@@dcan911 The “struggle” refers to social issues which only become political when some self-serving so-called “leader” or politician makes it that way. Thank goodness the legendary Muddy Waters didn’t fall into the trap of outwardly taking a “political” side. Social issues affect us all. Politics always divides. That’s why this country is in the sick state it’s in now. Even healthcare is political! Again, thank goodness Muddy Waters was not!

@@assortedlunatics4381 Muddy grew up in rural country poverty, at a time when 70 percent of the population of this nation lived in similar conditions on farms. People are really historically ignorant. It wasn't until after WWII that these regions actually had electricity and some indoor plumbing. But rural living was never like urban slum living. There was always food and you could hunt and fish. People didn't have much, but you would be surprised that doesn't mean you felt poor. Life is about a lot more than just material things.

They and Clapton and the Who were regulars going to Muddy's club in Chicago to learn about the music they listened to on old records. As a result of them bringing the blues back to the forefront of popular music after it was abandoned by Black audiences, Muddy and all the old timers also made a lot of money getting good gigs and tours all over the world. There were lots of blues bands formed in England about that time and all very successful.

It’s no shame. Muddy was grateful that the stones played his stuff.

Muddy Waters loved the Rolling Stones. You really don't know anything about the music. Black people abandoned the blues for R&B and Motown. They weren't selling any records at all and not on the radio. The only place they could work is in a few clubs, and Muddy's was the most important one. Young English musicians like Clapton and the Stones went to that club to learn the music they had heard on old records. The black musicians didn't know who they were, they thought they might be cops. The British bands brought the music into the forefront again, and they brought Howlin' Wolf, Muddy and others to England to play. There actually is video on youtube of Mick Jagger getting out of the audience at Muddy's club and singing with Muddy in Chicago. They recorded a record there at the Chess Records recording studio. They brought the Blues back. As a result, Muddy and others started getting really good paying gigs and tours. Muddy loved the Rolling Stones.

He wasn't just talking about poverty, he was talking about "problems" -- a lot more than money; love, women, death. In the prewar era we forget that people did not usually see a doctor until they were dying. There was no welfare, in most rural areas no electricity or indoor plumbing. Most blues is not about money, it's about life's problems; and also a lot about God. They all played a lot of spiritual music. You would be hard pressed to find a black traditional song that was about being poor because even in my childhood everybody was basically poor by today's standards. But we didn't think of ourselves as poor. That music came about because people filled themselves up inside with more than material avarice.

And he was always very complimentary about those white guitarists playing abilities. He just wasn't sure they had his voice but who does. John Lee Hooker loved Bonnie Rait and the Canned Heat.
