time around instead of doing as they’re told. They have no issues cheating. They should have no issues having a backbone and marrying who they want.

The problem here is that there really is nothing the Queen can do. She can't control how the press responds to Anne. She can't fix her daughter's marital problems. She's warning her daughter that her lover might be reassigned, which is an active step. But these factors are all out of her control. I sometimes sensed that too many members of the Queen's family expected her to wave a magic wand and fix things that in the end were their own problems to solve.

It may have solved her problems with Phillip But neither Anne or Mark, or even Charles and Diana, are her and him.

We can only do what we can do. Seeing there are multi millionaires and billionaires buying super yachts and who don’t attend to the homeless at all I think the dislike is maybe a little displaced. There is a difference between inheriting privilege and being inherently selfish.

Diana was a public eye because her husband was a to-be king. Everyone just expected her to be the best and she was excellent in putting things the way everyone wanted. Later, the whole cheating thing, then she doing things which broke royal protocols and stereotypes, her behaviour with her sons is something which made an impact and her beauty was also one of the factors why everyone was drawn to her[this doesn't make Anne ugly though]. As for princess Anne, she was put kind of aside as she wasn't competing for the throne, that is why she remained under-appreciated I guess.

Princess Anne is finally popular, because it's finally considered cool to be a strong, sporty and hard working Princess, who doesn't care about fashion. It used to be that people wanted a sweet fairytale Princess wearing the latest fashion and smiling.

That's in almost every family, although some have it worse than others. The children suffer becuase of it but then they grow up to do the same to their children and then the cycle just continues.

No. The reality is that we will never know if they did or didn't take place. They still are mother and child so a conversation like this may have occurred. The simple truth is that these types of scenes are purely speculative. If we were to observed this exact conversation from afar, we'd have no idea what was said.

Anne has always gone against the grain and tried to be more, even as an old woman today she's still no nonsense and badass. So yeah, if I lived in that time I would favor her over Diana.

If there’s one thing the press wasn’t to Diana it’s cruel. The paparazzi was cruel. Anne was trapped by how people perceived her in the outside world and Diana was trapped by how people perceived her in the inside world. One is significantly less stable, sure, but it’s nowhere near secure and I don’t feel it’s difficult to relate.

For me it's more difficult to relate to Diana, and less to Anne. Diana was rich, noble, young, beatiful, loved and praised everywhere she went, if she wasn't so pretty in comparison to Camilla i think that the faction would be very different, she had a huge "pretty privilege". Anne was the forgettable one, it's not easy be invisible. The press was awful with everyone, in some case they create an image of perfection, who helps Diana a lot, but if we put all on a scale the bad parts are a lot heavier than the good

I think that's a crap thing to say about the late Diana, Princess of Wales. After her divorce especially she tried to forge her own way and make a difference. Her life was brutally cut short before she could make more of an impact. Anne is fantastic but I could not vehemently disagree with you more on Diana. Then again, it's easy to trash the dead when they can't defend themselves from haters.

Keep in mind this entire conversation is 100% fiction. Elizabeth was never praised for being a warm and loving mother, especially at this point of her reign, but that doesn't mean she was this cold to her own daughter. The Crown is a fictional drama based on real people, but each character is portrayed exactly as the writer wishes to portray them, not as they actually were at the time.

I used the word shallow to mean no emotional depth - giving Anne glib support when all she needed was to have someone listen and agree. Diana was too modern for them and didn't match up in industriousness. The Press didn't help by themselves focusing on what sold rather than to educate. If your characters are all dead it's easy to fictionalize conversations but these people were alive and could verify what was said but of course, didn't. What did Charles expect from a 19-year old, Aristotle? He didn't get what he wanted so he petulantly went back to his mistress. After his wife dies he makes the mistress Queen. Yet, from the start, Princess Anne of Edinburgh was the Duke of Edinburgh's favorite since she was the one most like him in personality while it took longer for him and her brothers to accept each other for who they were! I'm not sure Margaret doted on Anne as much as she'd doted on Charles.

You need to have lived in the 40's & 50's, to appreciate this was the norm. They had come through a war, seen devastation and death, but just sucked it in and got on with it. Life was precious and choices were few. My mother died a couple of years ago at the grand age of 94, and she had the same attitude to life's problems at 94 as she did as a young mother. It was always such a pleasant surprise to see her soften her approach to the grandchildren, but for her own children she was in a time warp. We knew she cared for us but it was never shown. Her mother had died when she was 6, and she and two slightly older siblings were passed round the family till the were old enough to go to boarding school, so to her, getting through the depression, and coming through the war, getting on with life was not a big issue. Many a time we would sit at the table with food on our plate and she would just have a small meal of potatoes, cabbage an gravy because what was left after she fed Dad and three of us, and in her way she was showing her love. Don't judge people from a generation you know very little about. She often said that we didn't know how poor we were when we were growing up, but while we didn't know anyone better off than us, we sure knew plenty worse off. Like most children of the 50's, I think we have a greater, appreciation of life than the current generations.
