Quick comparison of Mud tyres vs All terrain tyres. Something I would of been curious about prior to committing myself to my tyres. Hope you all enjoyed it and found it useful.
Why would you be running 30psi on sand?!! Drop to at least 20-24 psi depending on how heavy you are. You're essentially running road pressures. ATs are better on sand. MTs are better on rocks and mud. Both are great on loose gravel. After watching this vid and the one where you guys drowned your car I'm thinking you guys would benefit greatly from a 4wd training course. At least then you'll have the basics and won't be making rookie mistakes.
Doofus Rufus 15 or 10 if necessary. You wouldn't want to turn sharply especially at high speed because you'll have a great chance of getting the tyre off the rim.
Bryce Pongratz If they live nearby and go to that place frequently then it's understandable. I go to the beach nearly everyday and drive with 35psi because I'm too lazy to deflate, drive for 20 minutes and then inflate again. Even if I get stuck (rarely happens because I know the area) I only reduce the psi of the rear tires to 28-24 which is enough for that place.
Bryce Pongratz exactly. However, my ram 2500 has never been stuck and I'm on the beach every week driving down the coast of Texas. My PSI is 80 rear and 65 front. I've never aired down and I'm rarely in 4wd unless I'm on the soft side of course. Even then, when it starts to bog I stop 4L and let it crawl it's way out. This is all with amp research 35x12.50R20 MTs. Width helps a bit too.
As someone who spends most of my time when on Stockton beach pulling cars out when stuck. I would definitely recommend running your tyres around 18-10psi depending on what side of the beach you are on. If your heading south on the beach you will most definitely get stuck and it’s a big rookie mistake. ATs or MTs are both ok in this situation but I do recommend going at low speeds try staying under 40km you will have better control over your vehicle and it’s the legal speed limit on Stockton. My old land rover had BF Goodrich K02 AT 33x12.5xR15 and I never had any problems and only got stuck once because I didn’t let the air down when entering the beach on the far south side. My Landcrusier 80 has BF Goodrich MTs 33x12.5xR15 and it’s the same great to drive but it does used a bit more fuel then it did when I had old ATs on it. The point to this comment is it doesn’t matter what you run with tyres, what’s important is that you understand what the environment you’re driving in needs. Safe driving and have fun.
Nice vid. Lower pressures are needed where there is less weight as it will bag out more consistently. I.e for a dual cab with little weight in back you would run 14 at front and 12 in back...allowing tyres to deliver same amount of surface contact. Good luck and love your honesty in the vids- #captainobvious LOL
Black = all terrain grey = Mud tires so If you pause the video at 4:00 you can see that the black on has the AT and at 3:17 ish you can see that the grey one has the MT
