I just HATE how they made the TOYOTA scrip just a bit bigger. It looks so wrong now. It was NEVER big on any Toyota before these. I really dislike Toyota for following along this stupid trend of making super tacky editions.

I had a 2011 Tundra with the 5.7L. Took great care of the truck and in 2019 with 88,000 miles it dropped a valve which destroyed the entire engine. Although a fluke, and expensive one at that, it shows these “simple” engines can and do still fail.

What is beautiful about that that thing is plastic chocolate built out of plastic chocolate or steel steel bumper? That's garbage 20 Turbo talk about AV. H kickass power, okay, your guys are just procrastinating, and you are the people who make a chop price. They shoot up sky high because you're going to go around. Making all these review and the s*** is not good. You understand how many people have to put engine inside.Those things already check the V8 out.Nobody has to change the engine at the earlviate.Engine inside your review is garbage

And the stupid thing is that they didn’t even do it for MPG’s they did it for emissions. Yes they could definitely make the 5.7 get better mileage, maybe an 8 speed tranny or even different gears, IMO. But I still love my 21 and wouldn’t trade it for a 3rd gen.

My favorite tundra video by far! I’m in the market for a TRD Pro and I’m leaning towards the 2021, can’t go wrong with the simplicity and huge cab and the amazing durable and reliable V8. Both trucks are beautiful though, love me a Toyota!

Very good review guys. One thing I'd like to point out is that while other commentors spoke of the V8's reliability, I don't think anyone mentioned longevity. The V8 regularly goes over 300K miles. Many people buy Toyota with the intention of keeping it a long time. I'm currently driving a 2008 Tundra 5.7L with 160,000 miles. I'd like to know what the lifespan is on the hybrid batteries and what it would cost to replace them. Overall great review on both trucks.

Very good point! The V8 has proven itself to reach 300k miles or more consistently. This being a new powertrain, that has yet to be seen. My confidence in Toyota there and the closest resemblance in its potential would be the Prius (which I own). Prius are known to hit 300k miles easily as well and even some million mile Prius out there also. Batteries can be replaced but the motor's Toyota engineers develop are designed to remain consistent with their brand and reputation. I can't say the same for the Supra and its BMW motor though lol

The old one actually looks really good. More muscular. Plus it’s a V8. What’s troubling is that the new 2022 was taken of the list of reliability consumer magazine.

The previous generation is definitely a great looking truck! For the 2022 reliability, every vehicle will have their issues initially. Even the previous generation tundra had its issues early on. Time will tell to see how reliable or unreliable the new generation is. I have no intent of getting rid of my truck so I can be the test subject lol

What I like about the naturally aspirated V8 is its proven reliability. I don't see the V6 twin turbo matching the V8 when it comes to reliability. But hey only time will tell, it's a Toyota after all.

I am actually surprised how visually you can tell the new truck is smaller. As a former Ecoboost owner who had the turbos go out on me in the middle of Oklahoma with a trailer I had to abandon so I could limp mode it 2 1/2 hours at 30 mph to the nearest Ford dealership and spend $6,000 to fix…naturally aspirerated motors only for me.

The truck is definitely smaller. Actually didn’t pay much attention to it on the video till you pointed it out. In person, the difference wasn’t as significant as it appears on the video lol. I too previously owned an EcoBoost so I can relate 🤣

Wow that's like the worst moment for it to happen, but it makes sense as towing is a high load scenario that would stress the engine. Now that the new Mustang and Super Duty are out we can at least say that the new 6.8L V8 will very likely never be used in anything else than the HD trucks. A shame because that motor is brilliant but it will get worse fuel economy than the 5.0 so that's the reason. It has better outputs though with 405 hp (vs 400) and 445 lb-ft (vs 410) of torque. Ford chose that design for maximum realistic reliability while still delivering fuel economy (to make it even more reliable you'd have to remove EFI and make it fully mechanical with that simple PFI OHV engine, which kills fuel economy and outputs). F-250 is a big step up from F-150 so this is gonna be dicey.

@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 If I was to buy a F-250 I would only get the 7.3L V8. The diesel is over kill and extremely pricey to buy and to maintain. The 6.8L V8 to me is a waste. What's the point when it is many ways almost as good as the 7.3 but isn't as good. Either way the 7.3L V8 Godzilla is an incredible motor so far.

@@TristanGrimaldo Ford does a terrible job letting you know what is required to own a twin turbo motor. I hope Toyota is doing a better job. First, they don't tell you that you have to do a TDI service every 30-40k (turbo direct injection) to clean out the built up carbon. If you don't do that it can kill your motor over time. Second, you have to change out the barrings every 80,000 miles and they are not cheap. It was around $600 on that F-150 I owned. Third, if you do a lot of towing your turbos will wear out prematurely. I got to 153,000'ish miles when they blew and that was it. All said and done I don't think I got any better gas, and infact I got worse mpg towing. Averaged around 7.5-9.5 mpg. Just awful.

I’m still looking at getting the 2021 TRD PRO used over the new model! The Cabin space & overall body style is my main stays. If I could get mpg of the hybrid & infotainment of the current gen paired with previous gen it would be perfect!!

@@TristanGrimaldo I have a 2020 Trd pro same color as Edgar, I love the interior space but me being a single dad with a seven-year-old, I don’t need much huge space in the back of a crew max anyway.When my lease is up I am going to go look for the 2022-2023 Trd pro as my upgrade you can’t beat the mileage compared to the V-8. The way I see it got to move with the times.How close was the 0 to 60 sprint with the tow haul mode on compared to your truck? You said it felt similar on the video but how much similar? I havn’t drove a 2022 yet. I never cared about top speed but what counts for me is from a dead stop 0-60 zip. I wish the 2022 had the same hight as the 2020 if not maybe a little higher but other than that,that’s a perfect truck for me.👍🏼💪🏼Albert from the Los Angeles area

@@Albert-777 Hey Albert! I’m a regular in LA and Cali. Have family there and in the Bay Area. To answer your question, when Edgar had me press the tow haul mode button, the throttle felt more sensitive and responsive. It also seemed to hold the gear longer. But you also saw Edgar’s reaction to driving my TRD Pro. Crazy thing is it wasn’t even in sport mode which I guess would be equivalent to that tow haul mode button. I tried a 0-60 run with an app and if I remember correctly it put up 6.3 seconds? Overall, you will love the I-Force Max. I have not met someone who has said anything about the driving experience of the I-Force Max. Toyota honestly did a great job using the electric motor to fill in the dips in the power and torque curve. Puts a smile on my face every time. The 2022 Tundra’s technology & features surpasses the previous generation. But that’s what also makes the previous generation amazing. It’s simplicity 🙂. All these "but the turbos will fail" people.... I bet nobody bats an eye about a turbo diesel in terms of reliability (minus the emissions shit). Towing with turbo motors on pump gas is more of a deterrent for me than the reliability of the turbos themselves

Bro, for many of us Tundra fans, the V6 on 2023 and later, sucks. I don't care about their numbers with twin turbochargers, but diwn the road, those turbochargers are going to cost $$$ when they go out. Plus, lets not forget the stress they put on the engine. Longevity was the Tundras strong suit, but not with a V6 with turbochargers. Those days are gone for Toyota, unless they bring back the V8

Completely understand. But remember, Toyota has been running this powertrain for some time now in Japan. Only time will how reliable this power trains are, but I’m confident that it’s Toyota who engineered it.

Why did Toyota make the 3rd Gen smaller? Its big enough for me being 5'4 I sat in one on a Dealer lot. Put a Supercharger on that 2nd Gen would be crazy

Give me that naturally aspirated 5.7L V8 any day. Big balls, reliable, sounds mean and is the last of its kind since everyone is going smaller engine with turbos. New gen is smaller truck with a v6, just call it a tacoma instead

Previous gen owner here, I was telling everyone that the crew cab is much smaller on the new Tundra, now they know for real! Also love the fact that the rear seats can recline before they took that option away. Anyways, the new look is cool looking compared. Good vid guys! 👍👍

Thank you! You’ll love your Tundra. Edgar was all smiles and open minded to owning one says a lot. And I 100% agree with you there. Toyota never settles and strives for continuous improvement. As a purist, I wish Toyota would have brought back an updated version of the 2JZ or have their engineers develop their own motor in house.

The old tundra but one things that bothers me to the core and I can’t get I over is that the back doors are way way!!! to big (long) old engine is unmatched and will out last the new (i think) but I’m getting the new one just because of the old tundra door a just way to big In my opinion and I just can’t get over it… I tried and tried!!! but I can’t get over it

So I have a 2006 Lancer Evolution 9 (RU-vid it if you don't know the car) and it is a beast that makes power. I also had an 2002 S2000 with maybe 200whp. I enjoyed driving the S2000 more because it was more of a purest car than the Evolution 9 which focused on blowing through the 1/4 mile as fast as possible. I find these two trucks in a similar predicament where the 2nd gen is more of a Truck like vehicle while the newer gen is more of an up to date/modern car.

I love the 2022 engine but don’t like the front design and I love the design of 2020 but don’t like the engine on it

Finally a real comparison review! I knew and have always told everyone its smaller. I like the way the 22 looks but toyota dropped the ball trying to make it look prettier than functional. 21 for the WIN!

Honestly after driving Edgar’s truck, personally I wouldn’t mind owning a V8 too lol.

@@TristanGrimaldo still love the 22 wish it couldve been bigger. I Dont even mind the V6 TT honestly. But as a family of 6 i needed that Crewmax 6 seater 4x4 (Rare) so i had to drop 40k cash on a good deal lol. 2015 SuperWhite SR5 with Trd Off Road package. ive already made the seats Red, blacked out all emblems. 5% tint lumar all around, lots of lighting, i left my 32 inch lightbar switch same place as the 22 lol. Im about to install a DB Customz grill in the future. Next up im waiting on my 3 inch lift with Falken MT’s 35x12.5x17 on rock warrior wheels 😅. Since i couldnt buy a pro with 6 seats had to make tbe Sr5 look like a Pro.

@@18HunnidBK your truck sounds awesome! My F150 was a 6 seater and my front bench seat actually came in handy haha. But honestly either way you go, the new Tundra in my opinion is a great truck. Yes it’s not perfect but Toyota is proactive and very involved. If I didn’t have the TRD pro, I would have heavily modified my Tundra (volks, overland gear, etc.) lol.

I chose to stay with the 2nd Gen Tundra due to a long history of reliability. The New tundra doesn’t have enough history yet to know if it’s reliable. He definitely didn’t have that 2nd Gen gas pedal pinned to the floor though. They’re no where near that sluggish.

Definitely a tested and proven truck. It had its rough patches along the way as well but Toyota eventually perfected it. It’s Toyota at the end of the day. Their entire reputation is based on reliability which is why I’m not worried. Yes it’s new, but the power train has been utilized in Japan for awhile now. I’m sure with time this new gen will prove to be just as reliable

I have a super white 2021 TRD pro, I love the V8 and I get around 14-15mpg. I do wish I have parking sensors and blindside sensors. My 2018 Tacoma TRD off-road with the technology package have everything. An yes I had the longer bed. Wish my tundra TRD pro have the option of a longer bed .

As far as longevity with the newer Gen truck it’s not if the turbos go out it’s when. I don’t care who makes it, at some point it’s going to be an expensive fix. But I did sit in the new Gen truck at the dealer when I bought my 21 Tundra Voodoo in Bourne TX. It was the highest trim level called Capstone. Man I’ll tell you it’s the most amazing interior I’ve ever sat inside. Hopefully Toyota brings back a smaller V8. My 2021 Tundra will be on the road for years.

The powertrain has been used in Japan for quite sometime even before releasing it to us in the states. I agree with your concerns but only time will tell. I expected the same from my F150 ecoboost but that thing was around 150k miles maybe before I sold it and never had issues with the turbo 🙂.

I just went to the dealer like 2 weeks ago to buy a new tundra 2022 and to be honest i decide to get a 2021 tundra lunar rock instead of a 2022 cause the 2022 feels more fake on other words to much plastic.and now i lift 4 inches and put new tires and rims and omg looks amazing

Agree, 2022 tundra way smaller inside. the only pros is the MPG, steering and suspension, super smooth. 20 mpg on highway.

The old V8 is tried and true engine. Its in the Land Cruiser and tundra. The price of the 21 will increase next couple of years because it will.

You’re proud that you beat a naturally aspirated V-8 5.7 with your twin turbo v6 but go find yourself a 5.7 with Magnuson on it and you’ll be singing a different tune lol. 😢 but great video I enjoyed watching it.

Oh I’m sure my truck won’t stand a chance. I was able to make my f150 ecoboost quick, but find no interest or purpose in modifying my Tundra for speed 😂

Good job on getting an old vs new video. Are you on tundra crew on Facebook groups? I was on there from the beginning, like 2015 and got deleted when I had to trade my tundra in for divorce reasons.. sad.. they did that when I helped create that community, but came back in 2022 to buy my tundra.. hoping to get back in that group..

@@Kapes56 No problem! These are well made and are very durable. Significant upgrade from my other running boards. This one is all aluminum. Honestly the best of both worlds. Durability of the rock/slide rails but the ability to utilize as a step. I don’t plan on doing anything too crazy either and these will definitely service it’s purpose

Thanks for the video. I test drove a new 24' limited with the TRD package and really liked it. I'm going to test drive at 21' TRD Pro tomorrow that's for sale at a great price. We'll see.

The v8 engine is proven to be a reliable engine; the twin turbo v6 won’t be known until at least 5 year minimum. One will hurt your pocket book daily on gas and the other one will probably let you know when maintenance time comes up.

Definitely valid points. That v8 is tested and proven. I believe Toyota has been running the motor (I-Force Max) for several years already in Japan. Only time will tell but your points are accurate 🙂

You can tell just by looking at them. The previous gen looks larger, and stronger. The new version looks "frail" especially in the rear end. Toyota was trying to keep up with the big three here in the US with technology. But most of us Tundra owners appreciate the bullet proof 2nd gen version. Not to mention the astronomical prices of the 3rd gen. People, wake up.

I believe they removed that handle in the 2020 Tundra. It’s a very useful feature that helps you get in and out of your truck easier

New gen with engine malfunctions. Transmission problem at 5k miles. Trim don’t lineup. Window leak. Electrical systems refusing to charge. It’s all trash. The older trucks are great other than gas mileage and the new gen gas mileage sucks also and they don’t get anywhere close to the advertised 19mpg.

This is what every gen 3 naysayer needs to do, actually test drive the truck. I cant speak for the the non hybrid, but my 22 TRD PRO smokes my 16 and 17 TRD PRO. They do have the V8 sound/rumble, I can not deny on the outside the V8 does sound better. That and the better turning radius on the older gen, everything else on the 22 I like better. Good on you for letting somone test drive it, I think he was open minded and honest too. My neibours relatives were over their house on Thanksgiving he had a 22 limited with TRD package non hybrid. I tired to get him to test it but he said no I'm good its the same truck. I was like not really man, but he just wouldnt take the offer. Im sure there is a pretty significant difference hybrid vs non hybrid that he would have noticed, and the suspension.

Sure but nobody was comparing a modified truck vs a stock truck here. Keep your gen2 or buy one if you don’t own one but love it. I’ve had 4 already, I wanted a new Tundra and I’m happy with it. 17 is still in the driveway, it’s going up for sale and will sell easily. It’ was and still is a great truck

I agree with you Johnny. At least test drive it or experience it first. This video captures that perfectly in my opinion. This video was truly as honest and non-bias as it can get. I told Edgar before we shot this video was that I want him to be 100% honest and so will I. I’m sure everyone would appreciate it. Both trucks are great in their own way and at the end of the day, they’re both Toyota 💪🏼

@@TristanGrimaldo Yes I appreciate an honest review! Just tired of hearing so much bad feedback from gen2 owners that haven't even sat in a 22, let alone test drive one. And to be clear when I said "smokes" my 2017 or any of the 4 gen2's I've owned. I don't only mean power and drivetrain. I'ts more then that, personally after having the 22 for 2 months now, going back to my 17 the seats felt really flat, hard, and uncomfortable. Power was less, but my 17 also has 125K KM on it. And just overall the electronics can't compare, the 14" screen, the 360 camera system, how it turns into EV only while parking, moon roof, etc etc. Its just got so much new tech in it, that Im loving. Granted a 21 probably has a little more then my 17, but not enough for me to want a 5th Gen2 21 over a new Gen3 22. And I understand we can't really compare reliabailty yet, but my gen 2's weren't all perfect either. My first Tundra in 2008 had some engine sernsors go bad at very low milage, had to wait 2 months for backorderd parts but had it fixed under warrenty. And my 2012 again from almost new siezd the steering rack up, again coverered under warrenty. So we will see I only have 2600 KM on my 2022 currently, but I have faith in Toyota that they will take care of any potential problems.

It’s too early to tell exactly how reliable it is, but many seem to forget that Toyota built their brand and company on quality and reliability. No vehicle is perfect but they are historically very involved and pro active in quality control. I appreciate Toyota’s efforts to address issues. I personally have never seen this with other brands. Especially Ford 🤣

Toyota should've made a 100% Electric Tundra now that would be sick (maybe in 2030). I am a 2015 v8 crewmax owner, I love my simple v8 n/a and how big the older model is. I will always have the option to turbo it or supercharge it myself. V6 turbo is ok but they should've made a electric tundra to compete with the cyber truck and pushed it to the next level. All tundras are great however!! Thanks for sharing this!!

I told him I wasn’t Vietnamese and that I was Filipino. He legitimately looked disappointed 🤣. Lets be real they’re not really even comparable trucks. They’re so different. The reason people are “hating” on the 22 is cuz of the price. It’s hard to justify 30% more $$$$ when you get 3mpg more and a 5” bigger screen. I love the new truck. Just not enough to double my car payment and trade in my 20 trd.

You make a valid point. I too agree that maybe a lot of the hate may stem from the 2022 Tundra’s price. My situation was different as the last truck I had was an F150. With the previous gen Tundra being such a great truck, I can see why it would be difficult to justify the transition to the new gen. The price for trucks in general have increased tremendously. But yes, both trucks are truck special in their own way and I’ve said it before, the V8 Tundra will increase in price dramatically I am sure. Just a great investment overall.

@@MrAllan875 My only experience with superchargers are with the S2000 world. Arguably more reliable and easy to maintain. Turbo set ups seem to have more issues. When I get to my s2000 build Im definitely going with a supercharger. A supercharged v8 tundra would be a beast of a truck. Probably sounds awesome too
