Good review- I wish someone would do a underbelly comparison to this truck and other conventionals. Rear shock placement, rock guards on rear axle ubolts, welded rear axle construction, standard skidplates throughout.This truck (all tundras) are designed to be very effective off-road. Not to mention extremely beefy front end components for a half ton. Rack and pinion steering. These things take abuse and are very low maintenance. These are things that matter in a truck, not whether or not your getting 2 mpg better because your engine shuts down half its cylinders. We have a 2007 and a 2017 for work trucks and they both pass yearly safety with zero issues, do the work very well (Tow 10k regularly) and All we do is regular maintenance. These are awesome trucks, dont let the lack of fancy electronics fool you.

Trailer brakes. You should never tow without dedicated trailer brakes On anything over a few thousand lbs, in my opinion. The brakes on these trucks are greAt though, with large 4 piston brakes up front and big rotors. I think the rotors are about 14.5” on the trucks. I have my trucks registered for 8500 kgs, so legally I can tow/ carry about 5800 kgs. Assuming i dont overload axle weights/payload truck or/trailer. I also have a extra 800lbs of leaf spring in both my tundras (Very cost effective upgrade if you tow a lot)
@82dupont

Matt Hordyk ...Tow package in Tundra includes trailer brakes, if I’m not mistaken and yes, the leaf spring upgrade is a huge plus.

Trailer brake controller is in a tundra. The brakes themselves need to be on the trailer axles and wired to your 7 prong. Not every trailer comes with brakes

The Tundra Crewmax rear window is a selling point, vs the tiny sliding window on the Ford that they made such a big deal about. The Ford's window looks silly. Also, if you want to tow properly on any truck with over a 5000k pound load, you really need a weight distribution hitch. I'd also recommend airbags if you are concerned about squat appearance. I've had this setup on two different Tundra TRD Pro's and have towed a 7500 lb dry-weight travel trailer about 10,000 miles through out the USA. My whole rig is just around 15,000 pounds fully loaded on that CAT scale. Gas mileage is the only downside on the Tundra or any rig for that matter,

I for one actually think that rear window is a nice touch. The reason I like it over a sunroof is I am 6' 3" and i usually struggle with headroom in vehicles, pickup trucks included. So I can rarely order them with a sunroof as it takes 3/4" - 1" away from the headroom. This is a nice solution for me and feel it would lean me towards a Tundra (If they EVER refresh the darn thing LOL!)

I would still choose the f150 for all around truck as I will tow 7-8000 lbs a few times a year over mountains, and go down logging roads etc. the only thing I fan boy about is the rear window with the tundra... I would however buy the tundra if I didn’t have a carcane problem. I can’t keep anything 🤷🏼‍♂️ life is about the spice!

Glad I found this channel when I saw you moved on from TFL. I really enjoy the chemistry you and the old man have. I think the rear sliding window is cool. Don't have to worry about missing when I throw my empty cans out the back. /s. In all seriousness do you get the low pressure "womp womp" noise when just the rear window is open at highway speeds?
@chrisgleeton6823
@chrisgleeton6823 4 года назад
I have a Tundra, and I can confirm that there is NO buffeting when you have the rear window open. One of my favorite ways to drive in the summer is with sunroof and all windows (including back) open. Works well for city speeds, it's the next best thing to a convertible. On the highway, if you keep all the side windows closed, but open the sunroof and the rear window about halfway, air gets drawn in through the sunroof and out the back window, a great way to get airflow without being too noisy.

Cement or either of the blues. All 3 work for me. It is unfortunate that it gets worse gas mileage than the others but as you said it is super reliable and with how much cheaper it can be due to its age that discount can cover a fair amount of gas to cover the difference in the MPG.
@fortytons
@fortytons Год назад
I'll tolerate 17 mpg knowing my lifters won't give up the ghost (Mopar) or I won't be spending $3500 on replacing cam phasers (Ford). GM engines simply blow a hole in the side of the block these days. There is a lot to be said for reliability. I'm not heartbroken over a lack of little LED load lights in the bed. An inverter would be nice, though.

Voodoo Blue; no contest. Fair points regarding fuel economy. A diesel option would be phenomenal but hybrid would be an abomination. Go full electric or leave things alone. Hybrids turn into very heavy compromised vehicles and are only really at an advantage in stop/go traffic (ie. they make good taxis). I don't think I would buy the TRD Pro package. I would pick a package with an interior that suited my needs then sort the suspension via the aftermarket. The aftermarket would allow me to tailor the suspension to my payload/towing needs while keeping the higher GVM sticker on the other Tundra packages.
@soapbox187
@soapbox187 4 года назад
I can't see toyota bringing a diesel to their trucks in Canada or US. Two reasons I can think of; government regulations and they last forever. I'm curious as to why the hybrid would be a bad idea, though. Just picking your brain. Don't you think electric powered low end torque would be good for towing and normal city traffic? Save at least a little bit of gas. But yes tbat would easily add 1500-2000 lbs to the gvw of the pickup. I'm looking at getting a 2021 crew cab. Been eying it for about since the fall. Do you think its worth waiting for the redesigns?
@edwardpeters4700
@edwardpeters4700 4 года назад
@@soapbox187 Full electric would be excellent for low end grunt. The main issue is that battery technology hasn't caught up yet. My great hope currently sits with ultra capacitor technology (well worth a look if you're interested). The problem with hybrid technology is that it runs both electric and ICE systems making the overall weight of the vehicle much greater than it would be for either ICE or electric systems by themselves. As for diesel, I think it's the best bridge to when electric can take over. There's some hope as all the North American manufacturers have put out a 1/2 tonne diesel. Toyota has a 4.5l diesel V8 that could serve the Tundra beautifully.
@soapbox187
@soapbox187 4 года назад
@@edwardpeters4700 good point . Also toyota would most likely drop the v8 for a six cylinder in the hybrid. Same hybrid power train in the Lexus LS. Good for performance but NOT for a heavy truck. That beast would be 6-7k pounds! No way a v6 would pull that efficiently. Solid state and graphene seem to be the most effective. Ill have to look into ultra capacitors. I refuse to let the market dictate my decision. Im concerned consumers will blindly choose electric because its the morally right thing to do. I fear the future in 20 years.

Thanks for a great video, it is great to have an enthusiastic person doing what they love. I have a 2017 1794 and would love to put a PRO suspension in it. How did you find the PRO suspension did on road as far as highway joints and potholes? Do they get transferred to the cabin more than a regular Tundra? As far as the Vid, I totally agree with your POP about the fuel economy and the need for Toyota to get their next engine right, I think that will sway allot of people either way. A positive if they put out something that is modern and reliable, but if it is just a ordinary puffed up 3.5, I think allot of people will move to other trucks. You can only be loyal so long if the manufacturer does not care about catering to the competitive truck buyers. I think I can help you with the rear end locker assessment, In the Toyota The rear is a Limited Slip, it has to slip before the gears can work for the other side. I think this is better than the locker because, in 2wd you can use this more often and it is less intrusive than a locker at speed. Pleased do the same with either a Chevy with limited slip or an older TRD pro with a locker. Cheers-A

Check TFL's review, they do the slow and low approach and it works great going up and over "razor rocks". Honestly none of the reviews mean anything on new vehicles because they're new, they're under warranty, anything goes wrong it gets fixed free by the dealer...all I really care about is if something will still be moving on its own power in 10-20 years, so new car reviews are 100% useless for people like me who don't buy new stuff.

There is several million mile tundras out there but let's be honest, most normal people buying full size off road trucks aren't going to put a million miles on it. The fact of the matter is, with today's trucks most of them perform pretty close to each other when compared correctly so it then boils down to mpg and features which the tundra lacks. If toyota does not heavily improve the tundra by the time I buy a new vehicle I will be forced away from buying toyota.

I have a solid and straight 1977 W200 that is a beast of a work truck along with a rust free 1998 jeep Grand Cherokee I just bought for my daily driver. Followed you over from TFL. Enjoying your guys videos.

I'm just wondering why my 2020 2wd Tundra came with Nitto Ridge Grapplers and this TRD 4x4 came with street tires. It doesn't make sense to me.

Followed you over from TFL, great to see you still doing these offroad reviews! Nobody else sends these things quite like you! As far as the TRD color, it's a tough call. My favorites are voodoo, quicksand, and cement. I think they're really only special on the 4Runners though, because on the Tundra and the Tacoma, this year's TRD special color is next year's new color option across the line. On the 4Runner, it's a Pro color, and then it's gone. That said, I think my pick would be a quicksand 4Runner. I never even looked at or cared about 5th gen 4Runners, however the first time I saw a Quicksand 4Runner sitting on my local dealer's lot, I was like wow! yeah, I would totally drive that.

Great videos!! There is a switch to the left of the steering wheel for bed lighting. I have this truck and one other pro is it's turn radius is best in class which is great for off road and daily parking.

good video Steven I will take the Toyota build quality and reliability over a few mpgs and a 8,9,10 speed auto, the competition spends more time back at the dealership than Toyota and Toyota has proven it can do the off road part the same as the big 3 and the components are far more rugged and you test them better than most out there in the youtube world you can shit kick the Tundra 6 speed auto and still work you proved that with the 4 Runner winter video, dude that just rocked, no body has come close to that, my buddy has a 2018 Tundra TRD and has put 30,000km on it in the last 2 winters and we are in Manitoba so get what you do and lots more temperature extremes and lots of ice fishing and snowmobiling and it hasn't let us down yet and he does not baby his truck , he definitely keeps up the maintenance on it and it sounds great when you put your foot into it. 👍

All the TRD pro colors suck. I like white trucks. I went with a Limited DC and added TRD Pro shocks an exhaust. Saved a ton of cash. The rest is just cosmetics and like. My 2015 does everything the rest does with no big problems, just turned 100K, back up just started acting up but I’m sure it’s cause I dented the bumper trusting electronics vs real driving experience. Not doing that again.

Does it need to be updated? Absolutely. But Toyota doesn’t change things every 2 years like big 3. And they live in the repair shops. Toyota finds what works and they stay with it for a while. That’s how they just kill everybody else on reliability. They are not looking to keep up with the pack. Give me that RELIABILITY ANY DAY !!!

Truck bed anchor points need to be lowered. Its hard to secure small loads of lumber without the ability to apply down pressure with ratchet straps. Even adding an addition set lower like Honda Ridgeline would be more useful.

I have this exact truck. How could liking the rear sliding window even be a debate? It’s awesome and one of the best features of the tundra. Great for long fishing rods, lumber, ladders etc. it’s a great option to have and I love it. People compliment the rear window roll down all the time. Why wouldn’t you want it to slide all the way down.

gas mileage is not a discussion. None of the trucks with V8 get good mileage. You dont buy a full size truck for mileage. Nobody bases their choice of a full size truck on that.

I prefer the cement color. I have a 2016 trd pro in quicksand and I've never had a single problem with it. I added the firestone airbags to get rid of the squat. I like being able to roll the back window down. I roll all the windows down when I go trout fishing in the summer time. It's nice having all that air come through the cab down here in the southeast.

The only thing i'm really hoping for regarding changes to the next gen tundra, is at least an 8 speed transmission, a complete interior refresh (i'm looking at you, hideous dashboard!), and perhaps some better towing numbers. There is one thing that would be a deal breaker for me though, and that would be if they get rid of that sweet 5.7 V8. Rumors strongly suggest they will, which is a real shame because it's a strong and reliable engine. It just needs to be paired with a more modern transmission and perhaps some tuning. But looks like we'll have to wait and see!

Reasons for a drop down rear window: 1.Drop down window is a must in the 4Runner bc it allows you to carry lumber that is 12 to 16 feet long. 2. Rear drop down window on a Tundra great for when you live in climates that are normally north of 100 degrees. Get in the car 🔥 inferno immediately open all windows, blast AC, let heat escape while doing burn outs to create more turbulent airflow to prevent passing out from heat. This is my routine multiple times of day just to exist in Texas and Florida 3. Rear drop down window on Tundra perfect for camper hardtop shell’s so you have access to the inside of the truck without having to go outside. 4. Love the rear window in the 4Runner for when you have backed into parking space up against a wall, still allows access to the rear of the vehicle 🙏 ✊ 👍

Yeah payload is low as I assume she is made to be soft for gravel roads. The normal double cab model as 1320 or 1290 with the 8’ box. More likely that version would be the working mans truck. Also the window in back is useful for dog owners or people vacationing with the family on nice days.

And “costing me” is subjective. If you get an additional 50% life out of the transmission that offsets a lot of fuel from poor mpgs.

Let’s remember the 4.30 differential is made for towing. If any of your glorious big three have a towing option with similar gears it would get crappy gas mileage exactly like this tundra.

TRD Tundra should not be rated to tow 9000lbs. With that low GVRW you would be lucky to tow 5000lbs legally and if you had 4 people in the truck you can’t tow anything! I guess this is a off road truck only...
